I had more issues in half the time with the GTR, such as bike cutting out at low speeds, poor paint quality virtually everywhere, the shock adjuster, (well there's no secret there) a few other issues too but I can't remember all the details.
HELP!!!! :help:
Following The Wolf's comment in another thread, think I've come across the symptom that occasionally hits me!
Low speed manoeuvres - yes - at the worst possible time - the bike just stalls! :asshole: :asshole: :censored:
Never lost it yet, but concerning?
Anyone else suffered this? - mines a Mk1 2008 vintage
Common problem - any explanation?
Any known cure? (apart form the K16! upgrade) :undecided:
Idle is too low.
Start bike let it warm up for at least 5 mins.
Now set the idle to 1200rpm.
No more stalling.

took the words outa my mouth
A change of plugs helps as well.
All of our Blood bikes do it if you don't allow them to warm up properly. No issue once warm
When I first bought mine (privately, 2nd hand) it would also stall at the most inconvenient moment. Both Boomer & PRD are spot on.
Increase in idle speed stopped it stalling when stopping at a set of lights, and a new set of plugs cured the "flat-spot" that would occasionally cause it to stall when pulling away at low(ish) RPM.
Cheers
Paul B.
Thanks all, can't always say it's at cold / warming up, but I know my idles set about 1100, so I'll up that a bit.
Any preference on plugs out there?
Bosch / NGK / Denso?
Is it worth going the iridium route?
Also make sure that the throttle cables have some free play in them.
If only it had been that simple. My idle speed was fine, the bike could stall whether the engine was cold or warm, it was a low mileage bike so the plugs should have been fine. Bike was serviced by Kawasaki dealer. This was on my2011 bike, I never had a problem with my 07 GTR.
Solution for me was sell it and buy something more reliable!

Don't say that to me, starting to get tempted! test rode a K16 some years ago, felt "remote" from it, matured a bit since then tho!
Dunno about your night shift Wolf - mine's been a killer, 07:00 seems sooo far away! :sleep1:
Not sure what you do for a living but my shift has been OK everything considered. Looking forward now to a lovely four days off starting with some :sleep1:

Telecomms is the career, last night was an extra on the end of my normal nights covering colleague off sick, shouldn't offer to help,it always bites back!
2 days, 2 nights, 4 off, well 3 this week! Gotta get some miles in while it's good! And perhaps test ride a K16 again at Benhams! :scooter:
A further test ride eh? You know deep down that makes sense! :whistling:
Well he can certainly afford it with all those extra hours
Changing the plugs is a cheaper option than buying a Bavarian money waster. You are not ready for the lederhosen route yet. You want to enjoy life!

Still love me GTR, really is the best all-rounder we've had, second place goes to the GS1200.
K16 - dunno - the one I rode before was good, great engineering - but "clinical" - like a BM car, does it very well but ....................
Have to try it again, as with a multi-strada, whether I'd have one............. :undecided:.......never say never!
Before Jen had her MX-5 we tried a Z3, same there, think the Jap's somehow capture a bit of "soul" and bludgeon it in during production! :hammer:
My GTR would occasionally cut out when gear changing, always up the box and between third and fourth. This happened a good few times, usually after ten miles or so of riding and was a dead - cut, as if the ignition had been switched off. The first indication was usually the oil pressure light coming on before letting the clutch out for the next gear.
I suspected the side stand switch, but this was never proven.
It sounds like the GTR can be a bit dangerous with it cutting out on so many machines
Snow0, BMW, Clinical, like a BMW car.....funny you should say that as I used that exact analogy very recently when describing how it rode to Charlie. Lovely ride, but does virtually everything for you and can become almost boring.

OMG - so I'm at danger living on the edge of adrenelin with the GTR possibly cutting out............... :devil2:
Or......falling to sleep through boredom and tedium on a K16! ........................................ :sleep1:
Possibly time to try a Triumph again, new / revised Tiger 1050 out yet? My old 2007 one was third fave after the GS!........or try a rocket 3..........TORQUE MONSTER!
I do like the Rocket 3, but I have a feeling my neighbours wouldn't at 2am after a late shift! :mfr_lol:

hmmm - sounds like the big triple needs to be tried! :biker3:
There was a rumour a while back that the wolf had a rocket 3. I think it would suit him.
It's not normal for these bikes to cut out, especially if the hot idle is about 1200. Something else is going on. Mine has never done that. Could be plugs but I doubt it. I didn't change mine until about 50000 miles.

I'm with you there Jim, plugs either work or fail as far as my experience goes.
one thing I never considered that was proven with my old XTZ750, mobile phone / radio, signal, sure that one cut out caused by RF signals when the phone was scanned, doesn't happen regularly enough to verify though, but always on tickover / stopped at lights etc.

What's all this fear mongering about GTRs cutting out, non of mine have ever cut out in any circumstances, for goodness sake :nono:

Not even when you've dropped them? :whistling:
It is scaremongering from the dark side. Just jealous because we have so few problems compared to them.
Sorry it's taken me a while to respond to the (latest reckless) comment by PRD I was just outside admiring the German design and beauty of the K16 before it ventures on an effortless 400 plus mile ride tomorrow.....just because it can.
They'll be no need for the fitted as standard heated seats or grips as it's quite warm in the deprived North of the U.K. although I may well use the fitted as standard cruise control to ease the journey and still allow me to give lesser bikes The Bird as I pass them whilst contemplating dynamic or standard mode for the engine management unit while all six cylinders effortlessly pump away to get me safely to and from my destination with no fatigue.
I'll have my camera gear with me of course which will all be stashed away in the ample sized panniers fitted as standard with central locking and backed up with a factory fitted BMW Thatcham approved alarm with sensitivity monitors.
Life can be sweet for BMW owners. :gunsmilie:
It's admirable that you can appreciate all of those cutting edge features whilst looking at the bike through the rear window of the recovery wagon :gun_bandana:
I do like Mr Wolf's reply. Very amusing but he does emphasise how much extra there is to go wrong on the K16.
Not to mention the mortgage needed to buy one :hammer:
:mfr_lol: :mfr_lol: :mfr_lol: :mfr_lol: :mfr_lol:
And isn't Mr Wolf's bike on its second engine?
Any how .....sorry to interrupt the flow.....but.......
After leaving Birmingham yesterday, sat in a queue on the A38, did it again, just the once, no warnings / misfires, just stalled on warm tick-over, clutch in!
So apart from tickover and plugs which may help, no-one's actually found out why?
Snow0, the reason why it keeps cutting out is because it's a Kawasaki.
PRD no I am not on my second engine!
Boomer used K16's are probably cheaper than the equivalent year GTR.
I'm just on a wee ride out but all should be well as I have a support vehicle travelling with me just in case, my mates following me in his RAC van.
Sorry Mr Wolf that is what I was told. So BMW's depreciate more than Kawasakis I did not know that.
:mfr_lol: This just gets better and better!
But it also means that an awful lot of machine can be bought for the money!
I really don't want to change, but need to ride one again and evaluate, biggest thing I think I'd miss would be the "Cheshire cat" grin the GTR provides! :)
All this talk about BMW and Kawasaki motorcycles makes me think about what started it all and just how much better Kawasaki were at making bikes even back in the 70s than BMW were

My God, OC... If that was taken back in the 70's, how old are you now! :mfr_lol:

Lovely bike. Come to the meeting on that.
sadly I sold the bike so no longer own it

You wouldn't believe what a dealer offered me for mine, it was a joke. :gun_bandana:
I had a private buyer view mine and he offered me almost £3k more than what the dealer did.
Does not surprise me. You are better off hanging on to t despite its make!
Dealers don't seem to want their BMW bikes back, unless its at their low values, The K1300 GT I owned suffered in the same way :hammer:
Dealers offered me stupid money for my RT until one was up for a sensible deal and I got what I wanted. He wins because I would be more inclined to go back again. They just have such big overheads that if they cant make at least £1500 to £2000 profit on each bike they wont deal. :asshole: :asshole:
H2c Kawasaki...lovely bike and great photo's.

But if I did that, what would I advertise it as....a BMW or a Kawasaki? I wouldn't want to get done by the bike advertisement Police :mfr_lol:
I do get a few 'nice BMW' comments but I politely tell them 'it's a fn Kawasaki you moron!'. They usually turn red and walk away after that. Strangely I don't make many friends on the road. Never could understand that.
Replace the BMW roundels with the KMW ones?  :innocent:
