Hi There, before I go and spend over $50 on postage does anyone know what size Ram mount fits our bikes The best place I've found is in the USA (http://www.advancedsporttouring.com/product_p/c14-07.htm) but the shipping trebles the price. This is what I'm going for since the price of a Gamin is £500 (http://www.ultimate-mobiles.co.uk/Consumer_Electronics/Mobile_Phones/Apple/iPhone_6_47/motorcycle/Waterproof_Tough_Mount_Case_for_iPhone_6_47?bid=108) but the trouble with this link if you add to basket it asks what size of screw for the ram mount you want and then lists four options?
Although the second link shows it attached to the centre we don't have anything to screw into, I took the little plastic cap off and there's nothing there, so that leaves clutch or break lever.
If anyone has or knows of a better set up then by all means say so.
i bought the kawasaki mounting that fits perfectly and mounts your garmin between the handlebars.

Looks like a good set-up but I don't fancy been ripped off by Garmin, when I've got phone which does so much more, music, camera, phone and GPS. For a car GPS you'll pay less than £100 for a bike GPS £300 upwards, bikers are getting scammed!
yeah i thought that. i had my phone as a sat nav. let me down EVERY time. they are not accurate enough.
im really really pleased with it. yes it is expensive, but i need to get where i need to be for my job so it has already paid for itself.

I give this a go on my trip round Scotland, if it lets me down then I'll go back to Garmin, but for the price it just really hacks me off especially since a car nav is so cheap.

I thought the same way as that Dash, and had my phone in a waterproof case for trips in the UK and it was fine. I only bought a Garmin 660 for a trip to Europe, but found it so much easier to use as you could use it with your gloves on and could search fuel stations and the like when waiting at the lights. I'm not sure if its worth the extra money, but I'm glad I have it, and would probably buy another if mine failed. I just waited to find one on ebay for the right price.

I'll try it for Scotland but I will want to go and Europe again, the first time I used my cars tom tom but it didn't have Bluetooth so had a earphone inside my helmet which got me to the south of France and back, I have heard good things about the Garmin sat navs and it my be that I buy one but I had to try the alternative first, Garmin even do an app for the iPhone, it didn't get good reviews so I'm gonna try an app by scout which has traffic and speed cameras built in.
I use copilot on the iPhone and it's been as good as any of my pure sat navs. Been all over Europe with no problems but I always have the backup of using the native iPhone maps as well. It's just they only work with a signal and the sat nav app has downloaded all the maps it needs. I always figured if one app was no good I would just download another :-) all I would need is data connection or wifi.
I think it was about £30 for Western Europe plus the very expensive iPhone of course. I use it in other peoples cars, when walking etc so I always have my sat nav with me as always have the phone with me.
It's not great with gloves but I velcrod a touch screen pen above the clocks and use that if I need to. The Velcro has survived autobahns and 140 mph so seems to work.
So yesterday I had a run up to St Marys Loch near Selkirk and tried my iPhone as the sat nav on the way back and I couldn't hear a thing the volume on the app turned to max so I tried Google maps again couldn't hear a thing so I'm gonna knock that idea on the head, if I turned the volume up on my scala rider G9x it would have blown the headphones when the music came back on so gonna look at a cheap sat nav.
gutted.
Thanks for all your replies.

Hi, how is the visibility with that fixed mount? I've got a RAM ball mount on my Bandit currently and I'm looking at getting a 1400GTR, mounting the GPS is a definite requirement! I find with the Zumo 660 I sometimes need to reposition the arm to reduce glare, obviously that wouldn't be possible with a fixed bracket.
The kawasaki fixed mount [ in the pictures] is OK.
The Zumo does suffer from glare in that position sometimes, but then I normally listen to my Zumo, stealing the odd look to confirm any voice directions I am not sure of.
The Zumo will be obstructed if you use a large tank bak.
However it is neat and un-obtrusive.
There are lots of articles on here about sat-nav mounts. A popular one is a stem mount, it keeps the Zumo in a similar position, but raises it above tank bag height, and is adjustable.
hi ant177.
the Garmin 590 doesn't suffer glare really.
