i took the gtr out today,to have 2 or 3 cage drivers pull out in front of me,although we as you all no have our headlights on all the time, the 2nd one tested the ABS,it does work,so i've ordered a light weight rev'it cyclone neon yellow waterproof over jacket.atleast they will see me

Is that code for "Sidewinder Missile System" ?
If so ........................Big Al / Debs / and I will help fit it .....................after the electronic cruise control the three of us are hungry for our next tech challenge
Less technical it may be, but a bag of poo thrown through an open window may be just as satisfying.
The old hi viz debate, does it work, does it not work? I do like to wear mine when I'm out, peace of mind I guess just in case. Hopefully if the worst ever happened at least I can say I did everything I could to ensure I was seen.
I'm not sure how much you've just paid for your vest but I tend to buy mine from builders merchants these days. Although mines not an over jacket its just a bib thing I only pay £4.99 for them. The high viz vest I bought a couple of years ago and paid £45 for, from Get Geared in Leeds for my trip to Scotland self destructed on the way home. Popped into a local builders merchants who sorted me out for £5. Cant go wrong at that.
When they get too grubby to wash and come clean I just bin them and get another.

Which is exactlly what i do. If nothing else the insurance company cant say i could not be seen, and i am also a cheapskate.

As Steve says the debate surrounding 'to Hi Vis or not to Hi Vis' has been well covered on many bike forums for years, and the opinion as to whether it works or not will, I suspect, continue for some time yet.
Tapps my View, for what its worth is....if it makes you feel safer and more visible to other road users then wear it mate
Steve is right about the inflated prices charged by some outlets and a 'construction' variety is just as visible and a whole lot cheaper
You can always check out the stock on here

I wouldn't go for anything that looks like Police apparel though in today's current climate of unrest among certain individuals.
it's a plain yellow one.
Mine is pink

She was, i have seen it.

Unfortunately vehicles will always pullout in front of you no matter what you wear or ride like.
My thinking is, if you think everyone will pull out, your ready if they do.
If they can't see lights, they can't see !!
Don't speed or over overtake near junctions.
Car drivers generally can't judge speed and are in a world of their own.
If wearing hi vis helps, then great....i only wear my waterproof hi vis if I'm cold, its wet or at night.
There's quite a bit of sense in what you said Ant.
I wear a pink vest over my jacket and have hi viz on my bike. When I was on my IAM I was told that even though you can see my bike coming from a mile away, drivers can get distracted by watching me and not the road. We all know what drivers do when there's a fender bender on the motorway, on the opposite side to them..
I won't change what I am doing, just hope it makes that one extra idiot take notice..
:agree:
I'm going to add my 2p..... firstly this is the SMIDSY.... Sorry Mate, I Didn't See You.
If they are not looking, you can wear whatever you like, including nothing - and they won't see you. ride in the country much around autumn time? - Hi Vis will make you even more invisible with a back drop of yellow leaf trees. :-)
Active driving is what you need to do - if you see a car that you don't think has seen you - can you see the drivers face? when you do - move the bike 1 foot to the left or right and you will be more successful, if not - slow down.
When a light (or two on the gtr) is seen by a car, the bike can change approximate distance very rapidly... 100m? maybe? but the perceptible light or brightness of the lights won't change and will look like it is not moving or static and people pull out.... By moving either side (not erratically), you will change the perception and angle at which the driver is seeing you - Human eyesight is designed to pick up movement and will highlight to the "blind tin can driver" that something is moving..... it may not stop them pulling out, but your playing with the driver peripheral vision... also - sound your horn - thats what it is there for..... if you can't do any of those things - your going too fast :-( <--- usually me.
Thats the theory anyway - I hate health and safety grrrrr....
Neil
As ant says if they don't look for bikes you can wear nowt.
The woman hairdresser in her convertible who hit me head on and pushed my front wheel through the rad into the tank and pushed me and the bike down the road said exactly that she didn't see me in all my hiviz. And then complained to the police that I swore at her :mfr_lol:
I always ride with the notion that everyone is out to kill me, especially those that know me.

To be honest when I was in the ambulance alone with him being breathalysed :mfr_lol:
He looked round to see who was about and said what does she expect flowers :mfr_lol:
Possibly a fellow biker then eh?
It makes you laugh, you get rammed head on and you swear.....heaven forbid!
She should be thankful you only swore at her.. I would have punched her...

I probably would have debs but I was lying face down with the remains of a 1250 bandit on top of my leg it was funny how my helmet was all grazed up the chin gaurd and visor no damage to the rear. :mfr_lol:
since haveing the GTR over the bandit the number of cars not seeing me seems to have increased. i put this down to the twin lamps that look like a distant car. and the quieter exhaust. it not standard but very quiet compared to the full race akrapovic system on the bandit.
however :agree: with above.
i do not buy in to the SMIDSY excuse. it's our responsibility not to be pulled out on. and if we are, to make sure we are not on a collision course.
i do buy in to the loud can save lives approach.
I have used these from Dickies. They are cheap and chearful, but have a zip up front so don't blow open like the Velcro ones. also have some handy little pockets to put car park barrier cards in, so easier to get to rather than putting in inside pockets.
PS - as you say, dont matter what you wearing if drivers aren't looking. ................
I tend to wear mine mainly at night or when its dark and rainy.

I have the twozero gilet type.
It has zips on the sides to exspand to cover a rucksack if required not sure many on here will need it. :mfr_lol:
Very good quality a bit pricey but I've hade mine 5 years so it pays for itself.
Also keep your eyes peeled for them free with a mag subscription I did :punk:

I wonder how that works with the idiots with the windows up, listening to loud music, and texting.....? You do realize that the noise comes out the rear and goes backwards from whence you came, right? Now if the can was pointing forwards, I could understand that philosophy.

Window up and listening to loud music is no different to helmet music Jim,,,,Loud exhaust is useful in second gear going past the dick that just didn't see you,,,,,shits the life out them ! :mfr_lol:
As they turn the steering wheel towards you or someone else...I've got no use for excessively loud pipes. I just keep an eye on them and expect them to try to hurt/kill me. It's worked so far and I haven't damaged my hearing. I have an Area P but I don't think it's excessively loud. My idea of loud pipes are the HDs around here (US) with no muffling at all. If I'm driving with the windows up, music on excessively loud, and not texting, I really don't hear them until they pass me. I could still pull out and wipe them out if I didn't look in the mirrors so their loud pipes would be for naught.
