What exactly does the first service entail ? is it just engine oil and filter, or is there more to it. Mine is due in in a fortnight, but it's already done eight hundred miles because they (Orrell Wigan) didn't have a slot to fit it in so it will more than likely have done over a thousand by the time they get to see it, not to bothered though as our new cars first service is nine thousand miles, so cant see any harm coming to the bike. ;D
Probably just a kick of the tyres, check a few nuts and bolts and raise an invoice for £200!

Most engines are bullet proof these days but I personally wouldn't wait for what is twice the recommened mileage for a service just in case you are unlucky and have to make a warranty claim that may be refused because you didn't have it serviced according to the schedule in the handbook which also answers your question about what is done during the service
Think in your position I'd get some oil and filter and keep the receipts or leave the bike in the garage and use the car until its serviced
I would speak to the stealers and let them know your mileage and explain that you NEED the bike for transport and get their 'Authority' to use it beyond the 600 miles as it is their fault they can't fit it in.
it may be 9,000 miles for your car first service! but that dose not have a wet clutch,or the tolerences as precise! the engine oil in a your bike as to work dam sight harder than your car engine oil, it also acts as a coolant, so best to get change as soon as you can, some dealers prefer to let the bike go to reach 800 to 1,000 miles to make sure all the running crap is out! so this will not do any harm to your bike! but would not let it go over 1,000 miles, simple because they use a special running in oil, also make sure they change your shaft oil, some dealers tend to think it will not need changing on the first service, its a 5 min job and a small amount of gear oil, infact buy your self a 1ltr bottle of putoline sae ep80w/90 api gl5 heavy gear oil approx £7.99, and change it every year when you change the engine oil.
