Which is the better satnav, or are they much the same, just different names?
Garmin!
They are most definitely NOT the same ... GARMIN every time.
Garmin
I have had both IMHO without a doubt garmin rules.
Wook has had a garmin zumo since 2005.
It has been trouble free and it must have covered 100 k in ALL weather's.
The upside of the garmin is that you can plot an intricate route on your pc .then download onto the garmin
Hope this helps
+1 for Garmin.
But remember, tell it you're a car and it works out the quickest way from A to B.
Tell it you're a bike and it works out an interesting twisty route.
Cheers
Paul B.

Yep, just thought it might be the same bike charge mount, but that would be far to easy :whistling:
I can only go on my experience with car sat navs.
I don't like the interface of Garmin and prefer the TomTom.
Therefore I bought the Rider 400 which I'm very pleased with.
Cheaper than the Garmin equivalent too!
:agree:
Couldn't get on with the Garmin front end also, so TT rider V5 and use the "Myrouteapp" for planning, no issues as yet.
Play with as many as you can, it really does seem to be personal preference from experience!
Just brought the 595LM used it in the car first day on a drive to Bristol.
I prefer the Tom Tom lay out but once connected to Smart Link on the phone works very well with traffic etc etc
Tom Tom 400 for me but takes a lot of getting used to
TomTom, Garmin are rubbish. I have a £700 Garmin integrated into my bmw, I have bolted on a TomTom so I can go on the route I planned. As I have both I can compare ;)
The 550 Rider is one I would recommend ;)
TomTom after sales service us good, as well. I bought my 400 in Feb 2016 and they have today agreed to do a repair on it. I'm sure this will a swap out and replacement unit. No charge
I've always used Garmin (over a period of more than 20 years) both for aviation purposes and within cars and on motorcycles. To my mind, nothing else compares in terms of reliability.
I speak as I find......... Having had both Tom Tom (Rider) and a Garmin 660 and now a 590 LM, I can say that I prefer Garmin.
I'm sure like 45rpm/33rpm, 8-track/compact cassette, Mac/PC or automatic/manual gearboxes there is a 'technically better' answer but for most it will be personal preference.
Regarding an earlier reply, I cannot get on with TomTom front end, so would always prefer Garmin
Hehe, mine is better than yours is always a good way to stimulate conversation.
There is not much activity on this forum, I guess people have moved on ....
I prefer the Garmin sat nav to Tom Tom, but again it's just down to personal taste. I have the Nav 6, Garmin basically but it works and it's there if I get lost.
i will probably get shot down in flame's for this, here's my opinion, having both,i have a GARMIN ZUMO 660LM & aTOTOM RIDER 550,out of the 2 i do prefer the TOMTOM RIDER 550,it seem's to update the camera update's more often than the GARMIN,each to there own opinion.

If it suits you better then that's what you should use tapps.
I only once had a problem with my Tom Tom Rider many years ago, I sent it back to Tom Tom and they replaced it with a brand new one, in my opinion that was excellent service
I don't think there's a lot in it, personal choice as LW says.
I've always had tom toms, last year when we got a real soaking for 8 hours or so my TT400 let in water.
It was well out of guarantee but I didn't pay all the premium over a car sat-nav for it to leak.
I called them, they took it back, fixed it and updated the software to TT440 (I think).
Great customer service.
Less good is their route planner. Having planned a route thro' Switzerland this year avoiding all the autoroutes we got as far as Thon where it tried to chuck us on an autoroute. No toll roads, no motorways specified when planning. Worked out a route myself at that point via Interlaken and the Grindelwald pass. Could have been an expensive error if I'd taken their route as gospel.
All sat-navs should be used with a dollop of common sense.
Just got back from touring the pico's in Spain and the phone did a great job ,as in this months ride mag phone v sat nav they give the phone as the winner ,, got rid of my garmin I find google maps easy to use just get a quad lock for a holder and away you go ,
Yep the mobile is certainly going to take over, look at 'Apple Car Play', just connect your phone and you have full GPS and functionality - this is becoming standard on all new cars. I bet this will come to motorcycles in the near future.
I have had just about every TomTom Rider GPS, the 550 is by far the best and a much needed update on the previous models. It has WiFi capability, so no need for wires to get updates direct from your phone if needed. I find if you sell your current GPS on eBay as soon as the next model is released, you get a crazily high price and it only costs about £50 to upgrade to the latest model.
My view is Garmin is best for circumnavigation the globe by sea (the name taken after some famous chap I believe ), or for piloting your aircraft (I can only afford a model aircraft unfortunately- there are some rich fellows on this site), or crossing the desert where there are no defined roads and you can add OS maps etc... The Garmin has loads of functionality most of which I never use. The TomTom cannot touch Garmin in that respect. However for road use the TomTom has the edge by miles as that is what its primary design scope is all about, and works for me.
:biker3:
Now I just need to start a thread to say that the Slate Blue 2016 model is the best colour, that should get people participating and active LOL.
Too late! It was decided long ago that the black ones are the fastest.

Jusy got it back. Fully working again and the TT400 that I sent has come back as a TT450. No charge. Happy bunny
That's a great result Burchy
I use TomTom everyday to time manage my business routes. The front end interface is intuitive and the units reliable. I was looking forward to the Garmin badged as BMW for the K16. What a disappointment. For everyday all day operations it uses to many multi key entry's to retrieve and or use the information needed. Not impressed by its inability when sat in the Pyrenees to find Pamplona in any continent other than North America !!!
So for the KTM it's TomTom and I'm back in my comfort zone.
Like PC or Apple having totally different front end interfaces to achive in essence the same results
Still everyone to their own :punk:
Yes we have had some amusing journeys whilst following the BMW Garmin.
