Title: Lap Top
Post by: O.C. on December 21, 2015, 12:06:34 PM
My Lap Top has been playing up for quite some time now so I reckon it needs replacing as the cost of repairs outweigh the price of a replacement

I prefer a larger 17.3" screen, and  maybe Windows 10 pre-installed but I don't need gaming capabilities

My current Dell has been good so maybe that's an option

Anyhow any suggestions would be appreciated ,,,,Ta very mucho

Roger, whatever you decision is ensure you have a SSD drive in it as this is so much faster and along with as much RAM as you can afford or get, this will help heaps.

Dell are OK, Sony and Toshiba are reliable, personally I would avoid Packard bell and Asus for example.

Roger, I've recently purchased two new HP 17-3 inch top notch £900 each laptops, all singing, all dancing, high tech and spot on for photo and video editing etc. Each were brand new models with Windows 10.

Regrettably each had exactly the same fault from one of its hardware components which I wasn't prepared to accept, so I returned them both for full refunds.

Instead I bought an iMac and it is bloody brilliant. Some people hate Apple products but I buy what works for me and on this occasion that's an iMac. It might be something you wish to look at.

I have a 13" Macbook Pro. It's the best I have ever owned even though it cost me just over a grand. Had it now for 4 years and never had a problem with it...

I also have a desktop PC with Windows 7 on it but very rarely use it..

My old 17" HP laptop I gave away as it was a pile of  :shit:

What they said...SSD for hard drive and as much memory as you can put in it..   Also 64bit PC if buying Intel products with Win10.

Choose your spec and your budget.

You can always add more ram, and swap out the HDD for a SSD at a later date (or your local friendly computer-geek mate can...)

Personally, I'd go for lightweight and powerful (with small screen) which isn't too cumbersome to take with you anywhere, then spend an extra £75ish on a big monitor for when you're using it at home. (Assuming you don't just use it on your lap at home...)

Happy hunting!

Cheers

Infinitely better than Windows 8 (but that isn't difficult).

I won't go as far as saying "It's great" - but then I've never said that about any M$ OS...

It's usable. And liveable-with.

Hmm. The "free upgrade" path is very nice of them, but if you have a "mature" install of Windows 7 (which doesn't feel as snappy and responsive as it used to) then you'll end up with a Windows 10 install that doesn't feel snappy and responsive.

Strangely enough, Microsoft let you download everything you need to make an install DVD for Windows 10. The caveat is, you don't get any serial number with it. But worry not. If you go for the free upgrade path, then Windows 10 is activated according to your hardware. So if you do a fresh install on the same machine, it becomes activated!

So:
(1) Backup all the files you want to keep, just in case it all goes a bit Pete Tong.
(2) Create a Windows 10 install DVD for later use.
(3) Update Windows 7 to Windows 10. When online, it will be activated.
(4) If the "upgrade" is slow and rubbish, then boot from the Windows 10 DVD you created earlier, and do a fresh install. You may have to hunt down and install device drivers to make *everything* work, but when you get online, Windows will activated.
(5) If you read this far, kudos

Cheers

Paul B.

PS: If you don't want to install Windows 10, and want them to stop reminding you, just uninstall Windows Update KB3035583 and then hide it so it doesn't get downloaded again. Simples!

Thanks for that .
That was my fear I recall being told on previous updates 8 and 9 it's better to buy with it pre installed
Less hassle that's why I'm still on 7. I'm happy with my  laptop system

Well ! not surprisingly there's lots of great advice and help for me to peruse (thanks for your P.M. Paul)

I also have a smaller Samsung Tablet which I can take with me when required, so my lap top is primarily for Email and Forum use etc.,

I'll be researching the options that you have all highlighted,....it's a complex market with sooo many choices and I reckon it will be after Christmas before I'm able to arrive at a decision

If I do go down the replacement route I may well choose another Dell but time will tell

Try an Apple .. I know they are not for everyone but they are a quality bit of merchandise and I don't know of any failures, although I,m sure there must be some ! We are Apple'd up down here on the south coast and I bought my daughter a Mac Book when she went off to Uni in Sept ... she loves it.

My Dad has had a 17" Samsung laptop for 2 years now and it's been 100% reliable. Better than the Dell it replaced.

I have always been a Windows fan and always defended windows as being a good product for 90% of its users.

However, About 5 years ago, Work bought me an iPad and put me down an Apple route which I wasn't happy with.

Well, as I had an iPad, My contract was in need of updating so, I decided to go with the iPhone 4 at the time and the integration between the 2 was really good and the phone and iPad performed excellently.

Where this is going.....  well, 18 month ago when my laptop started playing up with malware and other rubbish, I decided to go down a mac route completely..... so I bought a 13" Macbook Pro with Retina Display - and I have to say - I find some of the software really frustrating to learn and dispel with my windows knowledge, but I don't think I would by another Windows Laptop.... apart from getting to grips with the software - I love the design, power, screen - If I took the time to learn some more, I'm sure the rest of it would be far better and more logical that windows.

anyway the upshot of it is, work has re-claimed my iPad, so I bough an iPad Mini, I've been through iPhone 4, 5 and 5s (didn't upgrade to 6), I have apple TV connected to my TV which connected wirelessly with IPAD, IPhone and Macbook, useful for showing films, photos, internet and I have an apple router, which has other features, like being able to stream music from your phone to your sound system.

Overall, I'm really pleased with going down the apple route - but overall there has been more ups than downs - so my recommendation to you is - yes they are expensive, but I think they are worth it, so don't write them off or overlook them.

Thats me done.

Neil

ps.  You can always run windows on a mac - via Parallels.

I'm a Mac user at home, forced to deal with Windoze crap at work. C'est la vie...

VirtualBox - let's you run as many "foreign" operating systems on your Mac as you like. And it's free!

Cheers, and Merry Christmas all!

would you believe it, my laptop has actually expired since my o.p and its terminal.

So I've ordered a replacement factory reconditioned unit from Dell, which should arrive within a week in the meantime I'm managing with this tablet
