Title: 660 wiring installation advice.
Post by: GTRpilot on September 05, 2015, 03:47:26 PM
My bike has wiring from the old zumo 550 attached.
The wires are spliced into two of the bikes wires under the right hand top black panel, with a drop of solder over the connection.
Do I
1. Try to heat the old solder up to remove it, unsplice the wires, remove and attach the new 660 ones and re solder over the top,
Or,
2. Cut the old 550 wires at the solder point, and cut into the bikes wires slightly further up and splice the new wires in there?

3. Any tips on soldering......... :help:

if you were happy with the original connection and you are happy it had good fused connection , just heat up the soldered joint and undo/redo.

personal I like to use a butane  solder iron , fairly cheap from maplins.

defo put some lengths of heat shrink tube on first and warm it up with a hot air gun after wards, a real nice professional join !

Mine is clipped into the harness at the point where there's a connection for a spare plug socket.

Unless you are already using them, there are dedicated accessory leads with female/male bullet connectors under the rubber boot by the storage box in the l/h fairing.
However as viper said, if you are happy with the 550 connection, reuse that but ensure it is a good solder joint with plenty of heat shrink sleeving to ensure it is water tight.
Edit for correction

No not using them, will have a look for them, sounds an easier route, Thanks.

You'll need to fold the rubber boot back like a cuff, the connectors are obvious but on a short piece of wire.
Black wire with female connector is switched live, black with yellow trace and male connector is earth.

I fitted my 660 to these bullets I just crimped the opposite ones on my Satnav leads.
The good thing connecting here is it powers down when the ignition is off no chance of the Satnav flattening the battery

Thanks for the info.

No problem.
I slipped a piece of shrink tube on the wires and heat shrieked it after connecting the bullets for a bit more water protection .
I can't recall the size of the bullets but Mr Wolf posted on here the size do a search.
