Really miffed, bought a pair of Gore-Tex Alpine Stars just over three years ago, they really have failed me big time. Wet whenever it rains starting at the toes!
So looking for a new pair.
Best ever owned were Daytona Gore-Tex, lasted me 12 years and basically fell apart from wear, but stayed waterproof to the end.
OK, logic says replace the A-Stars with Daytona again, trouble is they are a tad pricey......ok, you get what you pay for!
But, looking around, really like the look of the lace up style CE approved boot, e.g. TCX X-Blend or Rev-it Royale H2O.
Had good experience with TCX boots previously, and Rev-it jacket, but it's just the lack of shin cover!
Both boots - style is what I could be comfy in all day - after walking the mutt my Brasher walking boots basically stay on till later in the day.
It's just the lack of shin protection, OK, they're only about 50mm shorter than most calf boots, but would this be an issue?
Anybody regularly wear this style? Are they as waterproof as they claim? Any critiscism or are the as good as calf length jobbies?
Any opinions appreciated!
Daytona GTX for me I'm afraid, waterproof, good protection and all day comfy on and off the bike, but as you say, pricey.
dya know I have had plenty different boots as I used to ride 'off road' as well as 'on road', so I am of the opinion that you must buy the best you can a££ord, generally speaking off road/adventure style boots will be better all rounders than other types.
I have a wonky foot so I must have a boot that buckles tight around my ankle hence my boots have lots of buckles which provide support.
In answer to your question.........choose an adventure style boot maybe sidi adventure goretex. I have these boots and they are superb, well made, provide protection and they ARE waterproof. ..but they will cost you £300.00
TCX Goretex boots for me, as light as trainers but with good protection. Not cheap but very comfortable and totally waterproof.

However good these would make me look, and the protection they'd offer, I can see two main issues..........
1- I'd be knackered after lacing all those pesky eyelets :sweatdrop: and.......
2 - they'd put too much pressure on the suspenders, that'd smart! :embarrassed:
But after seeing the Rocky Horror Picture show last month at Wolverhampton, gonna get me a pair ready for next time!
Best night in ages that, audience was stunning, boots sorted, now just need the basque!
Haha sounds good to me!

No problem at all
They're probably not what you are after, and I am not sure if all the shops have closed now, but I wear Hein Gericke Tuareg boots, they are like off road style.
I've had them about eight years and they are still waterproof. I really rate Hein Gericke clothing.
Ankle and shin protection are a must for me. I had a crash a few years ago and my foot got caught under the bike as it slid down the road dragging me with it, I shudder to think what would have happened if I was wearing short boots.

Good point Vixer, and glad you are ok now. I do have off road style boots but find them to uncomfortable for long tours, hence the TCX short boots. However I only wear these in the summer and then switch to my Altbergs in the winter.
I like a choice of boots to suit different rides, bit like my riding wardrobe, I have a choice of leathers, textile and armoured mesh, the mesh gear is perfect for these hot days....I appreciate it's not everyones idea, but it is nice to have the choice.
I have a pair of Altbergs that are now 22 years old
I kid you not. I got them early 90's soon after my Adv bike course and the job started to move away from leather cavalry boots .. great looking and very shiny, but of course useless in the rain ..to these "new" funny bouncy Gortex things ... they went straight into my locker and didn't come out for a few years ... then of course I realised how good they were ! Polished in the summer and Dubbin/Nickwaxed in the winter .. one set of resoling about 10 years ago and thats it. So not used every day for 22 years I admit but still fantastic quality and still looking good. !
As a side note...this stuff is great for boots, it can even stop the SIDI boot squeek

Sidi black rain bout 130 quid I have had 2 pairs the 1st lasted 8 yrs was resoled about a dozen times ..they gave up being watertight last year ..so got a new pair ... stiff ish boot NO stoopid lookin toe sliders . They look good under denI'm and are nice to walk in 😊
What he says.
:agree:
Well no one has brought this up, so I will...just substitute walking for riding.

Why dismiss "riding"
Thanks for all the advice, ended up at Demon Tweeks, tried on the Daytona Road Start GTX, in the wide fitting.........SOLD
As on the "knock" interest free also tried on a Schuberth C3 Basic, comfiest flipper I've ever tried, ..........................SOLD.
Well impressed with Tweeks as a clothing dealer, quality goods and seem to know they're stuff.
