The D999 from near Nimes to almost all the way to Millau is a MUST.  About 120 Ks and a good 2 hours of fun

I'd give the camping a miss.... too much arsing about after a days ride. Good shower, good meal, a few beers and a good bed to make you feel refreshed and ready for the next day. Plenty of decent places around at reasonable price.... plus you can hang yer kit up and give it a good airing.

A good base for a few days is Castellane, near the Gorge du Verdon. I usually hire a mobile home from one of the sites close to town and then have a couple of days of rest and local riding in this area. The town has a good number of pavement cafes where you can sit, eat and drink for as long as you want, watching bikes pass by on the Alpine route and the gorge itself is a superb ride out for the day.

If your wife is going with you, a visit to the perfume factories at Grasse is often worthwhile. It is about 45 minutes ride from Castellane and she will be able to buy the "brand name" products in plain packaging, saving you a small fortune! My daughter still buys from one of these outlets some four years after I took her there and, as she lives in London, says it is very good value compared with buying locally.

Take Route des Grande Alpes down from Thonon Les Bains through Morzine and down to Chamonix, Bourg St Maurice and down through Val D'Isere, Barcelonette and on to Digne.
Either head due south or to Marseille then pick up the Route Napoleon for the return Grasse, Gap, Grenoble back to the west towards the Alps again, Albertville and north.
Get hold of the RiDE Guide to Europe for the routes and advice.  Great publication
