Title: Pyrenees
Post by: Trophyrider on November 25, 2016, 05:30:45 PM
Anyone ridden from Bilbao to Andorra over the Pyrenees? Looking at going in May 17 and need pointers on routes / accommodation etc and also how long etc.

I did it back in the 90's but sadly I can't remember too much about the route except it turned very foggy at altitude, Spain is a tremendous country to tour/ride in, sadly my mrs believed the scare stories from a couple of years ago regarding tourists being mugged and was frightened off, she also hates the costa del britain and (wrongly) thought that was all the tourist industry had to offer, thankfully we watched Rick Stein's long weekend in Cadiz last night and see liked what she saw so fingers crossed.

Enjoy the roads, weather and the tour  :biker3:

A friend did it years ago and said there is only one road through Andorra, but it is a fun one.
Stay in Andorra as it's way cheaper.
He did it on a Trophy 1200 :D

Hi trophyrider.

I did this on my GSX1400 in 2014 (Trip report):
If you just want the pictures: https://www.flickr.com/photos/rynglieder/albums/72157644528349038

I hope it is of help, if you need any detail drop me a message.

Enjoy your trip and stay safe.

Pete

(Edit; link to trip report deleted as the old GSX1400.org forum went down and was never revived by the moderators as they seem to have lost interest).

Make sure you ride around the Picos mountains first, beautiful quiet roads, I found them better than the Pyrenees, place to stay is Potes

I would agree with the above, the Picos are worth a week on thier own, a day each way on the ferry and then place yourself near Potes. You can then have a week of as much or little riding you want each day on some very spectacular roads.

The Hotel Rebecco at Funte De did nicely for us and at the time it could be booked with your crossing through Brittany Ferries.

Photos here again for those that like pictures

Were off to the Picos in several weeks, I recognise some pics especially the hotel near Fuente De as we ate there

Cheers Paul,

If you click on the individual photos there should be a little map block in all of the information underneath.

Click on the map and it will zoom in to the location in greater detail. There's probably the odd one without a location, sometimes I am too quick to get the camera out without making a mental note of where I was. If there is something of particular interest let me know and I will try to expand.

Enjoy your trip, I hope you have better weather than we did - the pictures don't tell the whole story. I had finally talked the wife into taking our first bike trip abroad and thought I could no go wrong with Spain. As I recall we arrived on a Saturday and didn't get a fully dry day until Wednesday. The rest of the week made it worthwhile though and fortunately she wasn't put off touring.

Stay safe.

Pete.
