Seems a good idea.  Too many these days on the phone.  I reckon the woman who took out my son was on the phone, but the police didn't bother to check.  Said its only careless driving and she is being done for that anyway.  £100 cooffee morning in exchange for a life of disability.  Sound fair?

Instead it looks like they are just going to enforce speeding.
It's like the stupid companies who sack their most productive employee because he is regularly 5 mins late.
Obviously it's far better to keep the useless moron who is always on time.
Apparently it's best to only bother to enforce the easiest thing to measure.<sigh>

We already have far too many drivers doing 15-20mph BELOW the limit which leads people to take stupid risks to pass them.
Need to place a LOT more emphasis on considerate driving than on speed and considerate means thinking about your effect on ALL other rosd users, not just those in front.
As for the phone using twats, gimme a badge and I can guarantee 30 nicked per day on only a 10 mile stretch of dual carriageway.

If only we had a police force that would or could implement such laws! :police:
Why do our illustrious leaders continually make laws that cannot be enforced?
All we can hope is that natural selection gets rid of the part of the gene pool who practice all this, without claiming any innocent victims in the process.
All vehicles should have radio / Faraday cages so devices would be useless until connected to a suitable and recommended interface. Seat belts should be connected to immobilizers - the technology exists why don't we employ it!
Oh, and what about a scheme where you have to demonstrate competence and consideration to maintain the right to drive?
Not saying I'm a perfect driver, who is? Continual education and assessment would be a start
Just too many innocents affected by the few idiots!
This last weekend - start of school holidays.........OMG......the defective gene pool is multiplying!!!!!!

With very little effort.

Bounds of reason... I'm all for stopping motorists using phones while driving but ALL of these were whilst pulled up and stopped at lights. That's low hanging fruit AFAIC!

The issue is that even using a mobile whilst at the lights is illegal and many such offenders continue to use their phones after leaving the lights with, in many cases, disastrous consequences

Sorry, I thought the issue was driving whilst using a phone not sitting in a stationary vehicle whilst using a phone. Show me some evidence of accidents caused by people using their phone whilst sitting in a stationary vehicle and I'll change my mind.

By all means pull them over have a word... if they're actually driving whilst on the phone that's a different matter; by all means start issuing points, fines, driver awareness and retraining, all the way up to bans if necessary, but that's just like my opinion man.

For clarification.....even if stationary at roadworks/traffic lights etc under the definition of driving, you are still driving.

Thanks for the clarification, I completely accept that is the definition. The moment you pull away whilst using the phone... boom, you're nicked. I will accept however, that in this situation it must be a balance between pragmatism, following the letter of the law, being reasonable and letting the police use some discretion.

Welcome back Stephen, i for one have missed your reasoned insightful comments on a variety of topics. i know they pissed you off before but it is an open forum and you will not get consensus on all topics, there are extreme views on extreme topics and neither you nor the combined opinions of any forums will change their minds

It takes strength of character to admit you are wrong................some people will never develop that inner strength

The lack of respect and arrogant attitude shown in red above requires corrective education IMO.........................................may be a driver / phone course would save some one being involved in a life changing event in the future ?

Out of interest...............
There are some areas like supermarket carparks where you can be nicked for e.g drink driving. Not the public highway but an area with access to the public.
Can you be done for driving on the phone [ yes you know what I mean Charlie 747] in e.g a supermarket carpark

Good point. And one that must have had a test case by now ?
