Hi guys, has anyone got a Rostra cruise control fitted to their bike? I've wired one in but can't get the bloody thing to work. All the diagnostic tests pass, so I suspect the unit may be faulty, or the dip switches are set wrong. I've checked out the murphs kits website for info, and have tried the dip switches on their recommended settings with no joy so far
Help! Lol
get yourself onto the concours sites in usa ( COG owners) there are a few threads on it, ive got the audiovox ss100 so cant help
Virginia jim might be able to direct you on there
if you ask there are a few who will help, another member on Here BDF , he is a tech genius and does a lot of how to's , im sure he has been involved with the rostra

Cheers for the ideas viper. I've already looked at the videos but everything checks out ok. I think going over to the cog forum might help, thanks. I have a feeling that I have a duff unit to be honest.

were you told how to set the dip switches?
Yeah I got that from the literature on the murphs kits website, and just double checked the settings on the YouTube link you sent, and it all looks the same unfortunately. That's where I thought the problem would lie. I've also tried a few other settings, but the cruise control just won't engage. I can only think its faulty???
have you got your rear brake light feed going through a relay before it goes to the cruise
on murphs instructions there is an email link to Brian Felice, that's member BDF who is on here. he may give you some info on testing to see if the unit is faulty before you send back
Hi Viper, yeah the brake light and the cruise control set light are both wired through relays. All the diagnostic tests from the Rostra website pass, ie brake switch feed, speed sensor output, control switch returns from the on, off, set, and coast control switches etc. The neutral safety switch return goes negative when the clutch is pulled too. The bugger should work! Grrr. Thanks for your input though, if you think of anything else let me know! The seller is just looking into it for me too, I just hope he comes up with something as sending it back to America will be a pain. The perils of eBay I guess!
I'll give Brian a try too, thanks
Finally got it working with the help of Brian and the guys over the pond. There was a 0.01volt difference between the battery neg and neg going into the Rostra.
The cause of the problem was a factory fitted splice in the neg line!
Not had any real play time on it yet for a proper assessment, but it seems functional although a little agricultural compared to the one in my car. It may need a little fine tuning I guess, but it does a good job at higher speeds around 70mph. As long as I can get it working well at 50 for road works and higher for motorway speeds I'll be happy. I guess you get what you pay for :mfr_lol:
Im so glad I bought the MC Cruise Control... It was far easier to fit that.
After watching those vidoes I don't think I would have attempted to fit the Rostra
Its not that bad to fit really Debs, it just takes a while to manufacture brackets and the like. There are a couple of options where to put the controller, but its certainly not a plug and play job. I think yours will be a lot more refined though in its operation and the way it holds its speed. I've not done much testing yet, but will report back on my findings.
To be honest Cruise Control on a bike isn't on my list of priorities, I just thought I'd fit it as it was cheap enough, so I have the option to give the right hand a break when on long tours. I don't think I'd have shelled out a grand to get CC, at that price I'd have been tempted to chop the bike in PX for the K1600 .... shhh did I really say that
As you said in your thread for the CC, it would be a boring place if we all chose to fit the same thing, so fair play to ya on your choice of install. I'm sure its a big help to you on all the long haul trips you do in Europe.
By the way, what sort of speed range does yours start to work from, does it hold its speed well, and is it silky smooth like a car CC?
Well after a bit more testing I'm actually quite impressed with it. There's a bit of a knack to using it but overall it isn't bad. Firstly, you really need to be in top gear for a smooth ride. In lower gears it tends to surge a little due to the torque at the back wheel I guess - the CC is constantly trying to re-correct itself. In top, this doesn't happen. secondly, for the smooth transition of the CC taking over, you need to keep your throttle steady, engage the CC, and then keep hold of the throttle for a second or two until the CC controller takes up the slack and sets itself. Once I sussed these two quirks out, the CC was smooth and steady when tested at 50 and 70 mph. It seems to hold the speed well too, within 2 mph I guess.
I use mine from 30+ and there is no surging. When I went to France last week I set it on 65mph and plodded along nicely. Had my feet up on my highway pegs and admired the view... :mfr_lol:
Haha nice one Debs, admiring the scenery hey
Of your feet?
