Title: air in tyres
Post by: sheriff on June 20, 2011, 08:58:04 PM
hi fellas
i have been watching various sites and newspaper ads about air in tyres and people swapping for nitrogen filled tyres has any member done this yet? they say it holds better increases Tyre wear and doesn't loose pressure as much some scientific crap about the molecules being bigger so harder to escape don't really know all im interested in is if it works and doing my bit for the all important carbon footprint.i believe they have it in BSB and such like and i think its only about a Pound (£1) per tyre
would like any advice opinions on this one unless it has been covered before and i have missed it.

ride safe

All the benefits such as tyre wear and mpg etc are based on the tyre pressure staying at what it should be. The tyre pressure on my bike had not changed upto the point I fitted new tyres so what would be the benefit. If my tyre pressures started to change then I would be more interested/concerned about finding out why.

You could try using He which will reduce the weight of the bike LOL  :) :) :)

I'm sticking to old fashion air. Front @ 40PSI, rear at 42PSI and I fill up every 6 weeks

This one always makes me laugh, the air in your tyres now already consists of 78% nitrogen thats how much is in our atmosphere but if you want to be royally ripped off go for it, its the same for fuel --standard or super, theres no difference in performance etc, except for the profits of the fuel companies.

I stick 42 psi front and rear using the old fashioned method of air and it generally works quite well. If I lose a bit of air, well I just go right ahead and stick some more in.  ;D

And its free.

Normal air is 78% Nitrogen anyway, so I doubt the 20% Oxygen will make that much of a difference. And since 2 Oxygen atoms form 1 Oxygen molecule while Nitrogen is usually elemental I find the thing with the smaller particles hard to believe. Filling your tyres with Hydrogen doesn't sound like a good idea, though ;-).
