Title: 10,000 miles
Post by: routemaster on June 22, 2011, 08:10:05 AM
Hi

Over the weekend my GTR passed the 10,000 mile mark  :) :) :)
10,250 miles in less 10 months from new and all social, domestic and pleasure riding  :) :) :)

I have really enjoyed riding the bike and it is a real pleasure to take it out every time  :) :), as you may have gathered whether it is tight technical twisties or more open progressive roads  :) :)

In 10 months I have only had one minor problem & that was recently when the rear shock preload adjuster becoming very stiff to turn but that has now freed up.

Accessories - R&G Adventure bars and the next accessory is a coffee cup holder which I have just ordered  ;)
The biggest improvement was changing the standard tyres to PR3's which now have over 5000 miles clocked up and still looking very good  :)

I've just dropped ours off for it's 11250 miles service and to have the Top Block crash bungs fitted.

I agree about the PR3s. We were running PR2s before which I also liked but I think the 3s are better in the wet. They felt a bit peculiar to begin with - it felt like like the bike was squirming on the road even on the straight - but I either got used to it or it stopped once the deep tread had worn down a bit. They've been on around 4k miles so not long enough for me to know how long they last but we have around 4k miles planned over the next three weeks so I'll replace them with another set before the Wolfhound Rally.

Fair play sir, sounds like you are really enjoying her.

Can I ask how the finish is holding up? I am sure you remember I bought mine at roughly the same time, and I have done similar miles, but mine has been used only for commuting so has possibly seen more rain, salt and hosepipe dodging.

The finish is poor in places on mine - mainly exhaust, numerous fixing bolts, footpegs and the steering stem fixing nut.

Be keen to understand if yours has faired better, or been looked after more.

Martin.

Hi

I tend to ride all year around and in most weathers, although during the winter months I will only average 500-700 miles a month rather than 1000+ during the rest of the year.

If the weather has been bad during a ride the bike will get a hose down (Sainsbury's jet wash) at the end of the day but other than that it tends to get a wash and polish about every 2-4 weeks depending on how I feel. Periodically it gets sprayed with Scottoiler's FST365.

The finish is still very good and no signs of deterioration although I thought there was a rusty spot on one of the exhaust welds/brackets but I think it was just accumulation of dirt.

The standard of the finishes does seem to be very good and on a par with previous bikes (Honda's) and in some cases better than I have owned (Aprillia).

Congrats on getting the first 10k done. Here's to the next 10k!

Just out of curiosity, who here has the highest mileage on their bike? Mine is ~36k so far

As for build quality, I've the odd rust spot, but considering its ridden 90% of the year and I clean it about twice a year, I'm impressed.

ACF50 is also my best friend.

The highest mileage on any of my bikes was the last one, a Honda CBF1000 which had 32k (over 3 1/2 years) when I traded it in for the GTR.

Some dude in the US had 100k on his bike. I'll be celebrating when I hit 50k

VFR800 did about 200k - and the new owner is still happy!

Vivian is at a smidge over 40k miles.
600 miles per week commuting sure piles the miles on.  :(
Was at 23k this time last year.

I'll try but it'll be a while as the clock on the GTR goes to 999,999 which is a sh!t load of miles!  ;D
I've clocked 2 GTR1000's but they only go to 99,999.

Nearly 6000 miles on mine now and all is well on the finish front .. looking as good as the day I picked it up ... although it hasn't been through a winter yet ! I had a VFR 800 from new and kept it for 6 years and covered 36000 miles on it .. work/commute/plearsure and it was still mint when I sold it ... perhaps I have OCD I don't know but my bikes always get a good wash and clean up every week.

Every week?! I wish I was as diligent. Ours is in the garage and desperate for a clean as it's covered in flies and filthy after the weekend but we're still knackered (I think we're getting too old for this lark). One of us had better get out and do it soon though as I promised to upload some pictures of the Top Block crash bungs and I'm not taking pictures of it while it's in that state!
