Title: Bike stored outside
Post by: Kylinski on January 01, 2017, 03:36:01 PM
Happy New Year to all!

Due to the size of the GTR, I'm having to store mine outside, within my garden walls, with a quality cover, an Oxford Protex stretch and of course various locks and chain.

(My previous ZZR's I've managed to get through a single door, out of the elements)

Does anyone else keep their bikes outdoors, if so, what is the best way to keep the elements from the discs and surrounding parts?

I've coated the disc bolts and floaters with ACF50 (plus the rest of bike).
Will this be enough to keep the rust at bay?

Apologies for the first silly question of the year!  :embarrassed:

Matey be careful of a loose cover as the windy days will move it about which in time will polish the paint off your mirrors and any other painted part that the cover rests on. Ask me how i know 😡😡😡😱. Just a heads up thats all 👍

it's difficult to advise without knowing more detail about your storage circumstances,  but would it be possible to erect a storage shed ?

You need to protect your investment

Good point. I bought an XL cover which seems to fit well. The panniers have been removed though I'm sure the cover will accomadate them. The elasticated bottom pulls the cover in around the wheels, it's also a heavy jobbie!
I'm hoping the wind won't be such an issue with the walls

That would be ideal . . . If I had the space

Is there a neighbour you could rent a garage from for a small fee?

Dont know how much space you have but a mate of mine had one of these and secured it to a concrete floor.Worked well.  http://www.bike-home.co.uk/large-motorbike-shed-garage-tent-barn.html  +1 on the acf 50.

Unfortunately I don't know anyone around here with a garage. Would there be an issue with insurance though?

Bike Barn.
Takes about the same floor space but protects better.

Yep, this is doable

I'll measure up tomorrow to make sure there's enough room.

Has anyone have one or know someone? Can't see any reviews?

Over £400 with the floor seems to be a lot of money for what it is ( Bike Barn)

There are others at half the price, not sure about the quality though

I'm wondering if the GTR will fit into a standard bike barn with panniers removed?

Barn size length 108 x width 42 x height 63

Bike size length 88 x width 38 x height 56

I have used a family tent in the garden before with good results. cheap solution and caused no damage to the bike

Another great idea I would consider if space wasn't a major factor, hence the Bike Barn being my best option at the mo.

You need to act quick or your pristine GTR won't be much longer

I've decided on a Bike Barn but I not sure whether to go for the standard or tourer size.
Decisions decisions!

Are you the same davetherave of ZX14R.co.uk fame?

Wouldnt it be best to get the biggest size that you can get in the space - not alot of difference in price but you have it just in case

I think I'm gonna have a go at building an enclosure for it using the fence it's up against as one side (the back), the front will lift away, the top will fold up and the sides will fold back. It will all be padlocked up to stop the curious having a look.

Sounds complicated but I think it will be more permanent than a tent barn

Watch this space . . .

Another option would be to get a cheap or used shed and modify the front to get the bike in.
A friend got a 6x10' shed and converted it to 2 door front.
If you do, remember to reinforce the base to take the sidestand or centrestand.
A steel plate works well.

I squeeze mine into an 8 x 6 garden shed. When I bought it I had it made with double doors on the end. I also laid another floor on top of the original. The bike even shares the shed with my work bench. Where there's a will there's a way.

£400 to protect a £12k bike and cost is an issue !!!!!!!!!🤔
