Title: Tomtom 400 rider, The good the bad and the ugly.
Post by: mark1400 on May 29, 2016, 03:46:02 PM
Just got back from a 1500 mile trip around Scotland using my tom-tom 400 rider sat nav and I thought I would pass on a few of my thoughts to you so I will get straight to the points.

the good;  It only missed two speed cameras on the whole trip so I think that was pretty good.
during the average speed camera sections it shows your average speed and the distance to the next camera  so if you have been going slow  you can speed it up a bit and still  have the correct average speed.

the bad and the ugly (I thought I would put these two together  as it was extremely bad and bloody ugly);

heading up to York there was torrential rain, not a big deal if you know where you are.....but if you don't have a clue where you are or which direction to take and visibility is extremely low and there is a lot of traffic around you it can be hard going.

when rain hits the tom-tom 400 rider screen the screen reacts as though it is being pressed. as water drips down the screen  the screen is constantly reacting  as though it is being pressed multiple times  all over the place.
Maps gets changed, settings get pressed and altered in a totally random fashion and as you try to recall your map the screen is still reacting to the rain  and trying to alter everything at random.

"I couldn't believe it"  is an understatement, I had a search online  and there seems to be a lot of people complaining about this....  People have contacted tom-tom and been sent replacement units that behave in exactly the same manner. From what I have seen  online  tom-tom have admitted  they are sending out replacement units that are exactly the same as the old units and will react in exactly the same way.

People have asked for a software update  so they can lock the screen  on the current map if they wish to...  Sounds like a dam good idea to me.

I ended up having to remove  the glass screen protector from my mobile phone and place it over the tom-tom  which has raised edges on the tom-tom casing, I then had to wrap  insulating tape around it and around the tom-tom....  That got me to my destination but it was no fun trying to sort it out in torrential rain.

Had I known how it reacts to the rain  I would have seriously considered  a different make  of Satnav, never in my wildest dreams did I think a bit of rain would affect a motorcycle satnav  and make it  unusable.

I would be interested to hear your thoughts
cheers.

That doesn't sound good about the rain and screen Mark. One of the reasons that they charge extortionate amounts for a bike sat nav is for its usability in all weathers. Think I'd be sending it back mate.

Never read any of that when I did my research on the 400 ,good job I chose the garmin 390 ,as I seem to attract rain when I go on trips ,

I never read anything about it either & i did lots of research, utube, google, bike forums and the usual stuff. It was only when i searched the exact problem and it took some searching did I find any information about it.

it's just ridiculous really, I'm going to try flicking some water at it to recreate the problem and video it ...  Then I will put it online  everywhere I can.

cheers

I have the TomTom app on my phone. Works perfectly until it rains heavy, then it goes in to psycho mode.  :hammer:

thats a crazy way for a moern bike specific sat nav to behave, years ago I had a TT rider and it never showed any of those faults

I have a Garmin 590LM now and it doesn't react any different in wet weather, in fact it still continues to  take you on strange routes regardless af the weather    :mfr_lol:  it does get you there though

a very quick video  that shows the problem, I only  let it affect the screen once as I didn't want all my settings to get changed but I'm sure you can understand what will happen in heavy rain and at speed.

Bloody hell that's  :censored:   :shit:

EDIT:  just thinking ........that's "not fit for purpose"

That is shocking - never seen anything like that and never heard anything like that from my bike club or the other forums I belong too. As OC says, that is NOT fit for purpose.

I know its no help, but I have had two Garmins and they behave perfectly in bad weather. Yes as others have said.... sometimes strange routing options, but a least you can use them when its peeing down.

It would be interesting if others who have the 400 rider try the test...just dip your hand in a container of water & flick it at the screen, do it a few times & see what happends.

cheers.

Hi Mark.
Sorry how :shit: you TT is I looked at the links you posted and can't believe some suggestions on there altering the angle putting a bag/cling film over it  :censored:.
It's not fit for purpose full stop as someone said an update to lock the screen could solve the issue .
Then pull over to unlock and reprogram the route easy peasy and safely.

I have just read a report in MSL about the 400 and its successor the 410, seems that only the early 400s suffered from rain issues and the affected ones have been replaced by TT

If there's anyone here with this problem on their 400 maybe tgeres an opportunity to get it replaced under warranty

Just a thought

You can't beat a Garmin device. I have a BMW branded Garmin 660 up for sale if anyone is interested. Free lifetime map updates and in excellent condition. Full EU mapping.

Also if you use it and it rains it stays on the map page!

Chap Chaps Chaps .. and Debs of course.
I am sorry to hear of the Tom Tom problems and it won't help you, well it may do if you decide to buy another make, but why oh why did you not buy a Garmin ? TT sites are littered with problems and I'm not saying that any Garmins out there have never been sent back but in todays world you very much get what you pay for. Sat Nav, textile bike gear, boots, gloves, helmet cams ... of course your £200 new "waterproof" jacket is going to leak when it rains and I am well aware that not everyone can afford expensive kit but buy the best you can because in the long run it will save you time money and stress.
I do NOT want this to come over as " I told you so " in anyway its simply an point of view and I hope you don't mind me airing it.

The report I read indicated that the 'rain problem' with the TT 400 was limited to a small number of units in the initial production run.

I believe that a later TT 410 unit has recently been released.

Furthermore TT will surely sort out problem units under the terms of their warranty

I had  a TT Rider about 8 years ago and it was ok, albeit it would be somewhat dated in todays market

I don't understand how the faulty TT units ever reached the consumer  don't they test these units under the conditions they are going to be used in, you know, motorbike - no roof -  UK - rain?
