Title: Camera mount
Post by: cribby on June 17, 2015, 09:58:17 PM
I just dug deep and bought the new Garmin Zumo 590 and a Garmin VIRB camera. I had the Zumo 660 before so I had to change the mount over but where the hell do I mount the camera, any ideas please? (no smart arse ones please)! LOL

What's the mount like for the Virb?

Hi

Its a sticky base with a screw on adaptor for the camera mount. I was going to stick it on the flat black part of the fairing just to the side of the right hand mirror but that slightly obscures the camera. I looked a sticking it on the side of the fairing just below the riht hand mirror but HMM!!

here is an image of the camera and mount

Cribby in the past I had a camera mounted (GoPro) to the underside of  the left side rear view mirror.

The GoPro mounting sticky pads would fit there quite nicely, I'm guessing that your sticky pad mifgt be of similar dimensions

Just a thought.. good luck

I fitted mine to the underside of the left mirror and on selling the bike a few weeks ago, was able to remove the mount without causing any damage to either the mirror or the camera mount.

Yes they are, just ensure that the surface is spotless first. I used some Auto Glym Intensive Tar Remover but only because I already had some in the garage, meths, vinegar, anything like that would probably do.

Yep they are, as a belt and braces move you can also attach a lanyard in case it becomes unstuck, that way your new camera won't go bouncing down the road

If you want action shots mount the camera low. This gives the impression of speed.
If you want footage for insurance purposes mount high.

Thanks fellas.

I'm teaching on the bike tomorrow so will pop down the garage later and stick it on.

It looks like a fab piece of kit as you can control the recording function from the zumo 590.

I'll post some photos on as soon as I can

I have a VIRB Elite camera and I use a RAM suction mount that I fit to the windscreen, its very secure & with the RAM double socket arm plus a VIRB mount, it can be adjusted to any angle.
Vibration can be a bit of a problem as the windscreen does flex slightly, but a long as you use the "image stabilisation" feature of the camera, it works well...
I hope that helps, I may post a picture of it on my bike later, plus some sample videos if anyone likes!

If you attach a lanyard/ elastic band/ shock cord to the head of the mount and just tensioned to suitable point, it will take a lot of the shake out of any footage

Great idea! - thanks , I had thought of putting some foam rubber between the fairing & windscreen too, maybe both together will work well!

I had exactly the same dilemma with my VIRB.

I now have one of these: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/272041921254 (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/272041921254) on the crash bobbin.

I will be fixing my GoPro under one of the rear view mirrors and have decided to use a swivel mount  which should enable me to capture film in front and behind......but not at the same time  :mfr_lol:

I'll report back

Here ya go. The yellow cover is a 'silicon skin', in case I do a butter-fingers whilst fitting or removing it.

The mount is surprisingly solid, despite the number of joints.

Cheers,

Paul B.
