Hi All, i have just moved home and lost my FOB in the move, no doubt it will surface at some stage, i do have the small credit card sized spare, any pointers on where best to get a replacement and how much i should be paying for one?
Having recently replaced a lost fob myself, I can tell you that the fob will cost you £184.79 plus £9.07 for the key, you will need to add the dealer charge of programming the fob to the bike. It is a manufacturer part so is available at your local Kawasaki dealer.
It's an expensive exercise I'm afraid.
At that price Iwwouldn't bother.
Just use theother fob.
the emergency fob does not activate the KIPASS system which could be an issue with insurance cover...be warned
I saw a video on Youtube from a new GTR owner that wasn't happy with it just coming with one fob.
He ended up taking his GTR fob to a car key specialist. They cloned the RFID tag in the GTR fob, and programmed a generic car key.
Now when he holds that generic car key against the blob at the back of the ignition switch, he can start his bike. He keeps that as an emergency spare.
Cheers
Paul B.
(Probably not very helpful if you've lost the original fob. Sorry.)

Cheers

And why would that be an issue, because you would be riding the bike.
Well it seems ridiculous that Kawasaki do not supply 2 fobs and the emergency one, when you buy any new bike you normally get 3 keys do you not. I know its here somewhere, i saw it in a key bowl when moving house and thought that i should put all the bike keys in the car or else the movers will loose them, i have the other bike keys with the exception of the GTR FOB.
In the US it's normally two on cars and bikes especially ones with fobs. My bike came with two fobs. Gen 2s come with one fob and a credit card emergency backup. My truck came with two fobs and one key for the tailgate and glove box. I'm 60 and I can't recall getting more than two keys or fobs with any vehicle I've purchased. Is that different in the UK?

Possibly because when you stop riding the bike and turn off the ignition the Kipass won't be activated making the bike more susceptible to theft.
Nope, sorry still don'tget it.
All the system does is electronically allow the key to be moved:
K - Kawasaki
I - Intelligent
P - Proximity
A - Activation
S - Start
S - System
If it was an electronic immobiliser as well then surely the little fob wouldn't work.
Or am Imissing ssomething?
Interesting point, I have always assumed that some security functions would be impaired/disarmed if the main FOB is lost.
The owners manual states :-
"The spare fob has the immobiliser function, but it does not have the KIPASS function."
In a situation where the main FOB is lost the emergency FOB can be used by aligning the triangle on the spare with the projection of the ignition switch for about two seconds.
It seems that the 'cooker knob' cannot be removed if using the emergency key only....I'll have to check
Im used to getting 1 master key (normally red) and 2 standard keys, well i did with my ZZR and FJR, with cars it normally always 2 keys, i know bikes do vary 3 or 2.

The Yamaha Super Tenere has two 'normal' keys plus a red master
My car has two fobs

..... Simply carry the bike all around the house until the key switch operates, your fob will be close by. Hope that helps lol

:agree:
shaggs, you always come up with the most logical answers.. :mfr_lol:
:whistling: :mfr_lol:
Yep, that is the best thing to do or set the bike up outside and carry everything by it..

II've tried it and you can remove the key.
So basically no need for the fob.
I can recall from when I had my GTR that when completing the insurance schedule one of the questions was IS YOUR BIKE FITTED WITH AN IMMOBILISER/ALARM
If you clicked on YES it then opened up a drop down menu and one of the options was KIPASS.
This is why I have always been under the impression that the KIPASS was a security feature.

My insurance accept kipass as security measure
You are not disabling or removing the Immobiliser.
KIPASS is just an RF method of turning off the circuit.
So there should be no issues, or Kawasaki would still supply 2 remote fobs.
Just imaginethe sh1t Kawasaki would be in if you took them to task if you had an insurance claim refused becauseyou had mmisplaced your remotefob and was using the backup.
therefore the fob initiates the remote starting facility, whereas the emergency key has to be held against the headstock for a couple of seconds, so its about convenience then i.e its easier to be within radio signal range than it is to hold the emergency key against the headstock.
It begs the question what happened to the good old fashioned key in the ignition idea :mfr_lol:

It is until it works so well, even the rider cannot get the bike to work. :mfr_lol:
Thankfully none of these issues arise on my current steed, BMW obviously know how to look after their customers, we get two keys and two fobs. The fobs operate the alarm and central locking or alternatively you use the keys to start the bike in the traditional manner and the onboard computer automatically activates or deactivates the alarm and the central locking for everything is operated from a button on the bars.

but as most k16's are usually off the road being recalled not really relevant!!
:mfr_lol:
Took the plunge, replaced the FOB via Bournemouth Kawasaki, collected and programmed on Friday, £221.75 including programming, new key, £12.68, expensive mistake, i wonder how long it will be until i find the original???
It's probably in the same place as the (zzr1400) grab rail I recently lost  Kawasaki wanted £163 I bought one from fleabay of off an zzr1100 (same grab rail) for £14
Nice to know that you're sorted now :biker3:
Good to hear that your new fob has been sorted...peace of mind and all that ...I expect the 'lost' fob will now appear very shortly :mfr_lol:
Thanks all, im sure its hiding in plain site, i do know that its not lost just misplaced here somewhere!
whenever i misplace something at home Gill usually says "it'll be where YOU left it"
Not very helpful, but true :mfr_lol:
Tiz funny that OC .. my Snapdragon say exactly the same.
However on a more serious note it will be so gut wrenchingly sad to loose a GTR key fob and NOT be able to mount that glorious powerful well made ICBM...
On the upside if it was a WMB.. if you lost the ditch pump motorcycle and kept the fob you could be ecstatic  :tank:
