Title: Tumble Dryer Fires
Post by: Longtom on January 22, 2016, 02:05:22 PM
This is nothing to do with bikes, but there was a thread a while back describing a fire in a tumble dryer and I have just found some information which might be useful, from, 'Which?' magazine. Between 2011 and 2014 there were 349 fires, and three injuries!.  There is a problem with Indesit and Hotpoint dryers, there are two websites where you can check your particular machine for safety:  safety.Hotpoint.eu, or, safety.Indesit.eu. Mine was on the list as a potential hazard, put your machine's serial number and model number in and if it needs modifying (the heater element is too near the filter) , they will ask you to fill in a form and will visit and fix it free of charge. Meanwhile, never leave them unattended and  clean the filters out after each use. More info. on which.co.uk/dryerfires.
Hope no-one minds me putting this 'heads-up' on a bike forum. Of course, if Kawasaki made them they'd be green, and very quick...,

I have already checked my Hotpoint and have been advised that it is one of the effected tumble dryers

A letter from Hotpoint states that the filter should be cleaned after use, every time, which mine is, it also recommends that the condenser unit is kept clean on a regular basis, which I always have done. I'm told to expect further contact from an engineer within 6-8 weeks

So, keep the filter clean and follow manufacturers maintenance instructions

Do you have the link where we can check?

I went to the Hotpoint.eu site and couldn't find where to check..

I do clean the fluff filter and empty the water every time I use it.. I also clean the condenser every month as recommended by Hotpoint.

To find out whether your dryer may be affected:

•  Visit one of these websites

   http://safety.hotpoint.eu

•  or please contact their freephone hotline at 0800 151 0905

Hope that helps

Ours is one of he ones affected too.

Reading between the lines of the letter we received ... the heating element is exposed (inside the case) and if the filter isn't kept clean restricted air flow can cause it to ignite the fluff/debris on the filter or inside the casing.

Having had a home fire in the passed...........

You just don't need that loss adjuster agro in your life. :gun_bandana:

I'm not surprised they are catching fire, if you remove the casing once a year and have a look inside ( not rocket science for anyone who can change a bike headlight bulb ), you will see all the 'fluff' that gathers in there.
Obviously these ones that are effected must be missing something or of just bad design.

Change the extractor pipe every few years too, or blast out with an air hose.

Having spent over 30 years 'putting the wet stuff on the hot stuff' it never ceased to amaze me, the utter and total devastation that a fire could cause to people's lives.

I spose I'm a bit anal about these things but I always clear out the filter and water container in our condenser dryer after every use I also vacuum out the ducting inside the machine

Finally it is never, repeat never, left on overnight or when we are not at home

I had no idea it would take over 14 months to sort out................Not the fire and damage but the loss adjuster trying to short change us  :gun_bandana:

Did you ever visit, Birkenshaw Fire Headquarters. They once gave us a 'talk' with visual aids of the devastation which fire can cause, none of it was pretty. Not a pretty way to go.

What does that mean?

Didn't you grow up in the 60's/70's?

Informal definition:  a group or person in a position of authority over others, such as a corporate employer or the police.

I never used this in reference to the Police.  I usually call them Cops.

Debs, I've just intercepted a second email from Hotpoint to you. It says if however you should experience a fire, destroying your house and all your worldly possessions within the next 8 weeks before our Service Engineer attends then please accept our deepest sympathies.

Strange you should make that observation Steve...............yesterday I received a telephone call from Indesit (about our tumble dryer)apologising profusely for not getting in touch sooner, I explained that they had been in touch twice, I was informed that I should have received an email (which I haven't) providing more detail/updates about a repair.

In te meantime we are waiting for them to act .................could be a longish wait methinks

Well July 08 2015 my LG Condenser tumble drier ignited whilst I was at work (left it with 20 mins to go on cycle, and had cleaned filters that week) moved back in on Jan 22nd 2016, left with clothes I went to work in, so everyone the rule is , do not leave them running while you are not there. PS the Firemen told me 20% house fires are started by washing machines, 11% by tumble driers, so I have bought a Miele gear as replacements, as I have not heard of one of theirs going up in smoke.
Its been a long hard six plus months living out of a suitcase, and happy to be back in my home, with everything new, but its not the same, and what I think of the builders is unprintable lol :tank:

Role on May when I'm off to Italy on the GTR 3000 miles and Mugello to see the great man race

Blimey  you have certainlyhad a rough ridethere 73, lets hope that your fortunes i prove from now on.

Since the phone call in early February we have heard nothing.

Now, I accept that the engineers department at Hotpoint are extremely busy, but I do think that the implications of this malfunction are extremely  serious.

TBH I think its an unacceptable situation,  :nono:

To be honest you need to get on Hotpoints case, because the ramifications of a fire are truly horrible, I am fully realising how much I lost as I attempt to replace what I can, but pictures, signed prints etc, basically irreplaceable, and my complete collection of Giles

Hi

My mum n dads drier is one of the ones affected, they have been given a date in September when it will be modified, 6 months, this is very poor.

At home our drier and washing machine live outside under a lean to roof, previous home they were in the workshop, I would never have either machine in the house, far to much damage can be done with leaks or smoke, never mind fire.

September? That's unacceptable.

I was offered a repair date in July, or the option of a brand new condenser replacement drier delivered for just £99. That will be here in a couple of weeks, if everything goes to plan.

Cheers
