I've got a bit of an annoying problem. Whenever I put the bike bike into first gear from neutral it never seems to do it cleanly, there's always an annoying crunch.
Is there anything that can be done or " do they all do that sir "?
yep they all do that, some worse than others
Isn't that more a clunk? I can't say that I've ever heard a crunch, but a clunk, oh yes. All of my Kwackers bikes have done that.

And accompanied by a slight "lurch"
Yep that's it, clunk lurch. Thanks guys.
Have a play around with it.
Clutch in - pause - 1st gear. Possibly pause a bit longer before selecting gear.
Possible clutch drag, does it make a difference if you pull the clutch lever twice, possible air in clutch hydraulics.
Idle speed too high. Don't go too low on the idle or it will stall on a closed throttle in traffic.
It is satisfying it means you are ready to go! Wait till you hear a k 16. Now that is aclang all through the gears!

:agree: Pete hears every gear change when we ride out if I'm on the Old Barge :scooter:
I have to add here that not ALL K1600's have a noisy gearbox like Charlie appears to have!

just 99% of them. The other 1% are on recall for something!

kawasakis are all famous for their agriculture gearboxes, find it hard to believe that they have never seemed to solve this problem . They can make some of the finest engines in the world but gearboxes still from the 70's
some say that using high quality engine oil can lessen the clunking
Oil thread!

Fact is that the gearboxes on the 70s Triples That I've owned were probably less 'crunchy' than the GTR
Kawasaki have agricultural gearboxes? :mfr_lol:
Have you ever ridden a BMW or a Harley or Guzzi?
The problem with 1st gear engagement on Kawasaki and Suzukis is due to the primary gear ratio.
The clutch spins much faster than on Honda and Yamaha.
Hence the clunk when you engage first.
Above 1st the K & S gearboxes are better than most H & Y gearboxes.
Having recently ridden 2500 miles in the states on a Harley Davidson I can vouch for the fact that their gearboxes are awful. Getting neutral at traffic lights is vertually impossible. Crunches are the norm as are missed gears. It was a delight to get back on a gtr with its easy to use gearbox.
