Hello People!! in GTR Land
I was at a friends the other day who has the 2008 GTR and he was saying he'd like a newer version for various reasons.. one of which was that you can set the screen to automatically raise at a desired speed !! now this would be brilliant !!
is this true and anyone done this?? or is it an old wives tale
cheers
Stoli
Old wives tale I think
The stereo volume in my car goes up and down with the speed if that helps. :mfr_lol:
But I don't know much about tumble dryers.
my stereo does too.. quite what that has to do with my screen I'm a tad lost.. :whistling:
i thought it was just folklore but the guy i was talking to said he'd seen a vid on youtube !!
ahh well.. would be nice tho....
Not true, however on a previous GTR I owned it was possible to pre-set the screen to raise to a position when turning on the ignition, I dont think it is possible with the current latest model, interestingly the original GTRs had a warning sticker on the screen advising against adjusting whilst on the move
i jumped on this as i'd love mine to auto raise at say 60mph. the noise and wind and stuff on a GTR is (in my opinion) one of the worst i have experienced on any bike ive owned. its simply awful and i was near on selling the thing. (queue the stalwarts defending the GTR...)
only in fully up mode does the screen offer anything like the reduced noise and wind blast it should
any before anyone starts hammering me with grief... I'm on my 4th different screen and 1 new Lid trying to reduce it!
honestly, i nearly sold the damn thing and went back to my GSX14 for touring

Sorry, it doesn't raise the screen as the speed increases. What screens have you tried?
that's a shame.. and i better tell the other guy who thinks it does before he buys a new model thinking it does !!!
ive tried....
The Standard one - utterly useless and gave me raging headaches. i even bought a new helmet thinking it was the shape of my Lid !! never for one minute thought a purpose built touring bike would have such a rubbish screen - let alone an updated model of the bike !
Then bought an MRA Screen with flippy up bit. Only when i got it home and offered it up to the Std one did i see it was actually smaller! didn't hold out much hope and yep - for me useless
Then a standard screen with Laminar Lip - this was better when extended and was happy but - for me it was wobbling/moving about a bit at cruise speeds. i did like it and it did the job but put off was the constant wobble and the two pieces of plastic were not the best to look throu and gave a distorted view
Then a Calsci XL - have this on now and while on lowest setting its useless at anything over 50/60, when its up its very good. doesn't suffer from wobble. just looks like a ships sail!! but it does the job
(hence my 2 screens for sale in The Market)
I'm supposed to be going to the Catalan GP next week (subject to being able to buy fuel in France) - i very nearly decided to take my GSX14 as to be honest i don't get the wind/noise form that anywhere near like the GTR. as i say i nearly sold the damn thing as i bought it specifically for touring and for me its not as good as my GSX14. I know its all down to preference and stuff so please.. before i get mobbed with "its the best bike for touring".... it isn't. its noisy, loud, the foot pegs are too high for the rider (even with short-arse legs like mine) and the passenger pegs are a joke... oh and its a tad snatch off/on throttle
apart form that I'm happy !!!!
Did you test ride your GTR before purchasing it ? I would have expected these issues to have been apparent during a proper test ride
I do agree with you that the standard screen, even the one fitted on the latest model, is not great and is somewhat noisy, but I don't mind some noise, I am on a motorbike after all, I have just fitted a Laminar Lip and will have to see how it performs on my bike.
I'm sorry your bike doesn't meet your expectations, and no, I'm not going to have a 'go' at you or even suggest that you change for a K1600  :mfr_lol:
I do hope that you get something sorted to your satisfaction before your trip
you might find with the Lip on, when its fully extended that at 80+it wobbles a bit and obstructs vision a bit. i found it a tad off-putting but these things are all down to personal stuff. what suits me may be opposite for another...
as above i have the Calsci XL and when up its fine
I'm not saying it doesn't meet my expectations and please don't think I'm all down on it.. there has to be the ability to highlight issues and thoughts on personal views on here as NO bike is perfect. ive been riding for 35+ years so have some experience to draw from. all I'm hinting is that for a dedicated purpose built tourer - attention to detail like pillion pegs being made of Ally and no rubbers, being far far too high and even in my opinion the rider pegs are too high by 2cm or so.... plus the absolute uselessness of the Std screen youd have thought these would have been better on a bike of this type.
ive had to spend a lot of money on it getting these things ironed out
now i have lower rear pegs, with rubbers and the Calsci its more of a bike i WANT to use. before i wanted to use my GSX14 instead.
Having a test ride is no experience than riding it all day. Most things don't show up until you ride it a bit.
My advice before you buy anything else (screens) is to meet up with Kwacker group and exchange screens. Everything affects how a screen works for you such as your lean angle on the bike, different bars, helmet, and your torso height just to name a few.
Personally I've settled on a CB Ultra Tour Dome for most riding. I still go back to the shorty stock 08 screen depending on the heat and weather conditions.
Oh, I also use ear plugs so the noise doesn't bother me as much.
My latest model has rubber covers on the pillion pegs as standard ....just saying
only taken how many years to add that !!!!
don't get me wrong here.. its a great bike and this thread has got way way off topic but, as with all bikes they have shortcomings. the trouble is.... the things that should be there on Bikes as they are designed for a specific job are often woefully under spec or just not right for the job they are to be used for.
why have Ally only pegs and high up ones at that? it just doesn't make sense. and the test riders in the design and build stage must have had raging wind noise when they rode it screen down !!
unless they were very short in body and legs!!
Well, think about that.. Where do these bikes come from and where are they designed? Smaller stature on average I would say as compared to us.
Stoli raises some very valid points there. I'm always amazed at how much has to be altered
Regardless of manufacturer to make bike fit for purpose. Imagine cars with one seat suits all or you had to change the windshield. Pillions often are not catered for properly- too high pegs, uncomfortable seats. We need to get the manufacturers to change or they will carry on doing it.
YAY!! someone agrees!! thank you ..
the things that do need attention are really quite no-brainer things. Peg height ... on a tourer ! why would a pillion want their knees by their ears, and hard Ally too. just a small bit of spirited riding and a quick nail it in 2nd saw my wifes feet off the pegs. and shes a seasoned biker/pillion with 30 years on a bike. she said they were small, slippy and way too high
Screen, something that at least offers wind protection to some degree when its down. Up it looks like a sheet on a washing line and ruins the looks of the bike.
and one ive never been able to fathom, why remove the cubby hole that was on the tank on 2007/8/9 !!!!! and what numpty thought "i know , lets just put a bit of cheap plastic there that serves no purpose whatsoever!! That's an Improvement!! where do i put my Fob? (no suggestions please!) and why oh why oh why isn't there a box / cubby hole on the right fairing panel !
ah well... there are tons of positives too... i know i seem down on it.. supposed I'm just pissed off as I'm supposed to be going to Barcelona for the GP and setting off Thursday but with the French cracking off... I'm not sure i wil be able to get fuel
It always struck me as strange that for a bike with such potential that the majority of us have had to modify to make it right for us !
Yep lowered rear foot pegs with FJ pegs Gel seat etc etc.........
My thoughts are with you ref the screen. I tend to ride with my visor 3/4 open (it's a fresh air thing) and have experienced blurred vision while reading motorway road signs due to the vibration fron airflow buffeting off the screen. For a bike that is design in a wind tunnel its a major flaw.
If you find the screen answer please let us all into the secret :punk:
maybe there isn't a one off answer that suits us all Charlie, we all differ in size and the way we sit on a bike, plus some riders prefer to ride in a near silent bubble, I'm not one of them

I've found when making progress that I trim the airflow to hit the top of my shoulders and give my head a chance of stability.
I admit disappointment that I imagined I would sit in a serine bubble of tranquility as I found years ago on an ST1100 but have accepted the GTR as a pratical Soft tuned ZZR with all day potential.
I would say that the lower fairing is far better than the K16 for me
But I do empherthise with Stolichnaya regarding wind noise and buffeting of the head. I just hope he finds a solution after investing time and money that if not perfect is a compromise he can live with
Morning guys
I have found a solution as said. Well of sorts
The Calsci XL is excellent when fully up. By far the best of the 4 I've tried and I wouldn't want anything bigger for fear of it looking rediculous. My beef is that even after all this when its down (and any screen I've tried in the down position) is utterly rubbish past 50.
It's not a silent bubble I'm after. If I were I'd not be riding bikes! My experience of the GTR before the XL was a contingency of ibuprofen upon getting home. The wind noise in my lid with this particular bike was awful. I went as far as buying a different lid and trying all 3 I have.
A touring bike should be a pleasurable place to be. And in the main it is. The noise and head shaking due to buffeting was poor.
I may even try and see if I can fit the Laminar Lip to the Calsci!!
My Gtr is great. I can fully see its merits and really do like it... Apart from this one pain in the bum issue which is resolved in the main. I have a solution! But I don't like riding with the screen up all the time. It's s trade off.
What's odd for me is that I don't get the same issue on my Gsx14 with no fairing
.
All I can assume is that with your monster muscle bike your head is hitting a clean airflow that enables it to make a cleaner quiter passage than when it meets the turbulence from the screen on the GTR.
I always remember the hype ref ZZR1100 being designed in a wind tunnel. It's a pity that they did not design a better airflow management for the GTR upper fairing on the all day missile
What helmet have you gone from too ?
I've had an HJC RPHA-10 for years. It's a brilliant Lid. Comfy, quiet and just right for me. It's old tho so after 2 hours in a shop trying lots of helmets I went for a Scorpion Exo 510 Air
It's in the cheaper range than I'd usually buy but it's turning out to be a good lid. Lots of nice touches and spec but the drawback is the side vision isn't the best. It's a bit letterbox if you know what I mean.
But it does have pre cut holes for speakers. Drop down dark visor/shades. Pinlock as std. Lots of vents that do work. It's comfy and also an ingenious pump up method to make it snug.

I was experimenting today with my setup. If I bend my head downward it gets really quiet. Unfortunately, I can't see the road so I'll stick with the noise and use earplugs.

Have we all got it wrong and we need to fit lower bars not risers ?
The short screen on the K16 is about the same as the GTR for noise and turbulence

:agree: :mfr_lol:
I've got the adjustable ones so I can adjust them. I'll have to see how that goes. I've got the original screen, which is quite short and does flow air but I'm thinking the helmet has more to do with this than the screen itself. I have a Scorpion 1100, I think.
My pennies worth regarding this, I've got a Schuberth C3 pro flip front helmet and a Cee Baileys screen fitted, I always ride with ear plugs. I enjoy riding the bike with the screen fully down, but on longer trips, i.e. motorway runs, I raise it just enough to see over the top, I find it quiet, not whisper quiet 'cause I'm on a motorbike doing, ahem, 70MPH :whistling: but quiet enough to listen to music, directions or pillion on the sat nag. Fully up, it is whisper quiet and I can lift the flip and talk to my pillion if need be, so I guess I'm happy.
I have had two Blackbird's and the search for the correct screen on that was like looking for the holy grail.
My gtr, 2009, has an auto adjusting screen. When I decide the height needs to change my thumb automaticaly moves the switch lol

The 2015 model has rubberised pillion pegs, quite why it took so long to do this is another question. Still same height though.
The 2015 screen with the adjustable vent is better at reducing noise, but as there is less turbulence around your head, you are more prone to buffeting from side winds. Also, I need to close the vent when it's raining so that the turbulence can clear rain off the visor. In short, you win some, you lose some.

Agreed, I have just added a Laminar Lip to the 'vented' screen on y 2015 bike, the combination seems to work well, it was put to the test over the last 36 hours with a round trip ride to the Meeting in Gloucester when I spent plenty time on the motorway with the vent open and the screen fully extended..................I'm pleased with the Laminar Lip
My 08 does that as well!
