As some of you may know I'm trying to perfect my 'skill's' & abilities in snapping some decent photos. So far it's either photos of the bike or the dogs that I use as models.....
I would appreciate some honest feedback as to what you all think of these.
I took the below photos a few weeks ago down in some local woods while the Bluebells were still flowering.
A happy Milo.

A low key photo of the mean and moody Milo!

Our Mac.

You wouldn't believe how difficult this shot was, both dogs sat still & looking in the same direction.

Absolute class in my opinion! And two well behaved mutts posing like that!
Love to know what you shoot with, and how, manual or auto focus, it's spot on with just enough diffusion through depth of field!
I'm trying to justify the expense getting an Olympus Pen F or OM D as always used OM SLR's in 35mm days, just keep using the phone for the majority of pics as convienience!
Top job in my opinion!
In fact.........The mutts' nuts!
I know nothing about photography. Used to have an instamatic 25! But I think these photos are outstanding. This could be an alternative career for you.
Once more excellent pictures in my opinion.
I wish I had the skill and know how.
Just don't have the patience to play and learn :mfr_lol:
My son in law is a videographer wit is own business and e Jo looked anthem and he always uses exa lights everywhere, even on a camera he uses a flas jus to fall in the dark bits, on pic 1 the left side of the face is darker than the right so a fill in would be good.
I know nothing Andre look good to me.
Alan
have you been on the vino Al ? :mfr_lol:
Steve, you know what I think as I've told you before that you have a natural ability in the world of photography.
There is a big difference in photographing a bike and photographing dogs, the dogs being much more difficult I think.
Either way your photographs are great.
Let me ask you a question. ......which do you prefer taking pictures of ?
Thanks for all the comments.
I've put Big Al's comments in Google Translate and I think Google just crashed! :mfr_lol:
Roger, each has its own challenges. It's good to capture the spirit of a dog and get a striking image but then I've taken some pretty decent shots of bikes recently, I've even sold a couple which was a boost.
If anyone knows anyone with some sports bikes I'd love to shoot them.
Was trying to type on an iPad wit a little prong thing while watching the Grand Prix, obviously crap at typing while not looking but I know what I meant.
Fill in flash is needed, a told extra lights always helpful.
Alan
Steve, other than your obvious fault for owning a BMW, I do think you take marvelous photographs.

Keep taking the pictures Steve
Wolfie, I actually think you could actually make a career of this (or a well paid hobby). You've certainly got a talent for it.
Jim, if I could make a few extra £'s that would suit me just fine. I ain't greedy!

Love to know what you shoot with, and how, manual or auto focus, it's spot on with just enough diffusion through depth of field!
I'm using a Sony A7r2 mirrorless, full frame camera which has an electronic viewfinder, which basically means that what you see in the viewfinder or screen is what you will get. So as you change the aperture or shutter speed on the camera, you see the changes taking place in real time on the screen. No test shots required to get the desired exposure.
I shoot in RAW rather than JPEG which gives me total control of the images, as opposed to the limited editing ability of shooting in JPEG. The camera shoots at a staggering 43MP!
The above images are significantly compressed for uploading to the forum, the actual files are razor sharp and the prints are even better.
I then edit the RAW images in Lightroom which is a professional editing package and occasionally use Photoshop before exporting the final edited photo as a JPEG.
These shots were taken with a prime 55mm Carl Ziess f1.8 lens which in itself is an outstanding piece of equipment.
I always shoot in manual mode but do use autofocus 99.9% of the time unless I have a really tricky subject in very poor light that the camera struggles to focus on.
The above photos were shot with natural light and then I used a white reflector to bounce some light back at the dogs. Black dogs are particularly difficult to photograph because black just absorbs light.
I have a couple of Rotologhts which are constant video lights and I will use those occasionally and I prefer those over flash as you have greater control of them.
So there you go, a lot of work goes into the photos, but well worth the effort
I love your pics Steve, and in fact, I've already borrowed a few and used them as the background on my desktop PC. The watermill one and the waterfall.. :mfr_lol:
You should watermark everyone with your copyright Steve, then if anyone sees them, they would know they are yours and may contact you for more

A very good friend of mine and a riding pal of some years back. Started off like you... And horror upon horrors....rides a BMW. I haven't seen him much over the past years as we've drifted apart but I do consider him my brother and miss riding with him.

Debs, all my photos have my copyright embedded into them in the data. I have software that allows me to track any of my photos anywhere in the world if they are posted online. Any photos that I sell have a Copyright Logo on them.
Excellent shots Wolfie.Spaniels make great subjects.Get ya self on flickr some good tips and examples on there.
If you fancy a look at some of mine https://www.flickr.com/people/trevkerr/
I shot with a old Nikon D7000 bitold hat now but with decent glass infront of it you can get some good results.
To do it for living would be great.
Wow that wave looks like a polar bear.... or do I need to lie down in a dark room for a bit

Haha it does a bit few years ago a storm came up the channel and battered Dover and me trying to record it !

Serious weaponry in your arsenal sir! :gunsmilie:
Just googled it, what a piece of kit that body is, and quality optics up front - stunning.
Still needs a good eye and and forethought to frame and make a good picture - you certainly have it!
Respect!
Trev, I'm struggling to open your flicker tab on the iPad for some reason. I do however like the liver and white Springer shot though. I've always wanted a liver and white springer. I used to have a Nikon D7000 and I have to say it served me very well for a good few years. I only had the kit lens with it as that's all I could afford at the time.
Your landscape shot with the waves crashing does actually look like a polar bear.....naturally that's what you were looking for in the shot isn't it? :whistling:

I use to be well into photography and still have my old Nikon S301 (I think it is). It's an ancient 35mm film camera, an old relic woth nothin really but I can't bring myself to just throw it in a skip.

Funny you should say that .....I still have my late fathers Yashica J5 35mm camera, and I can't bring myself to part with it even though its never used these days
Hi Wolfie
The Polar bear wave was a fluke, the wind was howling, the ferries had stopped coming out of Dover and I could just about stand up.
Try this link https://www.flickr.com/photos/trevkerr/
Think if I could get a lid springer size n shape she would be on the bike with me !
I have my father's Voigtlander which I still use on occasion.
I know some people (myself included) like B & W so I popped down into Leeds this afternoon and took this. I think it came out ok, but not the finished style I was initially looking for.

Really goo Steve.
Excellent shot Wolf.I agree B&W adds to the atmosphere. Here's one of my favs,I took this at Dungeness Lighthouse in Kent a few years back.
Excellent to the both of you!

Very nice indeed. Did you take that with an infrared filter?

No just a UV filter and on a tripod as exposure was long to capture cloud movement.
All this activity about photography has really rekindled my interest in photography. I used to be very keen back in the late 60s early 70s since then I've always had a happy snappy type camera.
Last month I upgraded to a more up to date Nikon, which I intend to use much more often.
So keep posting your superb pictures guys its just the right inspiration for me .... thanks guys
Will do, beauty of digital is it's cheap to shoot and then bin off the duff ones!

The days of Bonus print and a free film are well gone !
so true, we used to develop our own film and reload our own cartridges, digital is just sooooo much better
Better? More convenient certainly, but I miss the challenge of having a number of chances to get a good pic framed and taken, the skill effort and thought that went into each shot, the craft in the darkroom compensating or dodging up a print to get "the one". Loved b&w work, Ilford hp5 film and Patterson Chemicals! Yes if you put the effort in like Wolf it certainly shows, but for most of us it's click, look and delete!
Sorry - off on a jumpers for goalposts moment!
Heard somewhere a factoid of how many digital pics were taken each day, can't recall the number but staggering!

:mfr_lol: "jumpers for goalposts" those were the days, the trick was to make sure your jumper wasn't in the mud otherwise there would trouble when you got home :mfr_lol:
I do take your point though, but I think that for this old duffer digital is the way to go, if I started adapting a bedroom into a dark room then there would be REAL BIG trouble here :mfr_lol:
Its many years since my film and dark room days and even then I wasn't very competent, it was my mate Bob who was more proficient of the two of us, the dark room was at his grandma's house
You know, my father took some wonderful pictures with that Voigtlander. Here's a link to his Flickr pics (35mm)..

An additional bonus for Charlie747..there's aircraft involved of course.
Hi
I haven't read through all the comments and its taken me this long to comment... I hate criticism and it is so easy to do, harder to be constructive.
My main comment would be framing and composition.... although the pictures are in focus with a nice depth of field, my advise would be too concentrate on the framing and composition, perhaps go a little more extreme. Some of the photos could have more impact by creating a dynamic story within the photo, if the dogs are looking across the photo, include more space in the direction they are looking. basically your trying to get the viewers eye to track across the photo and not just in the centre. I accept, you are achieving this to a certain extent, but you could either a) think about it before you press the shutter release or b) present and cut the picture in a certain way before posting, but sometimes less is more and more is less - depending on the picture.
for example. if your photograph is of a racing car, your either looking to where the car is going, or if its a very fast car, you may wish to convey the speed where the car is almost off the page - or the car or back ground is out of focus. I'm sure your aware and know this. another trick is thirds, which you are more or less achieving with the Spaniel, but IMO, its not quite there. Your camera will have a setting where you can place a grid within the view finder to align everything perfectly.
Anyway - I know nothing, please feel free to disregard as you see fit. nice photos.
Neil
Neil, I would have preferred the Springer to have been looking into the photo rather than out of it as you suggested but he just struck the pose and I snapped.
You wouldn't believe how lucky I was to get what I got. :mfr_lol:
Our Lab KIte, (that we lost in February) simply would not co-operate when it came to having her picture taken, it was a constant battle to get her to look in the direction of the camera
A couple more photos which I took this evening down at Rodley canal near Leeds.
The first one I've tried to make it look a bit like an oil painting....handheld at 1/13th of a second at f4
(http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s139/Jaffa_Cake101/Miscellaneous/DSC00710_zpsy3vt34bz.jpg)
The second one I was just experimenting with very low light. A tripod would have been useful. Handheld at 1/5th of a second at f1.8 hence it isn't as sharp as it could be but I still like the outcome.
