Title: Pannier protection, my solution.
Post by: mark1400 on July 12, 2015, 12:42:28 PM
Hi there, I thought I would share this with you as it may be useful.

I wanted to protect the panniers from scratches and scuffs, the main dealer fitted the Kawasaki protective film and did a really crap job, started peeling off so I have removed it.

I decided I needed a solution that was not permanent, was rectifiable and removable without damaging the original finish.
My solution was plastic dip spray paint... A rubber paint that can be peeled off in seconds if I want to remove it.
The cost, £22 to do both panniers. I used one and a half cans of spray paint, one would have been enough but the more paint you spray on the easier it is to peel it off and reveal the original paintwork.

7 to 10 min between coats, 6 coats...job done.

I have attached a picture I hope it works.
Cheers.

Missed a spot...    In all seriousness, though, looks quite good.

Very good, and so much better than the clear stick on things that don't stick correctly even at room temp and using a soapy solution ....dont ask me how I know  :hammer:

I guess it was something like this that you used ?

What about color change? Is it the same glossy effect as the paint?

DO you have a pic of the pannier on the bike with sun?

Cheers

I did put 2 layers of Glossifier on it but it didnt make much difference, there is a clear coat spray... that might be better though from what i have seen on youtube it makes it harder to remove the rubber paint & i dont want to risk the origional paint.

I would have liked a high gloss finish but its a shiny matt effect, i know thats a contradiction but thats how it looks & has a matt rubber feel.

At the end of the day if you dont like it its only one hours work & 1 can of spray lost so in for me personally i thought it was worth a try. If i didnt like it i can remove it in about 2 mins.

I did a small test piece & it peels off real easy in one big piece.

I have noticed that new colours are being added all the time but a perfect colour match is going to be hard to find unless you want to mix your own which will be trial & a lot of error im guessing.

Its a very cheap & not perfect solution but for my needs it works & im happy with it.
Cheers.

You can get pearl but you may have to mix it in yourself, granuals in a small bag to mix in the paint so you will need a compressor, spraying gun etc. I would think pearl spray will be available eventually... but im guessing now.

cheers.

I like the idea....  Even can use that spray to make some extra stripes or try with 2 colours without dammage,   always can turn clock back...  ;-D :punk:

Are you just using the glossifier or are you using the paint as well?

I look forward to hearing how it goes.

Heres a pic of mine on the bike.

Cheers.

I found the glossifier didnt seem to do a lot.

But i have discovered (after the wife scuffed it) that you can spray over scuffs with the paint & it fills them & blends in fine. Just sprayed the local area a few times, no masking, worked a treat.
