Title: Hello from Downunder
Post by: oprah on June 17, 2011, 04:26:28 AM
Hi,
I am new to this forum, I have a GTR1400 which I bought new in October 2010. I already have 32000kms on it and I love it!!
Mods are only a GPS and a Two Bros exhaust because I hated the large original one.
I am on my third set of tyres....
Original Batlax lasted around 15000kms, then I got a set of Michelin PR2 which I replaced prematurely because I went for tour of Tasmania.
The Michelin PR3 have about 6500kms and already on the tyre wear marks...
Most of the Kms on the PR3 are with a pillion.

Hello Downunder person .. welcome to this great forum ! That's a lot of KM/miles since December last year ! No wonder you fitted a Sat Nav  ;D
Whereabouts are you down there ? It's a big place I understand ! The PR 3's get a very good write up over here for all aspects of riding .. they need to be good all rounders, especially in the wet ! Good to have you on board.

Hi,

I live in Canberra.

I am dissapointed with the PR3 tyres, they handle well but at 6500kms they are worn out.

That's about 4000 miles. Mine have done over 5000 miles now are are looking very strong. I'd be surprised if I don't get another 5000 out of them. I don't hold back with the throttle either

Well, if you did 6500km now then most of those would have been in summer and autumn, right?
And summers in Oz and therefore the roads tend to be quite hot. At least compared to what they call summer in the UK.
So maybe the PR3s may be very good tyres in a cooler climate but don't last that long on hotter road surfaces.

4000 miles is very poor, drop a line to Michelin and see what they have to say. What type of rider are you? Fast, harsh braking, accelerating etc.

I've done about 2000 + miles on my PR3's and they dont even look as if they have been scrubbed in. And my Chicken Strips are much thinner than NB's ;D

After I saw your chicken strips, I made sure I caught up. I think they are about the same as yours now

Ah ha, but that was weeks ago now. Since then I've been cruising around the Scottish Highland twisties and now its a case of I have no chicken strips.  ;D

I have 7,000 miles on my PR3's but most of those have been on Motorways.
If you ride the twisties all the time then they won't last as long, but will grip better than anything else, wet or dry, except for maybe some of the track-day tyres.

The Bridgecraps lasted longer but the handling was so awful that I swapped mine out well before they were worn out.

Finally, your roads in Oz are pretty abrasive and do tear up tyres something wicked.
You will probably need to find some tyres that suit your roads and style.
What, I have no idea but may be worth lurking on the ZG Fanatics or COG forums as they have lots of LD riders on there.
