Title: Northern France area to Brittany
Post by: nightrider on April 29, 2015, 08:28:05 AM
Have a trip booked to go to France in July ,over on the tunnel then stopping in St Omer ,so we can go see the ww2 rocket site museum have a ride to Dunkirk ,then 250m on the way to Brittany ,then stopping down near st Malo ,calling in to the submarine base at Loret, has any body any ideas of any thing else to see either on the way down or in. Brittany ,was going to follow the coast line so will be keeping off the main roads as much as possible ,going through lots of nice villages hopefully, then getting the ferry from St Malo to Portsmouth to come back ,it's going to be a nice steady pace no real rush ,

We went last September to see the V1 and V2 sites at the Blockhouse and La Coupole. It was very interesting, especially the Blockhouse, which seems to be the less visited of the two. You may also like to add in the local airfield at St Omer, as nearly all WW1 RFC Pilots passed through there on the way to the front and in the (largely original) hangars, there are many interesting items from that period. The hangars are occupied by a local flying club now, however a chat with one of the members who was there at the time gave us entry, freedom to wander and the offer of food and drink.

St Omer town centre was quite lively at night with bikes when we were there, providing some additional interest to pavement meals.

From memory we stayed at the Best Western Hotel, an easy walk into town and with onsite parking (albeit in the open air).

Just got back from a husiness trip to Caen.
The Pont de Normandie at Le Havre is impressive.
I've visited the museums in Caen and St Mere Eglise before and enjoyed them.
The riding is excellent in places but some of the area is quite flat.

I was in St. Omer friday night   me and a mate travelled at a nice steady pace from Norfolk to the tunnel, tea time crossing them short ride to Ibis budget in St. Omer, met 7 other bikers from Wales who'd been travelling up from the S.o.F, Saturday morning was wet and cold but it didn't spoil our day, we went to ww1&2 cemetries then on to the Lochnagar ww1 crater just a mile away (everyboby should see this, it's fabulous !), just down the road from the crater we found the ww1 Tea rooms which is owned and ran by brits where we had two lovely courses and a drink for £9 a head  then the sun came out for a lovely return ride to the tunnel for a late afternoon return.

Did 580 miles and enjoyed every one, bikes are just great  :biker3: :scooter: I love France.

Mont St. Michel is a nice place to waste a few hours. And if you're near St Malo, head to Cancale for lunch. You won't regret it

Roads to Dunkercke near coast are nice.  Cap griz nez you must have seen.... You can stop near causy villages and eat the best fruit de mer :-)
Dunkercke itself is not so great, visitted the tower once and a boattrip in harbour... Soso...  Dont go to the belgian border that way... Flat... Little to see unless you go to bruges area ;-)

Caen/le havre indeed and normandie arevery nice too.  Caen has a very nice botanic garden...
But maybe that is too far...
We made a biketrip there in that region during a long weekend and visited many war stuff...

Just under Caen is the most nice region to bike in : la suisse normande...  The name speaks for itself...
Here is a nice gps route : http://www.routeyou.com/nl-be/route/view/107078/motorroute/balade-touristique-la-suisse-normande.fr
Ps its the region from Calvados too.... A typical local drink you take between dishes :punk:... Good for the stomac they say (or just their good reason to have a good glass ;-D)

Me myself like to bike in northern france, like i did last sunday.  ( living near france border in flanders)
More than flanders;-/.   In many places you will see or hear even flemish language, our dialect based on dutch but wich you can not understand (bit like welsh to you i guess ;-D)

Good luck,  it cant go wrong, enjoy !

Was there on Saturday before going to the MotoGP at Le Mans on Sunday, luckily we managed to sneak the bike out of the parking lot without paying by going down the path to the right and through the gap  :mfr_lol:
