Title: BMW R1200RT
Post by: PRD on July 31, 2015, 08:17:50 PM
Today I rode the  R1200RT. I have owned some BMW's in the past. I hasd .a 100/7, 100cs, 60/7 and a K75. My favourite was the 100/7 a low tuned air cooled flat twin, simple to maintain and very long legged. It even had a comfortable seat!  I wish I never sold it. The K was very smooth but electronically unreliable. And it was during this time I developed a dislike of BMW dealers. These guys really know how to charge. So  I went back to the Japanese.  I spent an hour or so on the RT and was not that impressed. Awful clunky gearbox, too low a screen, very sharp throttle. And wooden brakes. For that kind of money I expected better. Getting back on the GTR was lovely.

Perhaps you should have tried the K1600 while you were there.... :whistling:

PRD - You didn't ride it long enough!

It is a stunning bike once you 'dial' into it.

I tested it last year for RiDE and was unimpressed.

I was issued one for work in May and was not looking forward to it.  However once I started to really use it I found it sublime, sweet, great handling and feedback, superb brakes and great accessories.

If I didn't have the K16 I would buy one - I even looked at the cost of changing when I went to the local dealers but financially it wasn't worth it.

GTR is still a great bike though, it has a lot more 'solid' feel about it, probably due to the lighter materials used by BMW which can seem flimsy in comparison.
