Title: Wiring in sat nav power supply
Post by: Bogieknight on October 29, 2015, 10:16:20 PM
Hello All,

I've not a service manual nor any wiring diagrams, so can anyone advise whether there's a safe power supply I can solder into for my new TomTom? Anything under here?(http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/15/10/29/88812043ecbf807253633870171c4ce5.jpg)

All help appreciated!

That looks like the left hand side of the fairing, if so then you will see a nice shiny black round cover situated forward of the cupboard, inside there are two spare wires, one ignition feed and an earth encased in a clear cover, simply crimp an end on your sat nav and push them into the connectors. I cut my cover to gain batter access and when connected I simply taped it back up.

There is also two at the rear under the seat catch also in the black shiny cover.

Thanks BigAlan but its the top of the fuel tank, underneath the plastic cover - just behind the steering yoke.

The location you mention, have I got to dismantle the fairings and covers to gain access to it?

Have a read of this post. No need to remove the fairing, glove box removal may make access a bit better, but not essential.

 :agree:

Remove the side upper panel with the glove box in (easy) and there you will see the shiny black cover, there inside it.

If I can do it anyone can.

It can be located by hand without excessive dismantling, however you will probably lose your patience and most of the skin from your knuckles in the process.

Be warned the two wires you are searching for are very short   they are a 'switched feed' so I extended mine with bullet connectors and attached a Fuzeblock

As big Alan stated no need to remove fairing .
Under the cubby hole on the left is a black rubber boot covering some wires it's to help keep them dry.
Under this are two bullet connectors 1 positive and 1 negative connect here just crimp the opposite bullits on your Satnav no need to solder they will only power with the ignition on so no chance of flattening the battery search on here I'm sure mr wolf posted the bullet sizes  :punk:

Piggy back blade connection  off the front brake light switch.  Easy to do and very little wiring. Works for me. Also turns off/on with the ignition so no possibility of leaving it on and flattening the battery

😁

Thanks All,

I'll have a little go at it later.

I am more than impressed with the level of technical knowledge, and expertise on this site, I've learned loads. But as a non-techy guy  might I add my simple solution? I put a cigarette lighter plug on the charging lead that plugs into the mount and don't bother to plug it in if it's raining too much. The satnav  runs for hours on the internal battery and soon charges up afterwards.  :whistling:

Well it's all sorted now. Wired it into the spare accessory connectors by the glove box. Wasn't arduous. So thanks for all the tips and advice.

I did notice a design flaw though - there is a point where the wiring looms from the handlebars loops back and sits over the top of the left air intake duct. The duct has a joint that is secured with a metal band (jubilee clip or similar). I noticed it had a sharp-ish edge to it and was highly like to cause some significant chafing to the wiring above it, especially as the steering moves from lock to lock. I put some duct tape around the intake joint to create a smoother surface over which the wiring runs and to separate the sharp edges from the contacting the wiring looms. Not perfect but it should work. I recommend having a look to see if any damage has been done to the wiring and protect as necessary.
