Title: Battery Advice
Post by: Phill_York on January 10, 2016, 11:38:04 AM
I have managed to fry my battery by forgetting to leave it plugged in to the Optimate over the last 6 weeks and the muppet who I bought it from having fitted an alarm it discharged completely and now won't hold a charge.
I get through one every couple of years as my extra lights and comms give it a high load and I leave things switched on too often that I should :-( So my questions are:

1. Is a gel battery any better?
2. Has anyone tried a LiIon battery? On the face of it, it should be worth the extra money in my situation
3. Does the usual optimate charger work for all types of battery?

Thanks in advance for your advice :-)

I had the same problem by forgetting to turn on the charger and it keeps checking the battery and the alarm is also reducing the level .
I have looked at the new ion type less weight and size some came with packers but stayed with the old school type . Not sure if they are different chargers

Just a note when you purchase the new battery fully charge it before connecting to the optimate charger as this will read that as the 100% charge even if it's not

Try the Motobatt Quadflex battery part no . MBTX12U
more cranking power maintenance free with extra battery points for ancillary  wiring
IMHO best out there ...
with batteries you pay for what u get

Are you sure your battery won't recover phil? Try leaving it on a very slow trickle charge for four or five days and it may come back. Some smart chargers won't switch on when a battery is completely flat, but an old basic type charger might. Its worth a try, nothing to lose.

That's what I'm running now.  Just replaced my previous MBTX12U I got in 2010.   Starting to crank a bit slow...  It never had a tender on it but then I ride it all year long.
