I rode a new GTR today and was pretty impressed apart from the bars which I found too low and the mirrors which gave a great view of the handlebar ends.
Does anyone out there keep fule consumption figures? (I mean over a period of time and not guesswork :) ). Fuel isn't going to get any cheaper and I get 51 mpg from my 1250 Bandit. Also, will I get 9000 miles from a rear tyre like I do now?
Oh by the way, I don't believe on-board computers. My car lies as did the previous one. I use a spreadsheet for my figures. Anyone else?
I don't count it on a regular basis but I guess I have averaged around 50 to the gallon over 5,000 miles. Rear tyre has squared off at 5,000 miles. Front is half worn.
How the hell did you get 9000 miles out of a rear tyre on a 1250 Bandit?
The original tyres were far to soft and lasted a couple of 1000 miles. From then on I used Dunlop Roadsmart 2s and was happy to get 6000 miles out of those. Well, I went through the Alps and to Scotland a couple of times and loved the awesome low down acceleration of the Bandit out of tight corners and when passing the white sign with the black cross bar at the end of a 30 zone, though. :D :D. I used to love it when the sports bikes of my mates suddenly got very small in the mirror because by the time they switched down 2 gears I was already gone.
On average I managed to get 10 miles per liter - sorry, I haven't got a clue how much that is in miles per gallon and the GTR uses about the same if I hold back and ride mainly A roads and motorways in overdrive. The computer says my average so far is about 44.5 mpg. So if a gallon is about 4 and a half liter that would be about right. But then I have only done just over 750 miles and had to take it easy and keep the revs below 4000 until last week.

I use Michelin Pilot Road 2s. I don't hang about but I get into top gear and stay there most of the time. I like the low down grunt and had the same from the GTR but much smoother.
Hi ya Kieth Having just changed a 1250 for my GTR I can tell you that I think you will find the GTR does very similar mileage to the Bandit, I have never got less than 50 mpg and do like to get a shift on , but must confess I dont go on motorways. I agree with Mecki my original tyres on the Bandit lasted 2100 miles :o and remember 600 of those were whilst running in, I then put pilot road 2s on and they lasted 6 thousand miles, but gave me the feeling that they were made of wood, truly shocking. I sold my Bandit coz I could not get comfy on it, even with a gel seat, my legs, arms, and shoulders ached, all of those problems have been eleviated with the GTR. I suppose at the end of the day you get what you pay for, the Bandit is a budget bike, and the GTR is'nt. In my experience there would be no measurable difference between running costs of either bike. Hope this helps. ps if you decide to keep the bandit I have a genuine Suzuki gel seat and a baglux tank harness if they are any good to you. ::) cheers Geoff ;D
Has anyone been in the dash setup?
There is a USA and UK setting for MPG
Mine was set to USA for some reason which means my MPG is not as good as I thought as the US gallon is less than ours. Damn
I got ~ 10k of motorway miles out of my PR2s
And fuel consumption is down to how much you open the throttle. If you're going to sit 100 mph expect crap figures.
The Bridgestones I had on my GTR lasted almost into double figures but I'm running PR3's now. I've only had the PR3's on a couple of thousand miles and they look untouched.
I reguarly get 50+mpg in various riding environments. Interestingly when I returned from my very recent Scottish trip having covered 1100.1 miles my mpg was 53.6 which I think is excellent.
Another thing, Keith.
If you are complaining about the mirrors on the GTR, what do you see in the mirrors of your Bandit?
Your elbows, right?
I don't know which model GTR you've been looking at - I heard on the earlier models they show mainly the panniers - but on my 2011 the mirrors, even though they aren't adjustable, actually let me see what's behind me. On the Bandit I had to move my upper body to be able to do that.
Mines a 2008 GTR and I can see plenty of the road behind and to the side of me. On the CB1300 I used to have I had to fit mirror extensions to get a view beyond my shoulders so the GTR is way better than any other bike I've had.
Typical fuel consumption is around
Full Eco mode = 52 mpg , giving me a tank range of around 180-210 miles
Full mode = 45 mpg in non Eco mode, giving me a tank range of around 160 miles
The mirrors on mine 2010 model are very good and are adjustable
Steve
My experiences are similar to Steve's, mine has averaged 53mpg in the 11,500 since new. I only use the bike for commuting, 104 miles per day, and a real mixture of motorway boredom and B-road fun.
If you are in the sit-at-70-in-top-and-enjoy-the-scerery type of mood, 60+ average is very easy.
I got 8,500 miles from the original Bridgestones, on PR3s now and all indications are that they will last a similar distance.
Get it bought, you will love it. I find the mirrors and bars perfect on my 2010.
Martin.
The mirrors on mine 2010 model are very good and are adjustable
Did they change that on the latest model or how do you adjust your mirrors?
There is nothing about the mirrors in the manual and I didn't want to break anything so I didn't try to push to hard, but they seem to be immovable.
When I collected the bike last year the mirrors weren't quiet right and you can adjust the mirror glass by pushing it but they are very stiff.
i think i must be heavy throttle handed. i'm getting 42 mpg out of mine all A and B roads, commuting and weekend blasts. As for the mirrors, 2009 bike and i think they are great having spent the last 20 years looking at my elbows on sport bikes. Yes you can see the bar ends and tops of panniers if fitted but you still get a great vibe free view of whats behind you.
2008 and the mirrors are better than anything I've ever ridden, except for the GTR1000.
As for fuel consumption, I averaged 46Mpg over the first 10k miles.
The computer claimed 47Mpg so it's not far off.
Gave up on the spreadsheet after that.
Now I average about 44Mpg (computer) but I do cane it something rotten and I carry a lot more weight than most (me = 27 Stone (170Kg, 380lbs))
