Title: Torquay, good roads & decent scenery.
Post by: Lonewolf on May 24, 2011, 08:40:43 PM
Firstly a confession, I'm here, not on the bike as I would have preferred but in the car. But nevertheless its an opportunity to have a look around and to share with you all some of the photos and sights. I'm in an area of Torquay called Maidencombe & the house which we are staying at is rented just for the week before we head back home.

The front of the house.

The rear of the house.

Plenty of scenic walks from the house if that's your thing. We like a bit of piece and quiet, somewhere to wind down when we are not at work so this is ideal. Quiet country lanes, old relics, horses, wildlife, etc, etc.

A crafty shot of the wife & Springers ;D

We had a trip into Cockington which is a small village with many thatched properties and small cafe's.

Had a spot of lunch in a quaint cafe.

I'm quite partial to a choccy shake. You can never order too many milk shakes. ;D

This was an interesting old house. The wooden struts are actually tree stumps from which the house is supported on. A bizarre design but it obviously works and has done for many, many years.

Walking around a park at Cockington I saw this old tree which reminded me of something from a horror film, very spooky and weird!

Tourist rides by horse and carriage, (just like Blackpool but without the stick of rock)

Cricket match, I dont know anything about cricket, its a strange sport.

The usual souvenir shops.

Opposite where we had a bite to eat is a botanical garden with a real life pianist. Very posh.  ::)

Running though a water feature in the grounds of the park is a floating bird table where some breed of bird was nesting.

More horse rides available if you have your American Express Card on you.

Had a decent BBQ on Sunday evening, I dont do cooking so I delagated that task to the Brother and Father in Law!

Monday we went to the Donkey sanctuary at Sidmouth. Dont laugh....we go every year. Its a brill place if you like animals and want to do your bit to prevent animal neglect. All of the donkeys have been relinquished into the care of the sanctuary, you can spend all day walking around, good for kids and adults alike.

Decent food in the restaurant too, although a tad expensive. £15.00+ for two baked spuds and two drinks. I suppose you cant complain, its free admission and free parking at the place.

Very scrummy though.  ;D

Nice pics there LW. However, cricket isn't a strange sport. I can quite easily go watch village cricket on a hot day, drink in hand. In fact, when I retire that's one of the things I'll be doing

Hit the ball, score runs, team with most points wins. Easy

Aye, only with the ball coming at you @ about 100 mph. Faster than you ride the bike  ;D

How dare you ;D

My bikes restricted to 69.9mph!

Looks like you had a great time there Mr Wolf ... walks and BBQ's ... I liked the photo of your choccy shake, but there appears to be something growing in your cup of tea !! As Mr Bondu says about the floating duck pond ... it probably WAS in a former MP's garden .. on that note I read last year that the guy who made those has gone out of business as a direct result of the scandal ... hand made by himself at £1,600 a go, making 15/20 a year, his orders fell to 2/3 so he folded up and went bust !
I bet the Springers loved it too. Now then , what's this about you not knowing much about cricket ??? Let me explain .......................

Rusty, we are still down here and will be till the end of the week. As for the tea, the waiter said it was herbal tea with a twist, I didnt know what he meant by that but it had a really strong smell to it.

Right, enough of the joviality  ::)

Yesterday, I took the dogs down to one of the local beaches, certainly not easy to find a dog friendly beach but we managed.
The ugly bugger on the photo is me... ;D

Brilliantly clear water.

Clear, almost deserted sands.

Back at the house it had warmed up so I was forced into the hot tub by Mrs Wolf, stunning views over the country for as far as the eye can see.

Warning.....the below photograph contains nudity of Mr & Mrs Wolf, not a pretty sight.  ;D
View at your peril!!

Once the body had receovered from the shock of having a bath during the day, I settled down with a good book (and all my chins as well looking at the piccy!), Mike Carter, Uneasy Rider - decent book for anyone who enjoys bike travel stories.

Today I went to an otter sanctuary being a nature lover as I am.

I dont think I've ever seen an otter close up and personal like, pretty big critters and some nasty looking gnashers.

Thats it for now, just settling down with a bacardi & coke, possibly more tomorrow.

:)

Hey I like the nail varnish on your toes ... maroon ??
This is myself, Lady Rusty and Molly just a little further down the path than you last June ... what a lovely place ... stopped for cheesy chips at the little bit of beach behind us there and watched some visitors do a bit of snorkelling.....

;D Rusty, Its a small world, but as Spike Milligan once said, "I wouldn't want to paint it!" Did you use the car park behind you where you got your grub from?

We came down that road and thought we'd never get back up again it was that steep with hairpin bends.

Its good to put a face to a name.

Well, I have to disagree. I knew his name but had never previously seen his face, so now I have put a face to a name.

If I saw someone frequently but did not know their name and then one day they told me their name, then I would be able to put a name to a face.

Mr Wolf .... No, we sat having our cheesy chips thanking God that we hadn't used that road ... it looked particularly bendy !! That part of the walk was the end / lets turn around and head for home bit. Lovely place I have to say .... perhaps after Ireland 2012 it may be Torquay 2013 ? Now that would be a decent ride for me and the northern contingent ..... anyone like the sound of that ?

Cornwall is nicer than Torquay in all honesty. But its still a possible venue, who knows.

I'm back at home now & back at work on Saturday for two night shifts, then four days off, so hopefully I'll get a chance to play out on the bike between Monday & Thursday.

Is that not a bit stereotypical? ;D Shepherds are too big to go in the panniers, you can just squeeze a collie in  ;D ;D

NB ... I have seen enough German Shepherds over the years to realise that a Collie is a VERY good choice !!!

Yes I remember .... there is a photo of your ex GSD somewhere here on the Forum ... I love 99% of dogs ( not keen on the little ratty ones ) and Molly is just great ... we love her to bits, as I know you did yours.
