Title: Aftermarket screens
Post by: Robin on November 16, 2016, 10:55:43 PM
Hi folks

I'm pretty new to the GTR forum so forgive me if this point has been covered before.  I've just moved from a ZZR to a new GTR and would really like to benefit from the experiences of more established riders; first of all to say - I really love the bike for all the reasons that you already know, it's smooth and poweful, really comfortable and handles beautifully.  Is there a downside?  Yes, to me the screen is really disappointing.  Unlike some riders I don't find buffeting or weather protection a problem, but the noise is a major distraction and marrs what would otherwise be - to me - the perfect bike. By adjsuting the height of the screen you can find the "sweet spot" where the noise is minimised, but it is still noisy.  I think this is due to the poor airflow with the airstream being broken up on the trailing edge of the screen rather than being deflected so that it flows smoothly upwards and over the rider's head.  I have done a bit of research and there does seem to be an aftermarket screen which might overcome overcomes this problem - the Cee Baileys Euro Touring Screen.  Unfortunately these cost around £200, a price I would be willing to pay if I could be sure it would cure the problem.  If anyone out there has experience of these screens or any other helpful advice, I would love to hear from them!

a warm welcome to the forum  Robin, and I now you will love your 2016 GTR. There is soooo much help and info on here so don't ever be afraid to ask any questions.

I have a 2016 GTR, its my fourth, so I can recall how screens have developed over the years.

I dont know what you riding regime will be but I can recommend the Laminar Lip, which is an addition to the top of your standard screen and wont cost anything like as much as an aftermarket screen.

Good luck and if there's anything else we can help with just ask

If you use the searcb facility for Laminar Lip you will find plenty other advice

Hiya Robin, Welcome to the madhouse. Us old farts are ganging up on the young whipper snappers now. I changed my screen, which is the older one without the vent, and put on an MRA Vario. It works reasonably well for me but its not perfect. Just an improvement on the old one.
Hope you are enjoying the change of bike and maybe you could look at joining Syd and myself at next years forum meet.

Hi Robin
I have the after market tall screen fitted as I am on tall side @ 6' 3" and still found trouble with buffeting and wind noise, so went with the laminar lip from eBay (322172957996) works brilliantly, so quiet can now here road and engine noise from gap by bars, also no buffeting now.
The laminar lip works by smoothing out the flow of air as it leaves the tip of the screen.

Another vote for the Laminar Lip here as well!
Went with a Calsci XL just after I bought the bike, yep, that was quiet, but just too big! Too removed from the air flow!.
Gone back to standard screen (2008) with lip, really happy, albeit still suffer some noise but little turbulence.
It's a real issue that is only resolved by trial, we're all different, posture, height, helmets.
Try and ride as many as you can with different options, could save yourself some serious monies!

Hi Robin

Welcome.  ive only had my GTR for 10 months or so but had exactly the same issue.  noise was horrendous!  ive been through 3 screens from Std, MRA and now..  a Calsci XL.  its worked for me 100%.  i have to have it right up to fix the wind noise but its made it 95% better

as a note, i also managed to find a Std Screen with a Laminar lip on from ebay for £11 !!  result so what i did was fit the laminar lip to the Calsci and its far better

Calski XL widely vailbale on ebay bud

hope helps

Hi Robin and welcome ..
I took rogs O.C advice and fitted the laminar lip to my 16 plate kwak .. it works damn good .. noise down by 90% and still air on me bonce .
I am 6ft and fitted the lip  so when the screens fully extended the top of the lip is just below my horizontal eye line .
Hope this helps

Thanks for all the good advice and help on this issue, I've now got plenty of ideas to work on!  The Laminar Lip sounds good and if all else fails then the Calsci screen could be worth a try.  When I've taken the issue a bit further, I'll get back on the forum and let you know what worked.

Thanks once again, Robin.

Robin,

If its any help to you I have a screen with a Laminar lip that you can borrow to try out. I'm coming up to London on Dec 10th and could leave it with Syd if you like. Let me know as I have to clamber up into the loft to get it.

When I was a wee little one in the 50's, my nickname was Robin.  Mom said I had my mouth open for food all the time, I might as well be one.

Very happy with the laminar X creen from MRA.
Coming from a bmw tourer only issue on my Gtr was the screen, wind and buffering indeed.
Was looking for years and last year i had found the perfect solution for me anyway.
Its great now and whats special bout this one.. You can always adjust it the way you want !

Good luck :punk:

Picked up late on this thread, so big warm welcome Robin, glad you found the GTR Forum. Great bunch of people on here. I have the laminar lip fitted to my bike so if you want another ride on my "Team Green" then let me know, we could meet up somewhere ( maybe Finchingfield for Sunday morning coffee). It seems like all other aspects of the bike have ticked the boxes, congratulations, I know how much you treasured your ZZR, but at our age the GTR gives that extra bit of comfort with no real loss of the thrill of the ride.

Mo, not ready for Saga yet, but I agree we are getting quite long in the tooth  :mfr_lol:

Because Saga and a good brew go hand in hand but living in Devon you have to have your jam and cream with scones. The burning question is -  Do you put the cream on top of the jam or the jam on top of the cream?

Haven't been on the forum for a couple of days and only just noticed Syd and Mo's kind offers.  Just had my Laminar Lip delivered today so I won't need to take you up on your generosity!  Will report back when I've given it a try although from what everyone says, it seems to do the trick for most riders.  Glad to see that this thread has provide the opportunity for a bit of levity!
