Title: Servicing question.
Post by: GTRpilot on June 08, 2015, 03:46:05 PM
2011 GTR, just done 8000 miles, last serviced one year ago before I picked it up.
Had a quote for a service of between £300 - £350 depending on what needs doing  :undecided:, fluids etc.
Does that sound reasonable, or should I have a crack at it myself, don't think clutch and brake fluid needs replacing, they both look ok.
What else needs doing at this mileage?

Oil, filter and final drive. 30 minute job at most and easily done. I change brake and clutch fluid annually, no matter what it looks like, can be a pain to bleed at times but worth it. Someone else may have more info, but that's all I'd do.

Oil and filter , air filter ,  take the brake caliphers off , pads out ,get some brake cleaner pump the Pistons out a bit and useing a toothbrush clean all around the Pistons , as long as the oil and filter are changed once a year it will run forever ,  :biker3:

The owners manual lists everything as Inspect and check apart from

engine oil and filter

spark plugs

engine vacuum syncro  adjust

however if the bike is running fine id only bother with oil and filter. rear shaft oil is a check only but as its so easy to do I replace it at every engine oil service

So it actually shouldn't cost you more than £50. If the bikes out of warranty which it probably is being a 2011 model just do it yourself.

Self service it is then.
I'm thinking semi synthetic rather than full synthetic for the bike? Any preferences on make of oil, or will any make suffice.

Thanks you muchly

I just use a semi , look for cheap but known brand , but I change every 2k so expensive oils are a waste for me   10w40

Yeah I would agree with putting semi synthetic in rather than fully synthetic.

because im an OTT anul retarded OCD oil changing muppet

I only do about 4k miles a year so I just change every six months or so , ive always done this with all my bikes , the buyers of my bikes love seeing all my bills for oil filters that I keep , usually clinches the sale

Fair enough. I thought I was missing something.
I do mine about every 8000 miles or so and I thought that was a bit of an overkill.

if you are using a first class fully synthetic oil I guess 8 k is alright , allow the the service schedule does say every year OR 7.5k .

I prefer to run cheaper oils and change more frequent

I use Silkolene Fully Synthetic, in my bikes for last 5 years. Change the drive oil same time.
Oil and Brakes are 2 things that I don't skimp on. (I use Brembo by the way).

changing oil filters too early can be as bad as not changing them at all. as filters get older the "big" gaps in the element get filled up leaving smaller gaps, so an older filter, half way through its service life, actually filters better than a new one. until a point where it is really blocked and then they normally have a bypass in them.  just my £0.02
