Title: Experimental Photography....Please be kind!
Post by: Lonewolf on April 01, 2015, 10:55:11 PM
Feedback required please....

If anyone out there is into digital photography then they will recognise the first photo as being similar to HDR although it isn't HDR in the normal sense. I'm just curious, do you like it, do you hate it, are you still making your mind up? Trust me I wont be offended as I know HDR style photos are an acquired taste but they can be very impactive.

This one is the exact same image but a style of B & W.

If you can spare a few seconds please tell me what you think.  :gunsmilie:

Some bonus pic's...I went into Bradford today and took some random photos of buskers, which I like to do.

Colour or tinted, which do you think works best?

Just taken with my Nikon DSLR using RAW image format and then edited.

Having said that the top two were taken as JPEG's as I didn't shoot RAW then, the bottom two were shot in RAW and then exported to JPEG format after editing.

The pictures remind me of the mid-70's.  I didn't need a camera then to 'see' those kinds of colours.  Excellent work, though!

Love the way the grey/black shadow/fade effect makes the top of the bike around the screen bars and tank top appear to stand off the page which is enhanced by the sky appearing to converge at the top centre of the shot

Nice use of the low sun light angle and warmth of later afternoon light Steve  :punk:

I've got a few more. Ive printed some off and they look much better printed than they do on the screen. Problem is all PC screens tend to burn at different temperatures due to age etc and this can affect the overall image quality on screen.

Are you shooting Raw and editing your images in Lightroom?

I like the composition of the first pictures: rule of thirds, depth of field and leading lines are all very nice... have you considered using an ND filter and maybe blur out the clouds with a longer shutter speed to give your sky some motion? But that's a nice dramatic sky you have, did you use a grad filter on camera or in post, they can really balance the exposure and make it go boom. I like the black and white the best, maybe dodge and burn a little and add a nice post crop vignette. I really like a 1:1 crop on B+W pics.

Buskers make interesting subjects don't they, I might get in a bit closer for the portrait, or even shoot at a more side on angle with a long and fast lens wide open (maybe 200mm if you have it but shoot at least f2.8) to get a shallow depth of field to isolate the subject and blow out the background - makes for great environment/street portraits. It's a bit flat shot at against the background and in the middle of the frame. I like that you've not shot it at 5'10", always better to get down low if you can.

I like the blue-green colouring of the car picture, it's interesting. It actually draws the eye down but it's very heavy handed - especially with so much going on in the frame, it's quite busy and overwhelming. Wheres the focal point? Pull out a bit, follow the basic rules of composition and give your subject some room to breathe. The sky is very dramatic and will compliment the subject. A polariser might have been sufficient to make the sky pop and take out the reflections in the car, shame you couldn't ask the camper van to move, LOL.

Nice, job well done. It takes courage to put your pictures out there. Fear kills creativity. And in that spirit I offer you few of my own recent images for critique (originally exported for Facebook).

Stephen, yes I am shooting in RAW and using Adobe Lightroom, I've steered away from RAW for years but only recently been persuaded into giving it another go and like many things in life, I'm now wondering how I ever managed without it! The only images in this thread of mine however which are shot in RAW are the busker and the BMW. The others are older photos which ive just tweaked and experimented with. I have considered using a ND filter and I have seen some very impressive shots with examples such as you have described. The detail in the skies have been created within Lightroom, no filters on the lenses.

I shot the busker with a 300mm lens, I'm not sure what focal length I actually used but I didn't want to be too intrusive whilst taking it. He knew I was photographing him but didn't seem concerned and I recompensed him for his cooperation. As you say buskers, can and very often do make interesting subjects. I purposely included the amount of background I did to not swamp the photo with the main subject/s. The dog is as important in the image as the busker himself, the two of them together in my opinion tell a story. The props in the photo, the dog toys, the dog bed, the guitar case and even the dog treats against the far wall are all part of the image.

As for the car photos, they were very quick snaps taken while we had a break from riding. They were never meant to be artistic, I was just trying to demonstrate the versitility of photography. I enjoy my photo taking and I enjoy sharing my images with others as its good to get feedback, whether that be positive or not.

I'm just about to get some kip as ive just come off nights but when I'm refreshed I'll have a proper look at yours.

Good to hear, you can do so much more with a RAW file. If you imported with metadata you can click 'I' in Lightroom and see it all, I love Lightroom 5! One of the great things about a longer lens is that you can keep your distance and get them great candid shots, trouble is you look like paparazzi, LOL.

Look forward to hearing your thoughts.

Stephen, I am also using Lightroom 5, although I believe I did a free upgrade after I bought the software to Version 5.7. Either way it is terrific software which I have never used prior to about a month or so ago.

Photographs are very personal creations which are normally taken to please the photographer alone however if others enjoy them too then that is obviously a bonus. I like the photos you have posted, in particular the swan and the RAW image of Peterborough Cathedral. The JPEG image of the Cathedral looks flat in comparison to the RAW version but as you hopefully agree it depends on what you were setting out to achieve when you took the image and therefore neither one is necessarily better than the other. Hope that makes sense.

I don't get all serious over my photos, I take them for pleasure, I am however quite critical occasionally of my own photos and I will happily bin them if I don't feel they make the grade, but I don't lose any sleep over it.

Thanks for posting your photos and perhaps it will encourage others to exhibit theirs.

I'm new to photography so this is all new to me too. I'm coming to the end of my LR free trial from the creative cloud... I might subscribe when it runs out as it's not that expensive with PhotoShop as a personal bundle, or I might find a 'copy' from another 'source'.

I completely agree, the JPEG image of the Cathedral does look flat and I'd add boring. I was playing around the other day in LR and thought I'd try something with a different exposure of the Cathedral shot but it didn't really work in comparison to the RAW version.

There's no worse critic of my images than myself but it's good to get a fresh pair of eyes to spot things I didn't see. I love the book feature in LR... that's going to be sweet when I have enough images worthy of printing.

Went to Sunny Hunny (Hunstanton) yesterday to take some long exposures but it kinda went tits up... I lost my viewfinder cover, forgot to take my filter holder adaptor for my lens and left the bleeding ISO on 800 from the last time I used it. Schoolboy error I know, I should have checked it at the time (800 isn't bad but images can get a bit grainy the higher you go and in good light 100 is better - 800 is 3 full stops more sensitive to light).

Nevertheless, I took plenty of pictures with the view to trying a few things out later. I basically to 26x exposures (60mm at 1/30, f/32, ISO 800) and edited each one in Lightroom then opened and edited them as layers in Photoshop: auto-aligned, created them into a smart object and stacked them with a 'mean' algorithm (to get that blurry long exposure look) then reopened it in Lightroom to finish off (it was a 2GB+ file by this point). I know that's gobbledygook but thought I'd share in case any of you wanted to try it if you don't have filters.

So here are 3x composite images of the same thing with slightly different finishes: Colour, Dualtone (this ones for you Rusty as you said you like the sepia look) and my own fave the black + white, although looking at it again now I think I was a bit heavy with the vignette. What do you think? FYI they were shot on a Nikon D600 with a Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8.

What do you think? Do you like them? Which is your fave? If you don't like them I'd love to hear your feedback...

Stephen, very nice indeed. I did understand all your gobbledygook, it made perfect sense to me. I like the colour and the dualtone image but to me the B & W photo lacks punch and isn't by comparison to the others as impactive. But as I've said before photography is very personal, you like it and that is what counts. The vignette is strong and more apparent in the B & W image than in the others.

Did you not realise that you were getting some pretty fast shutter speeds??? The busker shot I did at the beginning of this thread was shot with ISO 1600, simply because I wanted a reasonable shutter speed and I believe I shot at F5.6 or maybe even F8 as I wanted all the image to be sharp.

I didn't see the overpowering nature of the vignette until I came back to it with fresh eyes... they do say to leave it a bit and then come back to it. Yeah, it's different strokes for different folks. I'm still finding my interests and my own style. I'm really liking landscapes at the minute because it means I can put my camera on a tripod, slow down and think about what I'm doing and what I want to get.

No, I didn't realise until I got home and saw it was ISO 800, I did wonder at the time why the shutter speed was so quick but it didn't occur to me to check the ISO at the time as I thought it was still on ISO 100 from before. I shoot manual to take control of it but totally forgot to check ALL my exposure settings, LOL. I normally sett it to 100 to get the least noise then increase it as I need to but I did have my uncle with me nattering while I was trying to think and compose, so I missed it. Like I said, I am a noob and I have learnt from it, that's the important thing.

I have to say I'm quite please with the results so far. I have an idea of a shot combining steel wool, a dog chain and a lighter for an amazing special effects shot (let the jokes commence)... I just want to find the perfect location?

My aim was long exposure but knowing I'd fluffed it I was determined to get something out of it and remembered seeing a tutorial on stacking to get long exposures. Interestingly stacking multiple exposures with higher ISOs actually reduces the overall noise in the final image.

Now that I really like. To be honest I've never tried anything like that but I presume it's quite an easy thing to achieve with a decent tripod, cable release etc? I must try to be more creative and experiment more.

I once saw one of our SOCO guys produce some photos within a derelict building, in total darkness, he focused on some debris with a torch and then illuminated the entire building level we were on with his torch using exposures of 30-40 seconds, the results were frighteningly good!  I got the impression he's done it before.  :mfr_lol:

Thanks, it's a bit softer in places then I'd like but it's all about trying new things for me at the moment. I drove around for ages trying to find somewhere but couldn't find anything inspiring so plumped for the flyover and done what I could in post. I've learnt that it's probably best to do it during the blue hour, not when it's completely dark - unless there's loads of interesting background like skyscrapers etc.

It was pretty easy: 30sec f/18.0, 100 ISO... (it's actually 2x images stacked in photoshop in maximum then I masked out everything but the light trails double bang for the buck... there wasn't as much traffic as I'd have liked).

Yeah, light painting; I've not tried that yet might be nice to do that on some sort of statue or monument??? I've got an idea for a special effects photo involving wire wire wool, a whisk and a dog chain. I wouldn't mind doing a Joel Tjintjelaar (https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=Joel+Tjintjelaar&es_sm=119&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ei=6HkqVYTaCcOP7Ab-04HAAg&ved=0CAcQ_AUoAQ&biw=1440&bih=732) type B+W architecture shot at some point.

Here's an attempt I did yesterday of some 'night photography'. I couldn't catch the 'blue' hour as I had to work till midnight so I've lost all the detail in the sky but I'm reasonably happy with it as a first attempt at this sort of thing. 18mm lens, F18 at 60 seconds.

Mr Stallebrass has motivated me to get shooting, so here are a few more attempts which I took this fine Saturday evening on the mean streets of Bradford.

This is an old mill complex which is supposed to be being converted into apartments but has stood in it's current state for years and probably will do for many more years to come. I've always wanted to have a go at photographing it and try to capture it in a unique style, maybe you'll like these, perhaps you wont. Pictures are very personal and I've taken them to my taste which I know wont suit everybody. Please, as before, feel free to comment, I promise ya all I wont be offended.  :gunsmilie:

(http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s139/Jaffa_Cake101/Fingers/DSC_7909_zps1wtmerqc.jpg) (http://s151.photobucket.com/user/Jaffa_Cake101/media/Fingers/DSC_7909_zps1wtmerqc.jpg.html)

This is for our black & white fans. The same building as above, but in a different wing. I was driving off when I just caught this view out of the corner of my eye and I loved the grittiness of it and the texture on the ground and walls.

(http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s139/Jaffa_Cake101/Fingers/DSC_7919_zpsxkwk1oov.jpg) (http://s151.photobucket.com/user/Jaffa_Cake101/media/Fingers/DSC_7919_zpsxkwk1oov.jpg.html)

This one I really like. Very atmospheric and I was thinking if only I could get a bike in there and position it on that expanse of broken concrete by the overgrown shrubs I believe that would make quite a striking image.

(http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s139/Jaffa_Cake101/Fingers/DSC_7930_zpsgmj5qb13.jpg) (http://s151.photobucket.com/user/Jaffa_Cake101/media/Fingers/DSC_7930_zpsgmj5qb13.jpg.html)

This next shot, I'm not so sure if it worked or not....maybe it's one of those love it or hate it attempts. Anyway thats the beauty of digital, if you done like it, just delete it! Personally I'm not too keen on it.

(http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s139/Jaffa_Cake101/Fingers/DSC_7936_zpshkivjopm.jpg) (http://s151.photobucket.com/user/Jaffa_Cake101/media/Fingers/DSC_7936_zpshkivjopm.jpg.html)

This final shot I do like. Simple but effective. A band stand in one of our local parks.

(http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s139/Jaffa_Cake101/Fingers/DSC_7958_zpsybofdnti.jpg) (http://s151.photobucket.com/user/Jaffa_Cake101/media/Fingers/DSC_7958_zpsybofdnti.jpg.html)

All the photos were taken on a hand held camera with two very steady hands.

And now for anyone who is still remotely interested, a totally different theme of photos.......

I had half an hour at Keighley & Worth Valley Railway at Howarth earlier today and sought permission to go into the workshops to take some photos.

Here are some of the results, I've tried to mix a blend of gritty, impactive images with some vibrant 'colour' images.

A couple of additional photos I took this morning down by The Leeds & Liverpool Canal at Greengates.

Simple but effective I think. I like the richness & saturation of the photos as it makes the bike really stand out from the background.

What I'd like to do is find an owner of a GTR that would like some photos taking, do you know anyone?

Here's a couple of photos which I took this evening up on Ilkley Moor by the Cow & Calf Rocks. (That won't mean a lot to many, but it's a famous landmark in Yorkshire).

And another which I prefer to the first one.

Both were taken with a massive 8 minute exposure at F22 using a 10 stop ND filter. (and a tripod of course!) :whistling:
