Title: top boxes
Post by: Tony on March 16, 2016, 10:29:32 AM
Thinking I need to add a top box but don't want too bigger one, What does a 37 or 39 liter box look like on the GTR? I have a givi briefcase but to be honest it looks stupid on the GTR

Not much point in buying a sexy bike and spoiling it with the wrong box

there's a big range of luggage including top boxes available from Givi who are good quality and can be found at reasonable prices.

I'm not going to tell you which one to go for but I have a Givi maxia which is available in 52 and 55 Ltr sizes, recent posts on here have shown the Givi Trekker which is also a good box,  if you search "trekker" I think it will bring up the relevant pictures

I'm sure others will be along to offer further advice

Got a Givi V46, just upgraded to a Givi E55NT Tech Maxia (just arrived now ).
We managed with the V46 on my Pan and Blackbird touring here and abroad, but also had a tank bag as well. Only got a small Motech day bag on the tank of my GTR so decided to go for a slightly bigger box for Spain this year. Got it from Moto24 based in Germany at a very good price , 2 days to delivery from ordering.

Looks like a Phils Farkels metal top box plate, (Monokey fittings)

Be very wary of attaching anything to the factory plastic  :censored: rack.  Kwackers has replaced it once, but we've still had reports of it breaking under loads.  Go with something metal if you are going to attach a top box to it.

Sounds like phil's farkels rack is the one to go for then.

Can they only be brought from his sight and import from the states?

very good advice there Jim

The standard rack now seems stronger than in the past, however the Phils Farkel plate is much, much better than the OEM item

This is one of Phils / hero blobs plates with the monokey lugs on I think that was an extra £10 if I remember correctly

oes anyone make anything like this for the standard Monolock box?

It seems a shame (crazy!) to buy one of these and then bolt the plastic adapter plate on top of it.

My Shad top case came with a metal mounting plate.  I removed the POS plastic rack and mounted the metal plate in it's stead.

This is the top box that came with my bike, I believe it's a Givi 39 litre.

I have a Shoei Neotec helmet and the wife has a Caberg. They won't both fit in which is a bit disappointing.

There is a quick release plate mounted on the original rack

You will problably find that is the monolock plate the kawasaki seem to prefer .

Thanks Raven
The 39 litre size is what I wanted to see on the bike. this will be plenty big enough for me as the boss never comes out on the bike

Just been on the Kawasaki web site and yours is the 47 litre according to their information.

the Kawasaki cases are Kappa which are made by Givi, and very good they are too.

Always thought the Monolock stuff was more scooter orientated than motorbike, and monokey was bike orientated. Certainly the Monolock kawasaki top box and plastic Monolock plate that came with my bike seemed far less sturdy than the hero blobs plate and the Givi Monokey box now installed.  :whistling:

I have the Shad SH48 with a carbon look top and backrest and comes with a metal base plate.  On the GTR it doesn't look out of place and holds a heap load of gear.

Hmmm - does that fit both the Monokey and the Monolock.

It looks like its attaches to both....

How eager are you  for a swap/look see - cause I'm properly up north!

But at some point, I will be down in West Sussex.

Thanks for posting.

Yes it can be switched between both. I am in no rush just need to get sorted before a trip in May, the gtr doesn't have a mounting plate on it at the mo had to sell the other one with the Honda as it was on the fitting kit for that bike, so also need to sort that. I will be in Rochdale at some point in a couple of weeks for work.

ok, we'll i'm even further north than that - 2 hours, but I'm sure we can sort something....

Unfortunately, The mounting plate went with the GTR...... :-(

The mounting plate for the GTR also has additional support brackets -

http://www.motorcycleplanet.co.uk/products/624-givi-sr410-top-box-rack-for-kawasaki-gtr-1400/

So just be aware! also, if you are deciding to buy the mounting bracket - if someone fits it for you, make sure you take it off and copper slip the bolts - because they are at the back of the bike, they take a hammering in the wet.....  after 5 years - I twisted the head off the bolt and really struggled to remove it.

Talk to you soon.

Neil
