If the GTR did not exist what we ride. I only want shaft drive so the choice is a bit limited these days. BMW offer a range of shaft drive bikes but I have had them in the past and had problems with them. OC's bike looks good but wonder about pillion comfort. Any thoughts?
fjr1300 or an 1800 goldwing
The K1600 is proving quite popular at the moment!

Yamaha Super Tenere is what I ride, ......no reliability problems with this superbly built bike. :biker3:

Must be thoughts in the wind - I have just been going through the same exercise. I'm probably going to change my steed end of 2016 and the only one in my mind is the K1600GTL - we had an 1800 Goldwing before the GTR and the GTR holds more when touring unless you added the trailer which tended to make filtering a bugger. My concerns were brushed aside ie amount of trips I tend to do to Europe, we would still have something fast, smooth, reliable, easy to keep clean, corrosion resistant, sophisticated, well equipped, high service intervals, with lots of dealers across the UK & Europe - deciding factor was the wife liked the rear seat comfort on the test ride.
I loved my previous bike [Vstrom 1000], and would probably go along those lines again. Possibly BMW F800GS, or Versys.
You could try one if these mate.

Never seen one in black yellow ........looks good.............not sure if it's me though but would be good for a blast on a hot day on the French Riviera :punk:
I look for shaft drive as it is a long life solution to final drive..............so choices are BMW Moto Guzzi early MV Agusta a handful of other product from a variety of manufactures
Really enjoy my Old War Horse and can't see us parting although others may :scooter: come join and leave
Charlie would you ever seriously consider a K16?

First one is green, second one is a Kawasaki, take your pick
When I was having loads of hassle with the dealer who I bought my GTR from, had 6 hours to muse over their current stock!
If they hadn't fixed mine I was gonna try the Crosstourer (bland but a VFR motor? gotta be good!) or a new 1000 Versys - if only it was a shaftie!
Yo Doebag my friend :punk:
That has got to be the inline twin every time. A mate had the thin rimmed model ( I always get the S7/8 models mixed up) and I've happy memories of pillion riding going to lunch in the village pub up the road from the first bike shop I worked with when we shut on our half day. For those who have not riddern pillion on a machine fitted with independent large bicycle saddles it is a unique experience with both pilot and co-pilot boncing up and down independently of each other and to complete the effect the Sunbeam is bouncing to its own rhythm :mfr_lol:

So Wolfy ....................if I'm understanding you correctly .............you are thinking the Bike Hanger needs a third member ?
The thought of owning 3250cc 12cyl 40v 340bhp does appeal :punk:
May be I'll have to come clean and own up.................. And admit I fancy a 1400California :mfr_lol: :mfr_lol:
Or should I come clean ?
Maybe you should come clean, yes indeed.
@Charlie747 it is shaft drive mate 😎

Ok time to come clean........................... :hammer:
I was down my local bike rescue centre early June............you know what it's like .................bikes brought for a holiday then left unloved in the Shed as thir owners go off chasing new thrills with fast loose cars women cameras fishing rods watching paint dry (think I mean football) etc etc
Among the pure breed Italian red exotica were some early jap machines and stuffed in a corner was an old barge of a bike European in nationality and breeding.
It's big old puppy eyes looked down on me and I felt for the old dog.
Knowing rescue bikes get stock cleansed after 90 days I wondered if Cheryl would feel the same as I about adopting and giving the old barge a purpose in life ?
After 3 or 4 false starts due to the English summer the pair of us took the old barge out......:scooter:.
Despite having been dealer serviced less than 6 weeks and 200 miles earlier and standing proud on France's finest PR4's fitted at that time it was tragic that the Crash Team had to perform CPR to get her out the door...............
Not put of by this behaviour we went for a little bimble only to discover half her functions had failed !
The pair of us left the rescue centre that evening sad that our potential adoptee could be in danger of death through premature ECU failure
Weeks passed by and all was quite.............then a call came through......................the old barge lived............"...having spent weeks at a main dealers it would appear the brain surgery had been successful and a new ECU transplant was being trained up.
Much discussion then followed at home regarding whether we had the space and what have to home such a barge ?
Would the Old War Horse welcome the company of the Old Barge or would there be conflict ?
So late last week I confirmed and signed the adoption papers and after sterilisation we can bring the old barge home.
I took a quick picture before we left

Niiiice colour Charlie.
Friend of mine has an F800GT in that colour.
Thanks Doebag
Would still love a Sunbeam S7/8 to add to the fleet :punk:
I just hope it's reliable as the Old War Horse ?
I suppose time will tell

Very nice bro.
Did you p/x or do you still have both for now ??. :punk:
Nice one Charlie, I'm pleased for you and I hope that you enjoy the new steed every bit as much as the old war horse (which I assume you are keeping)
Note to Asif.....new forum section will be required soon for K1600 owners and (S10) :mfr_lol:

I love my GTR so there was never the question of Px Bro
On the short ride I had on the K16 (1hr) I realised that it was a comfortable and very effortless.
When I got back on the Old War Horse she felt like a small raw sports 600 .................YeHa Fun :punk:
So although both bikes are classed as sport tourers.............................the K16 is on the tour side and the GTR the sports side of the expression
I just hope We don't come to regret our decision.

Did very little homework on the subject..............
So before getting the GTR lurked about this site and found out about discs and knob problems..............missed the tank rust one though :surrender:
So I go on the K16 site for the first time and read of piston skirts cracking !
Just hope I'm not going to regret this adoption :mfr_lol:

You guys and girls have to understand that the Old War Horse and the Old Barge are to fit in with my bipolar split personality.
GTR for crazy mad extrovert Charlie some of you have met
K16 for the dank dark deep thinking introvert Charlie whom none of you have met ( thank goodness ). Was it Churchill who said..............it returns like a black Labrador to sit at your side ? Or words to that effect.
Am looking forwards to having a choice of which 150+ bhp bike to take for a ride. :scooter:

On our (me and my brother) Kawasaki ZRX-tour to the alps this summer, we ended up in Ischgl in Austria and rented motorcycles for a day Just to try something else. I went for a BMW R1200RS and my brother took a Ducati Diavel. The Ducati was a big disappointment, but the BMW.... WOW!
For the first time since I got my GTR 2 years ago I found a bike that can match my black thundernugget. resonable light, More stable than agile, but fun enough in the hairpins. Alot of grunt at lower revs, and a broad powerband. Some vibrations, but not to disturbing. not as good windprotection as a GTR but good enough. Very comfortable seat. a more forward leaning riding position than GTR, so its more sport than touring compared to the big Kwack. Alot of gadgets with ESA, shift assist, tunable riding modes, CRUISE CONTROL!!. 8 hours and 250 km of realy big fun. Probably best riding day on the whole trip.
So this is the bike I would have if there wasn't a GTR around. Heck, I might even trade in my Thundernugget for a Brunhilde von Shaftdrive
