Title: Beam Benders
Post by: snowy on July 19, 2015, 02:22:18 PM
Will be the first time abroad with our GTR later this week, can anyone recommend a beam bender / Euro converter that works well on the GTR? Any bike specific tips for the journey would also be appreciated, touring Spain & north Portugal.
Anybody else on the Portsmouth / Sanatander ferry on Friday?

Beat me to it.
Also, if you are using sat-nav you are supposed to disable any speed camera alerts while in France.
Not sure how gendarmerie are going to know, UNLESS they stop you for some other reason and then check your unit.

Gents, many thanks, never heard of "flat beam" before, but makes sense and suits me! Less hassles the better!

also, darkness is the time for drinking/sleeping. Why travel at night when you cant see the magnificent views you will be exposed to

Hi Snow, I travelled quite a bit at night on my last adventure and did get flashed a few times. It did look to me that the beam was drifting slightly over to the left, so just adjusted the beam height a little to reduce the dazzle. Maybe it was just the extra weight of all the kit lifting the beams rather than the direction of them. I was a little paranoid about it though lol.

Agree fully, but there'll be the first leg getting to digs off the 17:30 ferry, then 200 miles, unavoidable evening driving, and I don't want the locals distracted by being blinded rather than seeing me on the road! Badly adjusted headlights and incorrect use of fog lights are two of my biggest hates!  :gun_bandana:

Thanks Shaggs, that's one bonus of the GTR is the adjustment is accessible, my SuperTen was a swine to get at beam adjustment, this is luxury! Just gotta get recovered after me night shifts -  - then hit the road on Friday!

See that's why I always get the early train/ ferry. I can ride to the departure point in generally well lit roads, get breakfast while waiting to board, tank will be filled near the port. Once the doors are open  I've got 150+ miles of petrol, the sun is just starting to come up, the birds are singing, what a great start to any European adventure. I will then ride/ explore all day until about 5 pm, time to find a comfortable hotel for the night, with a selection of bars/ restaurants nearby.
We all want different things from our trips, with me it's the sights, sounds and smells which you don't get travelling after dark, as always each to their own, but you won't see me fitting better lights!

I'm sure you'll have a great time, I'm jealous already! Would love to get back to Europe on the bike again this year, but I doubt if the mrs would let me haha. I hope you have plenty of ventilation in your bike gear. Looks like it's gonna be a hot one!

the law in france is not to dazzle other drivers . so the gendarmes could only do you for that if proven. Not having visable beam deflectors on isn't an offence.
There is a good post I put on her a while back on exact requirements for france and Europe , most things we think we should have are myths , very little that is compulsory, I will try to find it
