Planning this trip with my son in law next year, Santander to Pyrenees then to St Malo but got stung last time by toll road charges. Any idea how I can sort route avoiding toll roads? Thanks all.
Search out the D and N numbered roads. Most of them are well cared for and fairly quiet with nice scenery.
Have a great trip
Thanks bud.

How do you plan your routes?
Tomtom and Garmin have options to avoid tolls and/or motorways. I always start off with "Aviod tolls". Google maps has a similar thing under Options when route planning.
The people who set the fees are clever. Its easy to save a couple of hours or so by paying the toll. Compare this to the extra fuel, possibly another cafe stop and you can see that sometimes it makes sense to pay and go

Is free software whereby you can simply plot the route on google maps and save them to a file which can be put into your sat nav.
I used it last year and created four days routes, I did send us round a circuit once as I stuck a waypoint somewhere I shouldn't have but that was my fault.
Have a go with a local route and see how you get on.
On motorways if you pay by card at auto booths you get charged same rate as car. So if poss pay at kiosk and you will be charged less for a bike.

Used tyre the on trhe last 4 years tours, great bit of kit! Upgraded to pro so can use the app as well!
Planning way-points or dropping pins - so easy to load onto GPS also if you use one.
And like PRD states, pay cash, I know it's a ball ache but value kicks in, and the toll roads are a great way to kill the boring bits!
Thanks all, good info there.
You can buy a gizmo which you preload with cash, you simply ride up to the toll, the toll recognises your gizmo and lets you through, no stopping and getting money or cards out. Simples.
Sorry I can't remember the name as I've had a wee tipple today :mfr_lol: but I'm sure a simple internet search would sort it.

Im starting in bilbao then down to portugal along the south coast of spain to andorra over the pyrenees and up through France to roscoff for the ferry home
Have to ask why you're using toll roads when France and Spain are full of class riding roads which are all free. Get a good map and just plot the wriggly bits. If you should be using a prat nav tell it to avoid toll roads. Avoid Biarritz and Bordeaux to avoid the traffic.
I've done the trip twice and it's a blast.

That's a hell of a long journey! There's enough decent roads in Picos and Pyrenees without going south
I dont have any rush only thing i must do is get on the ferry at portsmouth after that 2 weeks to go where i want
