Title: Rear Diff oil leak.
Post by: Simmo on May 19, 2016, 12:27:43 PM
 Hi guys help needed.
Took bike for Mot Monday passed all well. Or so I thought, when I arrived home noticed oil dripping from diff where the rubber boot on shaft housing joins rear Diff. Had a look on the kawa parts diagram and there appears to be an o ring on the shaft where it goes into the diff and an oil seal in the diff itself. Thought I would drop the Diff and change the seal and o ring. My problem is that when all the bolts are removed to remove the Diff from the bike it wont budge off the shaft it's solid shaft turns in diff fine and there was no knocking noises from it.. Anybody else had this problem.
Am I missing something that's still holding the shaft in the Diff. Don't want to start giving it some wellie with the rubber hammer just yet. Cant see anything on the parts diagram that would suggest I've missed something.
Off to the TT in June so need to get this sorted.

I think that you may have to remove the rear wheel first to gain access to the shaft (it has an o-ring) on the rear drive side.  I don't see how you can do anything to it without doing that first.

There's a pin on the transmission side that has to be released in order for the drive shaft to be removed.  I just did this so let's see if my memory still works...   I had the rear wheel off for a new tire..   Ok, first you need to remove the shift linkage assembly, then the big plate it attaches to.  Remove the black plastic cover on the shaft (one screw).  Remove the metal band on the frontward boot.  Push the frontward boot rearward to allow access to where it attaches to the transmission (oh, you may want to kick it in neutral before you remove the linkage) so that you can find the pin.  The frontward part of the drive shaft has a small hole in it so that you can push something small into it to release the pin.  The pin is spring loaded so be careful when you pull the drive shaft out and disappears (don't ask me how I know this).  Also, I don't disconnect the rear drive totally from the swing arm bolts.  I just remove the top bolt and let the rear drive tilt down.  The drive shaft has a wacking great spring on the rear drive side so be careful about that as well.  Once I'm done with the drive shaft I put it back in and then using a small automotive jack, raise the rear drive and attach the bolt to the swing arm.  I grease the splines with Honda moly grease every time I change the rear tire.  Also lube the rear drive splines where it meets the rear wheel.

Hi. thanx for the info.

I think you may have not understood what I was asking or I didn't explain the problem properly.
The rear wheel is off .When i removed the top bolt from the torsion arm the diff should be able to swing down of the shaft at the rear. That's my understanding. The problem I have is that the diff will not do this it won't swing down because it's stuck on the shaft.
Doe's it need some gentle help with the old rubber hammer to release if from the shaft or is it held on the shaft by some other means.
Once I have it off I can change the o ring oil seal that located between the rear shaft splines and the u/j coupling. I fully intend to remove it from both ends and grease everything up.
I've had the bike since 2013, the bike is a 2010 model with 18,000 miles on it. It would appear that the shaft splines have never been greased since the bike was built. I've never done it and I don't think the main dealer has when its been serviced.

If I remember correct and I might be wrong here but when I removed my diff to clean the shaft and grease it I seem to remember a ball bearing needed to be pressed in to release it? Be careful if I am right because you will drop it and it will roll away,.

Thinking about it that might be at the front of the shaft, he'll my memory gets worse day by day.

I do remember the diff being heavy when I dropped it down though.

Good luck.

The diff should fall away with the tension of the spring inside.maybe you, could remount the wheel and rock it to get it to move.Could also be the lower mounting bearing holding it. Failing that can you remove the diff with the shaft still connected so you can have a better look.

When I did mine, the rear drive did not want to disengage from the drive shaft either.  I think I just persuaded it...more force.   There isn't anything holding it in on the rear drive side.  It could be the spring hanging it up.  Support the drive and wriggle the spring back towards the drive shaft.  You don't want the rear drive crashing down into the floor with full force.

Thanx for the advice.

Sadly it wasn't a simple job all the lot had to come off. The shaft was seized in the diff due to water ingress which caused a massive build up of rust. Shaft eventually came away from diff with the aid of a big compressor and air tools. Fortunately shaft cleaned up and no damage to it. Diff had to be rebuilt. All back together now and working as it should.

Many thanx to Bob at Wheelton Motorcycles Chorley for his help, saved me a fortune. Main dealer was quoting £3,000 to repair it. All done for £300 and a case of beer.
Wont be taking a jet wash anywhere near it in future. It will now be checked every service and re greased.

Be warned jet wash at BAD IDEA. Bucket and sponge in future for me.
