Title: Switchback LEDs Take 2
Post by: mikeyw64 on February 14, 2017, 08:51:05 PM
Ok so following on from my original thread  (http://www.gtr1400.co.uk/forums/index.php?topic=6198.0)I've been perusing the bay of fleas and may have come up with an even easier solution.

Take qty 2 of each of the below

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2X-1157-2057-2357-Socket-Adapter-Harness-Wiring-For-Turn-Signal-Light-Bulb-/232042260664?hash=item3606cbe8b8:g:cHsAAOSw6n5XqH~~

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1pc-Amber-White-Dual-Color-Switchback-60-LED-Front-Turn-Signal-Light-Bulb-F7-/322332394267?hash=item4b0c82031b:g:LOgAAOSwPCVX5Itr

1> Remove the inner panels as previously described to gain access
2> Remove the small sub loom which has the OEM Socket on
3> Replace with the new one splicing into the original 2 pin  connector  unless someone has a source for those in which case make up a complete new loom
4> Run Wire to City Light
6> Reinstall
7> Replace Panels
6> Enjoy

NB I haven't done this but that socket looks like it should fit straight out of the box , even if it doesn't it would be easier to adapt than the rubber bung in my working install

EDIT:

Sorry will also need a couple of 50w 6ohm load resistors  (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2x-50W-6-ohm-load-resistor-for-Car-Indicator-LED-lamp-S8-/112265346160?hash=item1a23893c70:g:rzwAAOSwEzxYdgGf)or a different turn signal relay  (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Flasher-Relay-Yamaha-R1-R6-Kawasaki-use-with-LED-indicators/271997235928?rt=nc&_soffid=5024486008&_soffType=OrderSubTotalOffer&_trksid=p5731.m3795)to prevent hyperflashing

Let us know how you get on with the mods Mikey.
It is very much of interest.
Great safety improvements at little cost with no change to the bike's appearance.
What does the turn signal relay do?
Does it take the place of the resistor?
What actually is hyperflash?

I have no plans to change my original working setup this is an alternative that I've come up with since

Hyperflash occurs when the load is too low and the bulb flashes rapidly

There are 2 methods to prevent this
1) a load resistor
2) an electronic flasher

technically option 2 is the neater/more elegant method as it will work with both LED & Incandescent

I've followed suit with regards to your first posting - Take 1, and ordered it from eBay. It's not been delivered yet.
But I might put the unit into my car instead and go for Take 2 on the bike.
Have you included a switch into the wiring? You mentioned you were thinking of doing so.

So the indicators work at normal speed (ie you have load resistors/electronic flasher unit fitted) but just flash "amber white amber white " rather than "amber off amber off"

The most obvious answer is that the units they have sent aren't as advertised by them :(

From the ebay page:

How it Works (check the gif animation):
White light on when Parking / DRL on
"Amber-Off-Amer-Off" when Turn Signal on
White light on when Parking / DRL back on
NOTE: There is one second delay between process NO.2 and NO.3. It's how this LED bulb originally works, NOT a quality issue! Please DO check the animation and make sure it meets your expectation before buying.

Thanks for quick reply,
The whites are on constantly unles I switch them of , when indicator is turned on,  the orange part of the bulb flashes but white stays solid . I didn't get the kit one I got the individual pieces , could it be the bulbs?

As I said this was an alternative suggestion , the listing states they do amber-off, if they're going amber-white then it does sound like theyve sent the wrong bulbs

Got me worried now! :undecided:
Just received a set, took a few weeks to get here, yet to test or install so I'll update when I test tomorrow afternoon

Daryl
Any chance of you running through what you've done, in a 'how to do it' type of thing.
Cheers

Got the parts from eBay 2 x bulb holders 2 x bulbs and 2 x resistors .
Release lower fairing reach in remove bulb holder (twists out) . Cut 2 pin connection of bared back wires and soldered + & -  to the red and black on new bulb holder . Also to these two crimp in resistor to +& - . You also have a blue wire this I took a feed from sidelight and connected to it this is Drl . In between this I have ran to switch on dash to turn them off .  Hopefully getting new bulbs at weekend as my white light isn't going out when I hit the indicators. Apart from that they look cool.

Are the bulb holders an exact fit to the bike?
Unlike Mikey's first Take 1 when he had to wrap some tape around it.

there are some subtle social diversities between the two environments

EDIT, please ignore , wrong thread

Ah! I went with option 1, those with resistor and rubber plug!
Original lamp holder was 26mm, so built up new lamp with insulation tape till 26mm, then ridge in rubber still there after taped up, holds a treat!

Below is pic of the original lamp holder, tabs are different to ebay listed part but reckon it should be able to be modded to match!

Bulb holder looks like one in picture but with 4 tabs , cut 2 of that aren't the fit and away you go

Morning peeps! So I finally got all the bits n bibs via fleabay to do this. When I connect the LEDs off the bike (on the bench in a mock set up), both yellow and white segments light up. I presume that the flasher relay is what causes the white segment to know to switch off ?   I want to know it all works before getting all drastic with the plastics!!

Cheers as ever

Hi bigbad, can you simulate it by keeping the pos feed on the white lights and make and break the feed to the Amber leds?

Helloooo!
In short...no.
With or without the bulb holder, power to white terminal only = white lights, yellow terminal only = yellow lights and both terminals = both yellow and white lights :-(

Booooooo - have I fubar'd somewhere ?

I have feedback from the seller...

"Dear friend,

We know it may not meet your expectations. But we have low profit in eBay, Because we also suffer loss, we paid the shipping fee and the eBay final value fee.
You can keep it and do not need to return.

We suggest to refund half to you and you keep the item to save your time and money and you do not leave us any negative or neutral feedback, is it ok?"

Is it me or is that bang out of order? Has anybody else found this when receiving the wrong bulbs?  Does anybody know where else sells them (lessons learnt at a cost of a tube of smarties I guess!!)
Cheers

Ok I admit defeat. 3rd set of bulbs (last ones cost £30 the pair) all the plastics off the bike, wired it up in "mock up" fashion. No hyperflash, white on running lights, indicators when they should be on, but no turney-off the DRL's. I'm going to the pub now to sulk

Has anyone tried wiring this up using the Live lead from the Town lights to the indicator Earth, I've used this option to good effect on installs on other vehicles to make outline lights flash with the indicator.
