Having just learnt another useful tip by reading the forum, I thought I would add the 5 top things I wish someone had told me when I bought my GTR in case someone else finds it useful:
1. The tyres make a huge difference; changing from Bridgestone to Michelin Road Pilots was like changing the bike
2. The fuel tank isn't full when it looks full. Keep dribbling fuel in slowly and it just keeps going in without getting any fuller; adds a couple of litres and 20-30 miles to the range
3. Pressing the top and bottom buttons together on the dash cancels an alert; with low fuel or tyre pressure sensor batteries it doesn't have to be the only thing you see for miles
4. Pressing the windscreen button as you switch off the bike leaves it up for cleaning; you don't have to wash it with the ignition on
5. The tyre pressure batteries can be changed with a little soldering
I hope they are useful to someone and I look forward to finding more tips out from the more experienced users :-)

I think it was a fatal error, but nothing that a 24 hour stay in the cooler won't fix! :whistling:
Right, Col. Klink...
Overpriced, overhyped and over here!
although i cant fault any of my zzr 's or gtr they are the same
I'm off to the local BM open day in early Feb ... might just book a test ride on the K16 .. just to have a feel .. you know what I mean .. :innocent: :innocent:

Yep, I know exactly what you mean :mfr_lol:
But has he seen the list?
I rather doubt it. It hasn't been published yet...but soon. Remember the Great Idea? You know, if we play our cards right, this might turn out to have a life of it's own.

Mine did - the Inland Revenue even gave me a bonus to buy it!
Only worth buying if somebody else paying.lol.
I test rode an R1200RT a few years back and it wax a great bike and surprisingly quick, but the boxer motor is bland. Test rode a k1300GT a few months later and awesome power but buzzy as :censored:. Haven't ridden the 1600 but would be very surprised if it offered what I need from a motorcycle, especially at that price.
I still prefer riding my old GTR1000 but then it does have the worlds most comfy saddle and feels like a motorcycle should.
I love my 1400GTR too as the power, braking and handling are awesome, but the 27 year old 185k mile would be the bike I'd keep if I could only have one.
Perhaps I'll bring 'Otto' to Littledean in June :biker3:
As for "The List", wasn't it the K1300 and R1200GS that were destroying their final drives?
Looking forward to meeting "Otto" Boomer :punk:

I'm sure it was. Doesn't mean it can't happen again.
The sooner the list is out the better. It might stop these defections!

From what I've seen on the K16 you might be concerned about overheating, turn signals, water pumps, and music/comm issues. Nothing on the rear drives for the K16. For the C14 we have none of those issues. We do have problems with the TPMS batteries, but that's on the older bikes. The electronics are fairly solid. The rear suspension adjuster can lock up but we just don't see that in the US. We do have to be terribly concerned on receiving speeding tickets from local law enforcement, though.
he's back :mfr_lol: :mfr_lol:
And feisty with it OC :mfr_lol:
Thanks for good tips!

the k16 did have a few issues on the earlier bikes, and i dont know of anyone not getting the work carried out under the bmw warranty, infact they seem to go over the top with there service the newer models now seem sorted, which is probably why you can keep your warrany going till 80,000 miles which also includes breakdown assistance (i think )mr kawasaki seems to backheel some of the loyal customers when it comes to snapping windscreen mechanisms and warped discs.

Yep fair points there Keith and I hope that you enjoy your K16 as I'm positive you will, it is without doubt a very fine machine
There aren't any bad bikes these days, technology has moved on massively compared to say, 10 years ago.
There will always be instances of problems/defects with some brands and BMW has been no exception to that rule , the high expectation that the end user has these days, much of which is brought about by the media and aggressive advertising, is testament to that fact, plus such problems/defects will inevitably be 'hyped' up in the press - in some cases blown out of proportion.
I have to say that the after-sales care that I have experienced from Kawasaki U.K and also Kawasaki franchised dealers has always been outstanding (there have been precious little such occasions), by the same token I received comparatively poor service from a BMW dealer when I faced a serious product issue, as such I am, unsurprisingly, not impressed with BMW as a franchise.....but as I've stated before not all dealers are the same, it is, however, very easy to have a positive product opinion damaged by the poor action of one dealer, which is a shame.
We all expect more for our money these days, it's what we've been educated to expect
yes agree totally ,at present i hven't heard any bad negative feedback for the bm dealers yet,i have just managed 400 miles to now ,another 150 miles and i am booking my first service in at shipley were i bought it ,100 mile trip.but only heard good reports about them ...looking forward to a decent day to ride it down, the more i am getting used to the 1600 the more i like it .the 1600 engine is the smoothest i have ever experienced,i am down a fair bit in power from the zzr but in dynamic mode the 16 still has more than enough, and you dont have to rev the bike to get it going .this banter between the gtr and the k16 puts a smile on my face!!!!!like you say there arn't any really bad bikes now, the same as cars ,engineering is that far advanced now.......were's the sun!!!! starting to rain again up here ..
I have one of the earlier K1600's and touch wood I have had no issues with it in fact I think the gear changes on mine are quieter than those on Charlies 14 plate K16.
One negative memory of a Kawasaki warranty claim was when I took the GTR to a Kawasaki dealer and the dealer rang Kawasaki and I could hear both sides of the conversation. Kawasaki asked the dealership whether I was a good customer or not, the dealer said I was, so Kawasaki authorised the warranty repair! THIS IS DESPITE THE FACT THAT I HAD PURCHASED THE EXTENDED WARRANTY AND IT WAS STILL VALID!!
The dealer said you were a good customer
Only Joking, it shouldn't matter what type of customer you are, in fact all customers are good and they are the reason why dealerships exist, customers are the cause of a dealers work not an interruption to it

do you know if your bike has had the newer gearbox upgrade, know of a couple who had an issue with the box and bmw changed the complete box for the newer box and they all reported they were much happier with the gear changes.....mine is still changing quite nicely no nose at all selecting first unlike my zzr's smooth going up ,can sometimes get it wrong coming down and here a click.but i am getting used to it think it also is getting used to the wire free throttle
My GTR box is as smooth a s silk up and down
