Title: Yet Another TPMS topic
Post by: badaboum on February 23, 2016, 10:24:00 AM
Guys,

My 2008 model and 44 000Km is now giving signs of weakness of both TPMS. Giving its 8 years, I beleive this is a pretty good lasting.

I have been hesitating between both solutions : changing the battery and changing the sensor...

----) Changing the sensor.

It seems that the sensor have evolved from the 2008 till the newest models:

PN of the 2008 sensor : 21176-0125     @ 180 USD
PN of the 2015 sensor : 21176-0748     @  190 USD

Question 1: What is the difference between those 2 models? Is the 2015 model retrofitable on my 2008 model?

Question 2 : Do we have to go to the dealer to have the new sensor recognized by the bike?

190 USD for something that last 8 years is pretty ''ok'' for me... Unless I have to add 200 USD for Kawa man hours..

----) Changing the battery.

Question 3 : Any feedback after several miles of those who made the change?

Question 4: What is the best solution for the battery? One that are soldereddirectly, or one that are pre soldered?

Question 5 : Any ebay link to good right angled valves?

Thanks for your help guys

Cheers from France

1.  They are physically different in the way that they are put together.  The new sensor will work on any bike year.  The new sensor does not have a way to replace the battery.
2.  Unless you have their programming tool, you have to go to a dealer if you replace the sensor.
3.  Can't help you there, changed the batteries in mine and so far so good on my classic sensors.
4.  I used the batteries with the tabs already on.  If you solder directly to the battery you may damage it.
5.  You can retrofit a 90 degree stem to a classic sensor but not to it's replacement.  You can buy a screw on 90 degree stem but we've seen some issues with that breaking off the stub.   Those        attachments are for airing the tire up and then they need to be removed.  As far as the classic sensor goes.  I bought mine from Murphs in the US but he doesn't carry them anymore.  I believe that they were used on Goldwings at first.  I'd give you a part number but I don't have one.

Hey

Thanks for the feedback

I guess I am stuck in removing myself the wheel and getting the sensor out...

Waiting for the PN of the angled valve.

My mate had a 90' stem and left it on the bike after doing his tyre pressures prior to a ride out. We had just gone through a fast road section and were rolling off on the approach to a roundabout (Thankfully)  :sweatdrop: when he had an instantaneous complete deflation of his back tyre, the one with the stem fitted. On inspection the stem had ripped off the stub and valve of the tyre. Had it happened minutes earlier at speed I'm not sure he would have survived as we were travelling through a tree lined area of road at speed. As it was, slowing down through 30mph to 15mph he managed to control the bike and bring it to a safe stop on the approach to the roundabout.
That is my only experience of seeing them fitted.

The 90 degree stem I have is integral to the sensor, not an add-on as such and is very lightweight.  The tire has been balanced with the 90 degree stem.  No one should ride a bike with a 90 degree stem extension on the wheel.  It is dangerous and puts undo load on the stem itself.

Indeed if I take the tyre of to do the replacement myselft I'll have the wheel balanced again.

Virginiajim, do you have a link where you got your 90° stem?

Besides, any of you can share his link on where he bought the battery?

Cheers from Paris

211760746
SENSOR,TPMS 434MHZ
£ 154.46
€ 176.08

Right, I click that button and all h*ll breaks loose and you'll blame it on the Yanks.  I'm assuming the link that states Just Here?  Ok, I clicked it and we're all still here.  I'm thinking 11.3 is too big.  Unlike in some things bigger is not better.  Hold on, I have to go into my lab and check the ones that came off of it.

Ok, here is what I have.  The part that goes into the sensor is 8 and a bit mm wide.  The thread pitch is .80mm.  Now bear in mind this comes from a US sensor.   Yours may be different.  11.3 is wayyyy toooo big for the sensors here in the US.

Another thing, the length of the shaft ( :mfr_lol:), is 12 and bit mm long.  Too short won't do at all.  And those on the website appear to be too short and not intended to be used with sensors.

I seem to remember something that these 90 degree stems that Murph sold at one time were intended for Goldwings..  Other than that, I got nothing.

Well, I may have a solution for you...took about an hour of searching.

http://forum.cog-online.org/index.php?topic=58030.msg442581#msg442581   Honda Goldwing 2014 VALVE ASSY., RIM 42755-MCA-R31

These aren't as pretty as the ones that Murph sold, but they should do the job.  Mandatory disclaimer:  These won't work with the new sensors.  Only the original ones.

Wahoo

Great digging!!

Indeed, on the COG it seems that the Goldwing 2014 model one will work.

Only issue, they are black, and my wheel is silver so that will be to visible.

I'll have a look and try to see if there is an available silver ones

Thanks

To all,

Did anyone have a link for the battery to purchase ?

Cheers

On his pic it is indeed silver, but when I searched the part on the web it showed up black

I beleive there is only one color?

Dunno.  You could always paint them silver to match the wheel.  I don't think you'll have much choice in the matter if you want them to fit with our sensors.  I just looked at your link.  Where do you see it's black?  Looks silver to me and the cap is silver as well.

I am going to go an check with Honda and I'll let you know.

Regarding the battery, 6 months ago, in preparation for the TPMS operation I have bought this:

(http://g02.a.alicdn.com/kf/HTB16PLSHVXXXXbrXpXXq6xXFXXXF/1-conjunto-10-PCS-nouvelle-CMOS-RTC-batterie-CR2032-12J1695-02K6572-12J1671-02K6541-pour-IBM-Thinkpad.jpg)

Is this the proper battery? If yes, I'll buy another one for the second wheel that I need to process

Sincerely

Thanks Jim

I beileve indeed that the one I bought is going to be to thick to fit

I have just ordered 4 from your site

Regarding the stem, I think the 2013 goldwing has silver stem and the 2014 model have black stem

I am just getting trouble finding the PN for the 2013 silver one.

I'll keep on digging

Cheers

Why not try the manufacturer - they're just round the corner from you.  They supplied the OEM TPMS wheel parts.

Just wrote to them..

I doubt they will be able to sell those to me.

I work on the aviation industry in the same type of material and contracts usually forbids the OEM of direct selling

but that worth the shot

I'll keep you posted

Wot I done.

So took the wheel off the bike and removed the tyre, you can see the TPMS screwed on to the valve.

Sensor removed and opened

Battery sliced off using a sharp knife, only bit of blood spilt.

I then soldered on a new battery and put it all back together.

It seemed a shame to put on the squared off BT21 so I put on a fresh PR4 GT. Tomorrow the front will get the same treatment.

Changing the battery is easy, especially if you get one with tabs already.

I'm after a new sensor or two.  I had to ride my bike about 25-30km 3 weeks ago with a dead flat tyre after picking up a small pieces of iron in the rear and rapid deflation.  That long ride on the flat tyre damaged the sensor, not to mention the tyre itself.  I'm keen to get  1 or 2 'blue dot' sensors so please advise if they are available as a separate item and price.

Were you able to get the LDL right angle sensors?  I already have those.

Freddy,

LDL confirmed that they have no stock of sensors available... They only change the batteries

I guess KHI stopped sourcing those from LDL and switched to a new supplier

LDL only sells the sensors, not the stems. What do you mean ''you were you able to get the LDL right angle sensors?  I already have those.?

No sensors from them eh?  That's a disappointment.

Yes Kaw supply a completely different sensor now but I would like to retain the LDL sensors with the LDL rt angle valve stem - is what I meant to say.  The new type sensor I don't like.

Just curious if you got yourself a pair of them yet as a small number of them are available in Australia,

I have seen those and I am too afraid of damaging the Wheel

Getting the tyre out and back cost 30€ for both tyres so that's ok, only issue is the time to take it to the shop and come back compared to the time to unweld and weld the battery!!

Hi ... 1st post on here ... Have had my GTR1400 for 8 years and love it ... however, for the last 3 years the flashing TPMS battery low warning light has driven me MAD, but I refuse to pay to replace with new sensors. Needing new tyres I persuaded J and S at Northwich to have a go at splitting the sensors and soldering in new CR2032 batteries. Its all working perfect!

J and S made no charge at all for swapping the batteries (which I supplied) ... so although the tyres cost a little more that Buckley Tyres would have charged, I'm v happy. Just wish I'd sorted it 3 years ago.

So, if anyone is suffering with dead batteries in the sealed TPMS, give them a shout. Have fun, Dave
