after suffering a catastrophic failure of my lap top I have now ordered a replacement from Dell, its a factory recon unit with a good warranty, so should be okay for my needs.
However, here's the rub,.......I hadn't backed up my work for some time, and yes, I do have an external hard drive DOH . ..what a bloody dipstick
So its taken me about 2 hours this morning to sort out the mess but I've managed to copy my files to discs...phew
So I'll have to keep using this tablet until the new laptop arrives next week
That's a mistake I'll be careful not to make again ~~~ lesson learned
You should always back everything up! :mfr_lol:
And then backup the backup!
I always have three copies of everything I've created. Original on the PC. and then two further copies on external hard drives.
"synctoy" is a free backup program, very easy to use, 2 or 3 clicks & its done. It remembers the folders or drives you want to back up & where to save them to including external drives. Also "aemoi backupper" is a free cloning prog so if a drive goes pear shaped just swap the drive & thats it.
Both progs have saved me many times.
I have 4 clones of my "C" drive, rolling backups every 2 weeks, done by backerupper & my other 5 drives are backed up by synctoy.
cheers.
Yep, good advice there, and as an old work colleague used to say "that'll learn ya" :smartass:

Me to... :mfr_lol:
Another backup utility that I use is Second Copy. I either back up to a secondary internal disk or an external USB connected disk. There's also cloud backup options but I can't say that I'm real comfortable with those.
My external back up is a Hitachi Simple Drive with USB connection
I think having control over my back up is better than 'outsourcing '
That is of course if when I remember to back up regularly  :whistling:
I thought I was watertight, using Apple Mac time machine and a Western Digital network drive!
That was until I had to get some files back after an IOS upgrade - WD drive had a directory of all the backups, but no data inside them! :censored: 2 years of backups worth S.F.A!
Really worth checking size and contents of backups occasionally!
Should market a drive as "The mother-in-law"..................that almost always gets my back up!

I backup all my files monthly by just copying my Data drive to a USB harddrive.
About every 3 months or so I also backup my most important stuff to DVD-Rs and those get passed to a friend who keeps them.
We do the same for each other so that even in the event of a house fire it's safe.
I work in IT and have seen too many disasters where the backups we not done or not viable.
IT as well...although with the systems I work with, it's very rare for a tape save to go bad. Unfortunately, most leave the saves in the same room.

"Floppy discs" I'd forgotten all about them ~ things certainly have moved on
new lap top has arrived, all that remains now is to get it all set up, which may not be as straightforward as it seems
So for now I'm still using my tablet, which I've now got used to
Has anyone got experience of Windows 10 and its performance in forums ?

The older business systems that I used to work with used 8 in floppies...even had a magazine loader for them.
Windows 7 was great on laptops and terrible on tablets. Windows 8 was great on tablets and terrible on laptops (8.1 improved it to just bad). Windows 10 is great on both :-)
You should look at OneDrive for a backup solution, especially for multiple devices. For £7 per month you get 1TB of backup for 5 people and full office suite for 5 devices.
I don't work for, or sell, Microsoft by the way :-)

:goodpost:
found this on techrepublic.........................How many floppies to make 1 gigabyte!
8" floppy: 1024mb = 4000 disks 5.25 - 360: 1024 = 2844 Disks 3.5 - 720: 1024 = 1422 3.5 - 1.44: 1024 = 711 At this rate to carry around the equivalent of the 32gb thumb drive on my keychain it would mean carrying 22756 3.5" disks!
Cant recall what involves bits or bytes, but a awful lot of media!
Tell the kids how lucky they are today eh! :turned:
I remember when there were no PCs. People were happy to have electric typewriters. Just the other day my wife and I were in an antique store and I saw an old IBM 224 dictation device. Used a magnetic tape loop to store the voice recordings. I used to work on those.

Eee by gum when I were a lad Jim, we had no heating and frost inside our bedroom windows, ..........actually that last bit is totally true.
Your points are well made, we take for granted what todays technology provides for us, I recall the arrival of slide rules and how they 'modernised ' mathematics.
I will be spending some time tomorrow familiarising myself with Windows 10, the only post that I've made on here with the new laptop wouldnt allow me to apply my usual Blue font colour
Really interesting statistics there snowr0 thanks for sharing
Still have my slide rule and the leather case it came in....have no clue on how to use it anymore.

Yes they are all at it. It's just that vw got caught first.
To be technically correct its Volkswagen Aktiengesellschaft,
Having happily worked for them for 15 years it became somewhat engrained into my mind

I worked for IBM for 23 years. IBM is the king of acronyms and abbreviations. My area of expertise was (and still is) IBM mid-range Power systems. Many many years ago I was told to go to a class on mainframes. It was a several day class and I left during lunch to never return to it. The speaker threw out so many acronyms and abbreviations that it was like listening to a foreign language. I was so frustrated I just left.
