Title: Top Box
Post by: mikeyw64 on February 21, 2017, 05:35:44 PM
My GTR came with an OEM 39l top box fitted which was handy . Big enough to take my rucksack with laptop in etc but could only take one helmet (ok I know you can fit a helmet in each pannier but.....)

On my Bird I had a Givi Maxia which comfortably took two helmets so the next decision was whether to get one of those and also replace the mounting plate (the Maxia is Monokey, the OEM is Monolock) . After humming and haing I settled on the Blade B47N Tech (http://www.givi.co.uk/cases/Monolock/B47%20BLADE%20TECH) plus the optional cover (http://www.givi.co.uk/cases/Monolock/B47--BLADE?o=C47). The latter was ordered in silver which is close but not quote so a friend sprayed it up for me to match.

Piccys speak for themselves. Still to do fit some 10mm red LEDs to the Blade to use as supplementary brake lights (could have taken the easy option and ordered the kit but had some LEDs lying around from a previous project)

the blade just looks soooo much better, plus it offers more storage space

8 whole extra litres :)

I was debating whether to go with the V56 Maxia (http://www.givi.co.uk/cases/Monokey/V56NT%20MAXIA%204) but that would have meant changing the base plate (admittedly not difficult)  and I don't think it's quite  as stylish looking(pus a load more expensive).

Only decision no is whether to sell on the 39 litre (I have a spare monolock plate to go with it) or keep it just in case I fancy fitting the slightly smaller one.

Blade is better looking.
It's a shame Givi don't do an all over gloss paint.
The rough texture prevents colour matching the whole box.
Is there another manufacturer that produces anything of similar quality?

Shad is a name I've heard good things about but have no experience.

http://www.shad.co.uk/shad/
Not sure I would actually like it all over colour coded, that said I did have the complete lid of my Maxia colour coded (yes I know there's a piece of trim missing) :)

Have just realised watching this video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-vWy8D4K5pA)  (I was checking how long the Blade has been around) that this case actually fits on Monolock and Monokey bases

I'm using a Shad now with a color colour matched lid.  It's starting to feel it's age somewhat as the lock is getting finicky and the lid is harder to shut.  But then again it's been on the bike nearly 10 years.

That is a great picture Mikey. Have you worn off your blobs?

We can get the colour matched tops but not the whole box.
That is a shame I think.

My very recent research on the link that Mikey put up suggests that Shad are more expensive than the Givi.

Ok so I was browsing around and I have to say the latest top box offering (http://www.kawasaki.co.uk/en/accessories/luggage/1400gtr/2016/topcase_system_47l_?UidCat=0B1BCg1QWl1bXVxcXA4NXAlYWgoLWA5eDlAMWAkLUFENCQtGDQZFPSM&UidSubCat=0546WlhZXFhaWllYWFlYWVhcW1pZRg0GRT0j&CodeModel=0166Mi9ZXFhY&Uid_Model=0828Dl1cXlhRWFpeXF1cXFFeWAoJC1tQXwoNWAtfCVlZDlg&Uid=07FDUF1cWV0JWAsMXl9ZXAxfWFFdXV4JWVhQCwwNXllcW1w) from the Kawasaki mothership (which looks to be another rebadged Givi) is actually not bad looking nor too stupidly priced. I also like you an have the lok matched to your ignition key

Mike it VERY good .
That came with the full touring package on my 16 plate .
Very positive locking mechanism . Metal mounting plate .
Dual skinned construction .
Easy to modify if you want to put L.E.D lights in and a  charging socket for laptops or whatever . If it's any help I use for a power lead a autocom straight extension lead .
Cut it in half strip wires back and you have a damn good waterproof connection should you want to remove the box.
My Mrs loves the backrest that came with it . Declaring it was one of the most comfortable boxes we have ever had .
And Yes the box us made by GIVI so it's a good quality .
Hope this helps

kawasaki branded luggage is Kappa product, which I believe is a division of Givi, hence the similarity

That looks as though it is the same case as fitted to the Versys with the GT package. If so, it really is well made and looks good too. The top box on my Versys GT is a far better product than the item fitted as standard on my 2012 GTR Tourer which, whilst it looked OK was so flimsy that only the lid held it in shape when it was full!

Are you referring to the Blade or the Kawasaki branded one?

If I understand Colin correctly he is referring to the case fitted to his latest generation 2 Versys 1000 GT, and how much better it is than the one fitted to his Generation 1 Versys 1000,

The latest case which he mentions is this ...which does bear a resemblance to the Givi Blade

Nah that looks more like a Givi V47 (http://www.givi.co.uk/cases/Monokey/V47)

and somewhat surprisingly Kawasaki aren't charging a premium over a vanilla V47 (in fact its cheaper than the V47nt with smoked reflectors)

Apologies for the confusion that I seem to have created. The top case on my Versys 1000 is the Kawasaki branded type as shown and, I told by the dealer that it is a Givi product. The earlier one that I referred to was the standard fit on my 1400 GTR Grand Tourer and this was far less good.

It is my opinion having looked at Kappas, that they are a cheaper version of Givi, produced by Givi.
I like the look of Wook's.
What's the rrp from Kawasaki and is there a way of getting it any cheaper? Perhaps via a cash back site etc?

Looks like the Kawasaki branded Givi is the way to go.
The Givi equivalent is £215 from J&S
Kawasaki want £147
And the plate carrier is very good value too at £79.

I've just received my new top box.
The Givi E55NT.
It's being discontinued so if you want one get in quick.
Cheapest place is Motocard at £175 incl delivery from Spain.
I'll post a pic when it's fitted and the sun is shining but until then here's the stock photo:
