Title: Radio
Post by: Wookie on December 13, 2016, 08:43:25 PM
I have wanted for a while now to install a radio ..either fm or dab .
Has anyone done this .. and if so what worked .
I have tried a couple of radio/mp3 combos with poor success.
Help

I just listen to the voices in my head for the most part.  They keep me company but if I really want to listen to music, I use my phone and link it to my Sena SMH10.

Yep I link mine thru my Autocom but it seems to use a hell of a lot of data .
That's why am wondering about a radio .
As for the voices I have a couple spare if you would like em Jim

My music is stored on the phone.  I don't stream it from the cloud.

Well as far as voices go, the more the merrier...

My previous bike was a Goldwing, fitted with radio and God knows how many speakers.
I never switched the radio on!
Not my cup of tea while I'm riding.

If I can get rid of the wind noise that Grant is generating, I'll hear his engine too!
I have a Calsci on its way!

tried this a while ago with a jensen marine fm radio. Reception was very hit and miss.Tried aerial cables running all over the bike but it seems the bike itself does not make a good base plate for reception.Even tried a cb set up with a signal converter. No joy.Tried a harley d hidden antenna (powered} but ended up scrapping the idea.Best i found was to use my phone on a Ram mount.Extend the Headphone cable (it acts as an aerial) then either Get a splitter for headphones or bluetooth ya tunes.I think Jensen marine radio do a portable radio to mount anywhere you like. Havent looked at DAB radio.Maybe worth a try/ Cheers.

Yep Wildy the ground plane seems to be the issue . Soooo me thinks Radio 2 will have to stay at home .. I have a multitude of mp3 players and tunes on twatnav too all piped via Bluetooth to me Autocom ...
Speaking of which HOLY UNDERPANTS VAT MAN.!!!! It's awesome .. up graded this year from a active plus to the full on super pro .
The audio is soo loud compared to the previous one . I installed it and yep turned the volume up full as that's what we had to do previously ... it blew me bloody visor off
So I turned it down and went for a road test yesterday ........
The clarity and quality of the output is amazing ...took BOB upto a 100 mph .. and as the volume adjusts with speed/ambient noise it was as clear as a bell .. couldn't do more than 70 mph with the last one .
Well worth the cash

Check out the schuberth pro and s2 helmets fitted with a SRC collar they have radio built in you can set the stations .
Worth looking into if your are changing your helmet in the future.
I have the SRC fitted to my pro flipfront helmet paired to my garmin 660 satnav stored with music and set to search local radio I'm happy with it

I like how it's a collar and not on the side of the helmet.
Also the schuberth S2 and Pro helmets have an aerial built in when you fit the collar you just connect the plug easy peasy

+1 on the c3 pro. Quietest and most comfortable lid ive owned.I have the src system fitted to. Radio reception wasnt brilliant so soldered some thin copper wire to the inbuilt antenna. coiled it round inside the helmet and up into the top vent cover.Works great. :punk:

Looking forward to trying my C3 Pro with SRC system. Now I know buying a second hand lid is frowned upon, but I found a retired chap selling one who was giving up biking. He had only used it for one trip to Germany and sold his bike shortly after. It is all in mint condition and at £200 for the lot I couldn't say no!
Oh and the bike he had was a GTR, so obviously a true gent!
It feels like a slightly tighter fit compared to previous helmets of the same size, I guess that is one of the reasons they are quieter?

remember to get the correct size src system to fit your helmet  i removed the chin guard curtain thing as it got in the way of the mic boom.

As wildybeast says there are 2 sizes of the SRC collar.
As for helmet sizes as you said about the fit I have a Schuberth S2 which is xl.
Ant the C3 Pro which is only large. I think it's the flipfront the makes them a size smaller it's a bit more pliable to put on but both are superb I may purchase the collar for me S2 next year .they are different for the full face

I have a Senna Bluetooth headset with FM radio which works well. With Road Pilot app on my i phone don't need to splash out on TomTom or Garmin. App does not use any data.

I fitted a DAB radio from Halfords and connected it through my Autocom with an external antenna. It worked a treat with it mounted at the front, the fairing and screen kept 90% of the water off it; had it for 2 years and now transferred to my FJR and still working.  I'll try and add a photo if I can find one :-) P.S. won't let me upload it as it's too big

It was a Sonichi (Halfords brand I think)
http://www.halfords.com/technology/car-audio/dab-car-stereos/sonichi-s100-digital-radio-adaptor

I stuck it with double sided Velcro to the blank bit of the fairing to the left of the clocks.  I powered it from the 12v socket (hard wired it in eventually with a mini USB), ran the aerial to a bracket on the back I already had (but the front would be fine; just needs something metal to stick to (you could use the pannier lock)) and a cable from the line out to the Autocom.

It worked very well indeed :-)

Now this looks promising and thankyou for the link ... now then ! Does the unit need to be mounted onto metal to create a ground plane ?
How weather proof was it or how did u manage to keep it dry .
WoOKs got an excited tingle going on now

The radio was mounted using Velcro onto the plastic at the front; it's obvious where to put it when you have the unit in your hand.  The aerial has a magnetic base so I stuck it onto an existing antenna plate I had on the bike but you could dismantle it and put it anywhere, stick it onto the pannier locks with the magnet or put a bit of metal tape anywhere to mount it. Aerials don't need a ground plane; they are used for antennas when they transmit.

The box isn't weather proof but it gets nothing when moving and the screen comes down to cover it when stationary. I took it off if I was leaving it outdoors overnight but often forgot and I had it for a couple of years with no problem (although the charging cable got rusty).  You could wrap it in cling film if you prefer.  If you're worried about weather, I have a DAB Highway unit in a waterproof otterbox which you can buy off me, but I'd recommend trying this Halfords one first as the performance was better.

I've tried lots of DAB solutions so let me know if you need any more advice.
