Title: Akrapovic silencer
Post by: grahamp2505 on June 08, 2015, 04:31:32 AM
I am looking to change the standard silencer on my 1400 GTR and am really taken with the Akrapovic one, I would be keen to hear from anyone who has one and understand how they have got on with it. I love the look of it but am a bit put off by the price.

Thanks G.

I made my own link pipe and fitted one to my 2008 GTR, it sounded and looked great, Akra quality is second to none in my book

Said the man with the most Carbon blinged machine in the country  :mfr_lol:

In fairness to Nightrider the pipe has only been listed as a fitment of recent most who wanted have enjoyed making their own fitting arrangements.

Even when I was a dealer the price made yer eyes water

Mind you the strength of Aussie Dollar against Euro it's going to be cheep as chips  :mfr_lol:

They are the best quality so go enjoy. To my knowledge no remap required

I finally purchased a Scorpion Serket in Carbon Fibre, very easy to fit, 1 hour from opening the box to riding off. The most fiddly piece was swapping the bump stop.

A big improvement in looks, sound and performance, very pleased with it.

I had a moment of madness back In May and bought the Akrapovic for mine, I went for it based on the sound from them in general and just to be different.
The sound with baffles in is pleasant and a big improvement plus track legal for those days of playing a bit more, baffles removed and it is just a different beast altogether and will confuse most people into looking for a sport bike.

I have no regrets in buying it and the workmanship is excellent,  the titanium link pipe weighs about the same as my mobile phone but the silencer is still relatively heavy  and I'm sure some are lighter.

They are the genuine Kawasaki ones, ridiculous price but have saved the panniers when dropped whilst stationary.

Hello

Just got mine

Quick questions :

1) The clamp that came with the exhaust is to be used to connect it to the engine header pipe?
I feel the diameter is realy small...

2) How to remove the dbkiller?

Sincerely

1, The clamp will be a tight fit at first but when it's tightened it will compress the pipe, if it was loose the bolt would stick out of the clamp and catch debris from the road eg bags etc..

2, The Db inserts/baffles are held on by small bolts, usually on the side towards the wheel or underneath.
If it's an Akropovic the bolt may be spot welded, make sure you have the right tool and undo counterclockwise, once out you should use something like a spring hook to pull them out without damaging the pipe.

Hope that helps.

Thanks

I am afraid of screwing things up so I won't remove the DB killer.

Seems a bit complicated...

Thanks

I'll post some pictures later

ok

so mine is on (2am french time :-) )

I had to cut the rubber gasket on the header to get it in, otherwise the holes for the screws were too far back.

But it's great, great noise, great looking.

Only thing that I don't understand is this ''movement'' between the silencer and the pipe... Check the video and tell me if something is wrong ?

There is a fibre gasket/seal ring which should be fitted over the end of the downpipe, its probably still be inside the exhaust end can that you have removed

You will nee to fit this gasket to eliminate exhaust gasses leaking, so it looks as if you will need to remove the akrapovic and refit it with this gasket

The gasket is silvery grey in colour and is easily missed when inside the pipe

Hello

I have removed the muffler

There is no gasket within the silencer (check photo attached) and obviously nothing inside the pipe.

When i push the pipe insde the silencer it goes into stop with the flange that you can see inside the silencer

THe manual says nothing about a gasket..

I am really confused here.

I am also confused, because my GTRs all had a fibre type sleeve gasket which fitted over the end of the down pipe and into the end can which provided a good seal between the pipe and end can when tightened up

Failing this you can always use some Holts Fire gum, which is very effective, clean and easy to use

Can anyone else advise ?

Tried to contact akra via facebook to understand if this fitting is normal. They tell me to contact the distributor which is... in italy.
This is starting to be ugly...
Can anybody who has this silencer check if there is a mouvement between the silencer and the pipe? (both akra parts). I don't have a problem between the pipe and the bike pipes (Kawa parts)
Cheers

I'm assuming the down pipe is part of the Akrapovic system .........check the diameter of the down pipe, is it smaller than the OEM one

Hello

What do you mean by Down Pipe?

is the the one with the 4 headers?

I have 3 parts :

Silencer = coming from AKRA
Pipe = coming from AKRA
Header pipe = coming from the engine (Kawa part)

The pipe and the silcencer (both Akra) are the one creating the issue here

No issue between the Pipe (Akra) and the Header (Kawa)

Maybe its meant to be like that as the 2 parts are only held together with springs to allow for movement and flex. I wouldn't have thought it would be like a dick in a top hat tho.... scuse the french!

The silencer is classed as a slip on which is held on by springs.

You have fitted it correctly and it will have a little movement which will reduce when it's hot, you will have had a tube of grease which you apply to allow that expansion without binding.

You don't need a gasket as that is eliminated by the springs.

If you want to remove the baffles just remove the small rubber plugs and you can access the small bolts through the holes. You can then remove them, I used a spring hook but if you're careful you can use a bit of cloth and pliers.

Hello.
I have thought about that but you really think that the mouvement in the video is ''litlle mouvement'' that can be erased by the heat expansion !?
Thanks for the feedback
Cheers

I bought a Scorpion Strap On (or is it slip on !!).

Anyway, no gasket on this, it just slips on and fits snug upto the flange on the inside. 2 Springs hold it in place and stop any rattle. I think it allows a little movement to allow it to  expand/shrink when it gets hot.

That's why it screams so load.

Badaboum, I think that you now have the answer. You can now enjoy the beautiful sound and looks of your Akrapovic pipe

The system that I used on my bike was slightly different but still relied on the spring attachments which were perfectly safe

I have attached a picture showing my set up

I measured the diameter

65mm for the Outer Dia of the pipe
65,4mm for the Inner DIa of the silencer

0,4mm that changes everything..

Akra comfired that the size should be 65mm.

I am now in the process of having it shipped back to the italian dealer..

Another couple of months of messess..

I'll keep you posted

Cheers
