Title: Seriously considering a GTR
Post by: StickyOne on August 10, 2016, 09:13:47 PM
Good evening from Maidstone.
I'm currently the owner of a Honda Goldwing and I make no apologies for saying that I have enjoyed the Goldwing immensely.
I am however not getting any younger and it's a big heavy bike.
I will be therefore changing to something lighter.
I have test ridden the BMWs, Triumphs, Harley's, etc and you'll be pleased to hear that my favourite is the GTR that I rode out from Daytona at Ruislip, who were without doubt extremely helpful and obliging.
I did however find the bars slightly too low and the screen a bit flimsy and blustery.
So I hope to get some pointers from the experienced GTR owners on the above points.
Happy days ahead!
Barry

Easily reminded, you can get bar risers which both lift and pull back nearer to you should you require it, and stick a laminar lip on the top of the screen to deflect the air and away you go.

As someone who is 6' 3" I find the bike perfect for me, I used to change bikes every two years but this one has lasted five and I have no intention of selling it now.

Welcome to the crazy house, you will find out all sorts here which may help your decision.

We all like pictures of new rides so when yer ready post a few and also post up in introductions to let us get to know each other

:185: to the forum. Being an outcast who no longer owns a GTR after upgrading to a K1600 it should be difficult for me to recommend a GTR however I still would do.

A word of warning about the risers. I had them fitted on the bike when I got it and I removed them; they do affect the handling.  I would buy a bike without them and see if you get used to it before investing in them.

You could buy one from eBay with a touring screen AND cruise control for a bargain at the moment

Welcome to the forum Stickyone....like those who have previously posted, I have a GTR with bar risers and a Laminar Lip on the screen. I personally have not had any handling problems with the bar risers fitted and the Lip works well. I have had a  Goldwing, the BMW Tourers, Triumph Trophy, Honda, Pan Europeans, Yamaha FJ1300 and a few that I have forgotten....the GTR is the bike for me, and as Debs says....put it into warp mode and Wooooooooo...

You forgot the Triumph 1050 Sport and the Ducati. You must have had the GTR for a couple of months now so we will be looking for the next change  :mfr_lol: :mfr_lol:
I have bar risers and have no problems with handling. The MRA screen with the lip works for me.

Oh! I almost forgot. Welcome to the madhouse Stickyone

The Kawasaki bagster gel seat also lowers it about 25 mm a bit more footing.
I'm sure there is one on here for sale at a bargain price  :whistling:

Good evening all.
Thanks very much for the warmest of welcomes. Feeling at home already.
I tested the BMW K1600GT today.
That's all the BMW tourers tested and I'm not overly struck on them.
I've made up my mind, I will be joining your fold.
All the above information is very much appreciated and has been instrumental in my decision.
When it comes to me buying one, does anyone have any pointers as to what to look for in a second hand one? Perhaps there's a thread already on the subject? I'd like to think I can pick up a well cared for, low mileage and post 2010 bike.
Thanks again

make sure the rear suspnsion adjuster is free to turn

I would always recommend a good warranty on any used bike purchase.

Good luck with your decision making and post some pictures once you have your new bike....congratulations

I can now confirm that despite me knowing nothing about tumble dryers, I am now the owner of Peter PRD's previous black GTR.
The nice chaps at Wheels let me test ride it and persuaded me to part with some money, although I exaggerate a tad - I didn't need persuading!
Collecting first week of September.
Yee Haa!!

I needed one there and then. I went from supremely smooth and fast to clankety clank clank and really fast .. just not turbine smooth fast ! They are a great bike and whilst I always say that I would never buy another one I have started looking at the alternative but with a german badge on it  :whistling: :whistling:

Howard/Nigel whichever you may be,
I tested the GS last week. I took out the GS, the ST and the K1600.
If I were to choose one it would be the ST but the engine, being 2 cylinders, just wasn't smooth enough for me. Changing from a Goldwing with a super smooth inline 6 engine I wanted something as smooth but lighter. The GS was fun to ride but wouldn't suit as a tourer. The ST was a lovely handling bike but as i say I didn't like the engine and the K1600 was neither smooth or light and very clunky. I was really disappointed with it.
The GTR ticks every one of my boxes.
I pick up Peter's ex on the 1st of next month and can't wait to ride her (sorry him, he's name is Grant so must be a male) home.
I've already ordered a Laminar Lip!

Grant is sitting very happily in my garage today.
I collected her, sorry him, from Wheels yesterday lunchtime.
Rode up the A1 and A52 to Bottesford to see my sister and then my mum.
Then back down to Barking to visit my aunt and then to Hornchurch for a pint with a couple of mates.
Arrived home at 1am this morning and introduced her (him! I'll get used to her being him soon!) to the garage.
Got up early this morning to tinker, as you do!
Happy days!
