Title: Ear protection
Post by: O.C. on December 29, 2015, 06:40:35 PM
I've seen reports about ultimate ear products, is anyone currently using them or have used them in the past and if so what do you think of them. ?

I have some OC. I would wear them when I go abroad on long trips, but it's now illegal to wear them in France.. I have not worn them in a while. They are very comfortable too..

Can you guess which colour I have?

hearing protection is obviously very important,  the ultimate ear method seems good, but pricey

Yes and Yes...
I had to go to a hearing specialists to get moulds of my inner ear. Once received I then sent them off to have the Soundear made..

yep I take your point Debs,      I've recently seen a few posts on this subject and its got me thinking,  I currently use Alpine plugs which are quite good but clearly not as good as a more specialised product.

Was tbe hearing specialist that you used local or did you have to seach out a specialist that can handle this type of work  ?

OC ... "Ultimate Ear" are very good .. we have similar at work but they do harden up after a couple of years and you need a new set .. although that is wearing them most days for a good few hours   I went to Amazon and purchased a box of 200 pairs of Laser Lite ear plugs for around £18 if I remember the price correctly ... use a pair for a couple of days and bin them ... Health and Safety recommend after every ride to prevent possible contamination and ear infections ....but I can't bring myself to waste them so .... they are excellent and I think long term offer better protection .. I can still listen to music etc as the BM comms set is in the helmet. Even with modern technology and great helmets and big screens if you ride without plugs you're a fool.

OC.. I just used a local one that they recommended me to go to..

They also use Medical grade silicone material. I have had mine for nearly 4 years and they haven't started to go hard. Personally I can't see them going hard in the future.
Because they are moulded you can't put them in the wrong ear either. That's got to be a plus...

Yes you can get a box of foam ones.. I also have these but use them for sleeping so the noisy brat next door don't wake me with her crying..

It's personal choice OC..

They must be good if... Coca Cola, Suzuki, BMW, HM Forces, Renault F1 Team, BAE Systems, Thames Valley Police and others use them.

I use those blue Hearos 33 NRR (have no clue what that means but I like the colour blue).  They are re-usable...until the ear wax build up gets to be too much on them...even for me.  I then crank up the SMH10 and the phone and go to town.  Course about once a year I have to get me ears flushed because of the impacted ear wax build up.   It's all good, though.  It's illegal for me to have both ears plugged and running an SMH10 with two speakers in the helmet but (knock on wood) haven't been nicked by the constabulary yet.  And if so, I'll pay the fine and keep doing it anyway.

I had my ultimate ear plugs made about 15 years ago. They have not gone hard, but I think my ears might have changed slightly as the plugs do not feel so secure now, and I wear a neck tube or balaclava to cover my ears to stop the plugs slipping.
I also have a pair with built in ear phones which are not so old and fit a bit better.

I use a Senna SMH 10  and was wondering how plugs with built in ear phones wouldvwork with that

Works well for me and my elephant ears... :mfr_lol:  I've got the phone media volume cranked up into the 'Danger Danger Will Robinson' mode and the SMH10 volume all the way up to hear it though.    The SMH10 can't handle bass that well.  Course it could be that I'm over driving the speakers a bit.  Goodness knows what it sounds like outside the helmet.

I have used moulded plugs for years. My last set were from ultimate ear and have been great. I got the impressions done at the Bike Show and they took a few weeks to arrive. Mine haven't hardened either.
I know they are more expensive but I would advise getting the wired versions with speakers for comms.  They work as ear plugs when not plugged in but are brilliant for listening to audio whilst riding.
