Whats the legislation in the States about driving classic ex race cars and similar on American highways, I've seen T.V programmes showing dealers/traders driving what I would think are non road compliant vehicles and also specialist built bikes on public roads, is there a roadworthiness or compliance requirement ?
Give me an example of what you're thinking of. For instance, you can't run a top fuel dragster on the highway or a race car from NASCAR (I think)..

And that's the crux of it all, in that the States have different laws so what might be legal in one may not be legal in another. We bought our 2013 Prius v in Florida. It has tinted glass that's legal there but might not be in Virginia. Knock on wood, haven't been scrutinized yet, although the wife was pulled over for speeding and the local deputy didn't say anything about it. Stuff like that is subjective based on the officer's mood at the time. It all depends on what they want to enforce at the time.
I went to court for a ticket some years back and one of the people there had a ticket for no front license plate. VA requires front and back, but many states only have the back as a requirement.
Red Victor is about as extreme and road legal as ya get over here.

I enjoy watching a programme called Chasing Classic Cars featuring Wayne Carini, he seems to drive cars such as hot rods and even classic ex indianapolis race cars on public roads.
George makes a good point as his example car, whilst basically a drag car does actually comply with U.K traffic regulations
Also I've seen programmes featuring bike building in the States where the finished machine is road tested apparently before it's been independently checked for roadworthiness.
Well sometimes these shows get special dispensations in running these vehicles....you don't see the cops in the background blocking traffic. Again, it depends on the state he's driving the vehicle in. Are your laws the same in Scotland and Wales?
Very broadly all the same in UK countries.
Scotland now has a lower drink/drive limit, and by some forgotten piece of legislation they have to place speed limit signs on motorways that we do not in England, although the limit [70mph] is the same

Yeah, I've watched that show before. We have several like it over here.
Rog, in the US the rules w.r.t. roadworthiness vary greatly from state to state as do the rules on driving an untested vehicle on public roads. In some states there are annual vehicle inspections, in some only before ya sell the vehicle.
That said a cop can still ticket ya for an unsafe vehicle, but from what I have seen over there they have to be pretty bad.
Unsurprisingly in the poorer areas ya see a fair number of "beaters" on the road.
Thanks George, it seemed kinda wackie to me that obvious non road vehicles can/were 'road tested' especially when we have so many requirements here
