Title: ProjektD aerowings
Post by: O.C. on April 07, 2016, 02:34:42 PM
I ordered some Aerowings two weeks ago and they arrived yesterday

They were fitted today

Before

Initially the screen fouled the wings albeit only slightly

So some adjustment was required

Installation commenced

The finished job, which took about an hour.

I will contact ProjektD about the fouling issue as I suspect it might be part of the 2015 screen being slightly wider at its base.

You may want to check the well nuts behind those screws to see if they are cracked.  If so, you may want to reinforce them.  Both of mine were toast on both sides.

Will do Jim, the spacers provided within the kit are substantial, in fact the whole kit appears better than in the past (I have some spare well nuts)

I could have shortened the length of the lower spacers which would have provided more space at the top of the wing and thereby increased space between wing and screen, but it was better to bend the mounting brackets slightly and retain the supplied spacers as I'm aware that the well nuts can be problematic if not handled carefully, I must add that the whole kit has tightened up very well and is more solid than in my past recollection

I'll be out and about on the bike tomorrow so I'll see how they perform then

Well, it's actually not the well nuts themselves, it's the plastic bits that hold them in place.  Over time that plastic will crack and fall apart.  Don't know if it's from repeated tightening/loosening or just plain  :censored: cheap plastic.  All of those well nut holders in the dash area (including the mirror ones) will develop stress cracks over time and eventually fall apart unless you reinforce them.

Can you give a little more info about how / where you bent the brackets please?

As I'm thinking of buying a set.

I put them in my vice and simply applied some downward pressure, they are quite substantial/solid so don't be shy....they didn't need much 'adjustment'

Picture three shows my remedy, hope that helps

I have a set of these in a box.. Those plastic lugs did eventually break. The problem is that the wind on the Aerowings puts pressure on the mounting screws which cause pressure and cracking on the plastic lug.

That may well be part of the cause but there are others that don't have anything to do with the wind stressing them and they are  :censored: as well.  I think the plastic becomes brittle over the years and just deteriorates.   I did have Baker Air Wings for some time as well.  Don't have any now.   Just drink Red Bull.

Nothing attached to mine and the plastic is shot  :censored:

Told you.....   We don't pay attention to those plastic holders until they're totally broke.  I found the name of the UV glue kit I have.....Bondic.

http://notaglue.com/

You could probably plastic weld them too.  All sorts of things that you can do but it needs to be done before it cracks to pieces and litters the roadway.

This is a reminder to me to check mine as part of my Springly (I just made that word up) maintenance program.

I really don't understand why you are having these difficulties beegee, I have recently ordered a handlebar handy from ProjektD which arrived within 3 weeks plus I ordered the Aerowings which arrived within 2 weeks

I have also communicated with ProjektD and they responded immediately,  (same day)

Maybe you should contact them again and tell them your parts have not arrived yet....the parts are shipped from Taiwan so maybe there's a problem there

Good luck

I decided to have a look at my nuts today, with a view to ordering and fitting the aerowings and found like others on here that the plastic which holds the rubber insert nuts has in 2 places broken and fallen off and badly cracked (read buggered) in the others. My guess is the problem is caused by, the small amount of plastic and the use of the rubber inserts which expand and crack the plastic if only slightly over-tightened. So I have decided to make a pair of brackets which will bolt to the alloy bracket for the mirrors and should be strong enough for the aerowings. I suspect that  the fitting of aerowings will only increase the load on these fragile mounts. I have made a cardboard template and will get some alloy angle over the weekend to make the brackets with. If it works I will post a picture or two.

The Aerowings I fitted are proving to be very rigid, much more so than the last ones I fitted some years ago, lets hope Mother Kawasaki has improved the quality of the plastic mouldings on the later model GTR, out of interest the Aerowings look great and are effective

I had an issue with the wings fouling on the larger standard screen on the latest model GTR, so I contacted ProjektD and exchanged pictures and dimensions etc, they communicated with me for a week but I've heard nothing since
