Post by: GTRpilot on July 18, 2016, 12:41:29 PM
Off to Spain in September for two weeks, any recommendations for the above? I've used breakdown Direct in the past for cover, just wondering who peeps use?

If you are going via Eurotunnel, give them a call. We got a good deal on breakdown and health cover which included repatriation of bike and people. Make sure any policy covers motorcycles specifically. Most health policies only cover up to 125 cc.

double check its got repatriation and note that if your bike has to be recovered due to a road traffic accident then the breakdown agents usually tell you its an insurance issue and your insurer may not repatriate .
a fellow forum member stuffed his bike into a ditch and had problems as his breakdon cover claimed it was his insurers issue and wouldnt recover his bike

also  watch out for your medical cover, only bike specific policies will cover medical expenses in the case of a biking accident , your usual £25 internet policy is no good for " dangerous activities "

honestly mate they are all out to get you !

Reason I ask is mate of mine just binned his bike en route to German GP. Contacted his breakdown provider and they are refusing to recover his bike, (Something in the small print). So he has left it and his kit at the hotel, got a flight back to UK (£400 lighter), and will have to drive back over with his van to collect it. I think he went with MCE? Nightmare!

Im with MCE and have always paid the extra to have European Breakdown Cover added on..

You have to ask for it. It is not standard.

There's 4 levels of cover...

Local Recovery Cover – UK
National Recovery Cover – UK
National Recovery & Home Assist Cover – UK
National Recovery & Home Assist & European Cover – European

Doesn't sound like it, does European cover include repatriation in the event of an accident, or just breakdown?

Breakdown cover is breakdown cover, if you want accident recovery then you need to add it or take a different policy

Insured with Bennets, just checked and it includes RAC EU cover, which, they say, also includes breakdown and in event of accident, if necessary, repatriation of bike, rider and pillion. So good to go  :whistling:

Breakdown cover is only for mechanical issues and not accident issues is what they will say

Apparently he had full cover then when he renewed it they didn't include accident cover with the renewal, he is in "discussions" with them 😨
